    The reason why Todoroki is considered really strong cause his power balances out the consequences of his quirk. If he uses his ice ability too much he gives himself frostbite but he can counter that by warming himself up. And if he uses his fire too much he overheats and burns himself which he can counteract with his ice side. Making him almost unstoppable

      On top of that you have to consider the fact that Endeavor became the number 2 hero despite the weaknesses of that fire. Todoroki can potentially have that fire with no weaknesses as well as his ice which seems to be just as potentially powerful. He has such insane potential to completely outstrip his father.

      Spoiler for the rest of the tournament
      The best thing Horikoshi did with this tournament is that there was no real winner. Deku could have won if he only focused on winning rather than helping Todoroki. Then Bakugou only wins because Todoroki didnt go all out. Every fan of the show before the tournament always had those three as the definite strongest in the class. By making none look like the absolute best it keeps giving the characters more room to grow as the story progresses and in a way tells the fans it doesnt matter in the long run who the strongest is.

    • @giantWario
      @giantWario 2 года назад +1

      @@Vichingo23 I hate when people say that. Bakugo did not win only because Todoroki didn't go all out, Bakugo had already won anyway. Explosions are ridiculously good at putting out fires you know, even if Todoroki had fully mastered both of his sides (which he definitely did not do at that point) it would still have made sense for him to use only his ice side against Bakugo. If ice doesn't work against explosions, fire most definitely won't do the trick. Especially in that situation where Bakugo had already unleashed his ultimate move anyway, there's no amount of fire that could have stopped Bakugo at that point, Todoroki would have been much better off trying an ice shield again.

    This episode is called Shoto Todoroki Origin because THIS episode, THIS fight, and THIS argument with Deku is his starting line to being a real hero and not what his father wants him to be. Its Todoroki's origin story. This is the moment Shoto starts to put his past behind him and begin being who he truly wants, and yes Deku lost this fight, thats not gonna change, he was knocked out of the ring and unconscious while Todoroki put a ice shell around himself to protect him from the blow back. Thats not what matters, what matters is what All Might said even if you cut it out;
    "Young Midioriya, dont tell me youre trying to SAVE Todoroki."
    Thats exactly what happened, Deku wasnt trying to win the fight, well he was but not as much as he shouldve been, he was trying to help his classmate realize a truth that he desperately needed to hear. He was trying to save Todoroki from himself.
    So in a way while he might of lost his chace to win the tournament he won the philosophical battle that the two were having.
    Deku is someone who had no expectations for him most of his life because he was quirkless until All Might gave him the power to stand among all the other hero candidates and now has the expectations of his family, friends, and mentor on his shoulders while at the same time not able to use all of his power because he is currently physically unable too.
    Todoroki is someone who has had EVERY expectation laid down on his shoulders from day 1, he was the succesful offspring to Endeavor's selective breeding and has a power that is one of the strongest to currently exist in the show, but Todoroki refuses to give it his all because of a principle of rejecting the man who would be his mentor. This infuriates Deku in the first half of the fight, hence his yelling at Todoroki. Everyone else in the tournament is giving it their all to be there and win, and so it rightly pisses Deku off that Todoroki is trying to in a sense half-ass this by using half his strength to win. Todoroki comes to realize that Deku is right after Deku hits him a bit and yells at him some more that its enough to jog some of his memories about All Might stating that quirks are genetic but that its still up to the individual to decide how to use them and his mother reinforced the statement. If you go back and look closely a when Todoroki and Deku are smiling at each other after the flames start, Todoroki is actually crying. He has tears in his left eye.

    Something to keep in mind with the Todoroki family drama is to pay attention to the family dynamics. The Todoroki family members each embody different archetypical roles within a dysfunctional family, with different ways of handling trauma and how they respond to it. For example, Shoto’s emotional coldness and standoffishness is a known side effect of long term exposure to domestic violence in dysfunctional families. Even intrusive thoughts that he himself calls out as “why am I thinking about this all of a sudden?”, a classic PTSD sign, as are memory problems in general which he alludes to this very episode.
    It’s those dynamics that make it one of the more accurate depictions of a dysfunctional family I’ve ever seen.

    I loved your insight on Endeavor. There’s a lot more going on in the Todoroki family than shown here as this is only Shouto’s side of the story. While Endeavor is pretty much the “villain” in Shouto’s eyes here, expect some nuance and grey area down the line.
    Also Deku essentially gave up his shot at winning because helping Todoroki ended up being more important to him.

    I know you probably know already but when endeavor says "i put her in a hospital to keep you safe" he put her in a MENTAL hospital. Ive seen so many reactors default to assuming he beat the shit out of her or something. Ultimately (even though he was the primary cause of the whole ordeal) i think he made a good decision on doing so. It helps get her away from him and helps heal all the emotional scars in the long run.
    Endeavor and the entire todoroki family are 100% the most complex, interesting, and entertaining story of all of mha. So much so that it is still having impacts in the story today.

    • @theanafront3746
      @theanafront3746 3 года назад +3

      I think that was intentional, though. Chances are very good that he absolutely DID beat the shit out of her before he put her there.
      If anything, the implication is way worse: If she went to a hospital for her injuries, everyone would know about his monstrous behavior. But by putting her in the _mental ward,_ she can't ruin his pristine reputation of being the Number Two Hero (because no one would believe her).

    • @giantWario
      @giantWario 2 года назад +2

      @@theanafront3746 It might have been intentional by the translator but the original Japanese clearly states he sent her to a mental hospital from the start. Beating her up would have been pointless and Endeavor is always nothing but practical, even when he's abusive. And I'm not saying this because of his redemption later on here, I'm saying that even at his worst, Endeavor is not the kind of guy who'd beat up someone in anger, no matter if it's his wife or even some random villain. No Endeavor would beat up someone if he thinks he would gain something from doing it.

