Been in love with the Blood Angels since 2010 and I just love the regal esthetic of there armor and how it really has nothing to do with vanity they just use it to fend off the black rage it's beautiful really and great work as always
I'm planning to start working on a Blood Angels army, I assumed the contrast paint would be splotchy and expected to go over the brighter areas with a Mephiston Red glaze. I might still do that, but it looks like this paint is behaving itself.
It’s all about how you use the Contrast paints. If you just sling them at the model then you’re more likely to get splotches, if you’re careful with it and treat it like any other paint you’ll get great results. I do like a glaze over large flat areas just to tie everything back together again.
What Josh said, plus experiment with a few minis that you don't mind either looking a bit blotchy, or are prepared to put in the time to either strip or glaze. The Recruit starter set is a good example... by the time you've worked through the five assault intercessors, you'll get close to cracking it, then hopefully the Lieutenant is your Contrast Paint Stage One Graduation Exam project. Then, you can try to do the same to the Necrons in the box and realise just how much further you have to go.
would it not be easier to paint the banner/left arm in sub-assembly format? I'm going to keep watching and see if you manage to paint the entire figure, maybe you have a trick up your sleeve, or if you skip over what's behind the banner. Me being obsessive and needing perfection i couldn't let something go unpainted.
Sure if you like to paint in sub assembles. I personally don't like painting in sub assemblies and I'm pretty good at getting in all the nooks and crannies
Hey, awesome work! This is so helpful. Quick question on specifically painting Blood Angels with the contrast paint scheme: I noticed you are using almost exclusively the Grey Seer paint spray as your primer/undercoat for Blood Angels. I have Wraithbone and Corax White over here. Especially Corax White paint spray is something I would want to try out if that works well on my Blood Angels while using the same contrast paint scheme as you. Before ruining and wasting paint, do you have any advice and/or experiences with the combination Corax White paint spray + contrast paint on Blood Angels?
Corax White and Blood Angels Red will give you a similarly slightly cold result, that’ll be a tad brighter overall. If you’ve something like a spare sculpted base or even just a couple of good sized bits of sprue leftover, I’d recommend testing it out first fo see what you think before committing to it on a model, especially with Corax White being a bit temperamental at times!
Thanks! I tend to paint everything fully assembled as it’s what I’m used to. I have painted big things like the Silent King and Teclis in sub-assemblies but they’re not normally my thing.
How do you get contrast paints to go on so smoothly? They tend to dry so quickly that I often get streaks-especially Blood Angels Red on armor panel surfaces.
For me it’s about getting the right about of paint on the brush and doing a smallish area at a time. You want enough paint on there that the brush is obviously full, but not so much that there’s a drip forming at the end. If you’re still finding that the paint isn’t quite doing what you want, a 1:1 mix with Contrast medium will help the paint to flow even more whilst maintaining the Contrast properties of the paint.
Just picked up my first terminator models off ebay, will be using this guide to get em battle ready and maybe even brave the edge highlights this time!?🤨
Well that’s a bit exciting! If you’re trying edge highlights for the first time, perhaps just do them on the most prominent and ‘important’ edges that’ll grab focus - so stuff on the front of the model. That way you can practice the technique without having to do it all over.
How many layers of blood angels red to put on I've tried this method and i keep messing up and it looks splotchy I feel like I'm doing something wrong I love you tutorials a lot though keep up the good work!
Most of the time It's just the one layer of Blood Angels Red. There is a knack to getting it smooth and it comes down to Brush Size, Brush Control and How much paint you have on your brush. You don't want so much paint that a drip is forming on the bristles but you don't want to little that it looks dry. You want it wet but not overloaded. The key to getting it on the model is to glide across the surface of the model rather than vigorous strokes. It's hard to unlearn the regular way of painting with base and layer paints as it doesn't matter there but with contrast you want to be gentle. Effectively you need to be methodical and lightly glide across that surface.
Another great video! Something oddly satisfying about this method, almost like colouring in aha. I've tried using blood angels red a few times on my models, I go panel by panel, each in the same direction. I also follow your tip about not having too much on the brush. Yet for some reason I still get a streaky type red, I can't seem to get that super vibrant and clean red you get when you do it. Any tips? (I prime in wraithbone btw, should I be using grey seer?)
You should still be getting a nice vibrant red over Wraithbone doing that. The only thing I can think off the top of my head is maybe that the paints might need shaking more? Contrast paints can require far more shaking than you think at times.
@@Warhipster The red is pretty bright, I just can't get that really smooth coat that you get, it almost looks like you're using a base paint. Mine looks streaky and nowhere near as crisp as yours. I'll try putting in a ball bearing and giving a good shake!
Love your tutorials just wondering could you do more Dark Angel stuff like the Raven Wing and the different types of troops in Dark Angel colours like the Primaris lieutenants, captains and Ancient. I ask because I my self am making a dark Angel army and your tutorial really help me.
I did Ahriman a while back and you can find him here: ruclips.net/video/0aDcxat5vFo/видео.html I think I’ll look at doing things like Rubricae and Scarab Occult when the next Thousand Sons book drops, as I’ll probably do a video on the Combat Patrol if they get one.
Sorry for the stupid question, but I'm new to mini painting so when you paint do thin all of your paint? Or only when you mention to thin it for a certain segment or area?
That’s not a stupid question at all! For these videos, unless otherwise mentioned I always use the paint as it is from the pot. Contrast paints are formulated a little differently to regular paints so only really need thinning if you want to change the properties of the paint.
It gives a similar result but it’s not quite the same - the Contrast paints have a different and the different sizes of pigment in the paints help with adding depths.
It’s a piece called ‘The Long Walk’ by Jamie Norwood. I downloaded it from a website called www.epidemicsound.com which is where I get all my music from 🙂
See I hate that I love warhammer I can't stick to an army lol to many cool looks and too much I want to do at one point I had like 6 diffrent army's but now down to just 2 and then a knight army which i don't use other than using the top half as terrain
One of the advantages to doing these videos is a get to paint a wide variety of stuff and not get bored on one thing. Though I don’t think I could ever get bored of painting Blood Angels!
I've decided to play Blood Angels, and your paint guides are a big part of what inspired me to do so! Thanks and keep up the great work!
That’s great to hear, I always love to know that my videos have actually helped people!

I’m glad you like him!
I love how 2nd Edition that banner looks, absolutely captured the classic 40k feeling!
Thank you, I’m glad you like it! It’s such a striking banner and it’s great to see it in such bold colours.
Superb painting guide 👍
Thank you!
I just got them recently can’t wait to paint them after finals!!!
Amazing! Good luck with your finals and enjoy painting when you get back to it.

With 10th edition coming out soon are you going to be creating a table top ready paint tutorial for them ?
