To have that many heavy hitters in one room at that time...damn.

Every time I start thinking I'm a pretty darned good musician and get to feeling a little full of myself, I watch these guys and realize I'm not even allowed in the room... magical stuff...

I met Louis Armstrong once in 1965. He was very sweet and friendly. What a talent.

Watching Tommy Dorsey bust up when Benny stomps his foot out of time is worth watching over and over. This was a pinnacle of American music in a 4 minute clip.

At one time, when he was still alive, I proposed playing some of his music to a fellow communicator who had a jazz program at a local radio station.
The other guy was not receptive to the idea - and was more than a littlr bigoted. He claimed Goodman stole jazz from Black musicians!
Years later, after Benny had died, I asked the radio guy if he remembered saying what you've just read. He claimed - perhaps out of shame - he had never said that.

History, if you don't learn it you are bound to repeat it. Perhaps you should read a book...any book. Expand your horizons, you're lacking.

It takes an incredible amount of talent and timing to be able to do things out of time. Anyone who listens to Spike Jones would know what I mean.

Seeing Lionel Hampton in 1978 rocked my world. He was fronting a big band with a bunch of famous sidemen, including Arnett Cobb, Wild Bill Davidson, and Curtis Fuller. After three numbers the entire audience was standing on their chairs. He had a drum set with blinking Christmas lights and threw his sticks high into the air while he played. Then he’d get up and start dancing on stage, his sweat flying off him into the crowd. I felt like I was being lifted off the ground by the sheer power and swagger of that band.

Supposedly true story about Benny Goodman:
Benny has the orchestra practicing in a rented rehearsal hall. It’s winter, the heat is not turned on, and orchestra members are freezing. Finally, during a pause, one of the boys screws up his nerve and says, “Hey Benny, it’s freezing in here!”
Benny says, “You’re right. I’ll be back in a minute.”
“Great,” says someone. “He’s gone to get the heat turned on.”
Benny returns, wearing a heavy sweater and says, “Take it from the top.@

Esta interpretación es una joyita para los que amamos el JAZZ desde la infancia , allá por finales de los años 60 . Aunque solo he visto actuar en persona a Lionel Hampton de los que salen en la película. SWING FOREVER

Amazing movie with amazing stars! Sadly, except for this and other films from Hollywood's Golden Era - like 'Ball of Fire' with Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck (1941) - and these RUclips clips, this great music is dead.