  • @DavidRomigJr
    @DavidRomigJr 3 года назад +21

    An interesting aspect between Todoroki and his mother, first he doesn’t blame his mom for the injury. She had a mental break down and saw Todoroki as his dad who had abused her. Endeavor may be a great hero, but he’s a pretty s**tty husband and dad. (And by the way, the hospital he put her in was a mental hospital because of what she did, he didn’t beat her up for it though I understand why people jump to that conclusion.) But he said the only memories he recalled of her were of her crying and the moment of the injury. As his resentment of his dad festered, he focused in on only negative memories. But as the fight progressed and Midoriya did that thing he does when he sees someone suffering, he began remembering a ton of positive memories. The best line: “I didn’t realize just how much I’d forgotten.” I also noticed, he can’t remember his mother’s eyes, except for her frightened and freaked out expression that day.

    Ah yes, my favourite character, Todoroki... Enji (Endeavor)
    He's an abusive, awful, obsessive person by this point in the story, but his writing is some of the best in the series. I think a lot of people misunderstand the nature of abuse when it comes to this character.
    And later on we do see the reason/event that made Endeavor like this, the same event that worsened Shouto's mom's trauma - a lot of which was absolutely worsened by Endeavor.
    I think the arc Todoroki (Shouto, the son) goes on, understanding that he can exist not in spite of Endeavor, but as himself, releasing himself from Endeavor's control, is truly amazing. I think Endeavor doesn't deserve forgiveness from the family he hurt. I think the story knows that. And I think that's what makes the writing so nuanced.

    One thing worth mentioning is that the English dub makes subtle but significant changes to Endeavor's language, making him more overtly villainous.

    She said that Shoto’s left side reminded her of Endeavor and in the flashback you can see she can only see Shoto’s left side because of the door so thats why she was scared and instinctively threw hot water at him but at the end of the day it’s the parents’ fault. Not Endeavor, not the mother but both of them.

    his mom threw that water on him because she is unstable.. and part of the reason she's become so desperate and even scary is what she had to tolerate his father, who obviously abused her physically and emotionally. Domestic violence can really destroy a person, so I disagree with you there. Yes, the mother did throw that water on todoroki, and she is responsible for it, but his father definitely did have something to do with this as well... but this is just me.

      I think we're pretty much in agreement. It's just that the way I think, I think it's not the total truth to say Endeavor made her throw water on Todoroki. He was abusive, a terrible father, the list goes on, but ultimately she did that, as hard as that is to stomach.

      There's no indication he ever physically abused her (he did however physically abuse Shouto through his "training") , and later in the manga we get a deeper look at what actually transpired. Both Endeavor and his wife were traumatised by an event and fully unequipped to handle it in a healthy way.
      I'm saying this because there doesn't need to be physical abuse for there to be abuse. He was emotionally abusive, monstrously controlling, and allowing his (recent, horrific) trauma to pass onto his children through his abuse of them.

      @@mrrd4444 You bring up a good point. The anime seems to add in what sounds like Endeavor hitting Rei, but there isn’t hard confirmation. I haven’t read the manga (just some spoilers), so for all I know, it could just be an add-on for the show.
      It’s a very messy situation. Endeavor seems to be the root cause; but there are other factors at play. Just like real life, the answers aren’t so easily black and white.

    At least until this point there were really no "I want whats best for my kids, what I never had"

    he is just so obsessed with beating All Might that doesnt even care how, so the wife and kids are just instruments

      Also I dont think you got the thing about his mom.
      Endeavor greatest weakness is that he can sometimes overheat and hurt himself and the mom has Ice powers, so he didnt pick her just because Ice is strong and would make a strong kid, he chose her cause with ice and fire he could cool down and vice versa, like now when todoroki was too cold and the fire warm him up again, so he has no weakness

He was just showing it in a different way. The Deku that cries constantly because he's easily moved by other peoples kindness, the Deku that stands up for his friends, the Deku that wants to be a hero above all else, the Deku that can't stand someone half assing a fight, the Deku that rushed in to save someone in danger even if it was someone who hurt him. I'm so glad you're already picking up on the complexity (and excellently created character) that is Endeavor/Enji Todoroki. This is the first we're meeting him and he's a pretty repugnant entity at this stage, but I am not overselling it when I say he's my favourite character in the whole series. In time we'll see how complicated and nuanced his story (and really the whole Todoroki family dynamic) is. I notice you mentioned ATLA and, honestly, Enji was essentially presented as yet another Fire Lord Ozai Bad Dad (hell his name even pretty much means Fire Lord/Master), but Horikoshi really takes him to dazzling heights--and humanizes him at the same time.
    This moment is so huge for Shouto in particular. This fight with Deku finally wakes him up to the idea that he can be more than a product of his circumstances. That he really can chart his own course in life, not as a victim of his parents--and you're right, what Rei (his mother) did to him was on her, regardless of what Enji did to her--but as the kind of hero that HE wants to be.
    These dysfunctional hero-Kardashians are a standout element in the MHA universe. Probably the thing that keeps my interest the most.

    What I love about this episode in particular, is because Izuku understands that being a hero is more than winning a match, but saving people. Not only saving them from danger, but help them see the light that is in themselves. That is what All Might is for the people in the world, he is the light. Izuku might've lost the match, but have deeply ignited Shoto's passion for being a hero. Put totally intended.
    Still totally refreshing that there are so many adults in this shonen show that you can actively root for and like for being, responsible, caring and competent people.

    You see, when she threw the water on him, she immediately tried to fix it by using her power. But anyone who has basic knowledge on burns knows that applying anything Ice cold will only make it worse, because the cold also burns. And considering how he should have more resistance to heat, it was probably her trying to help that caused the most damage.
