  • While looking through a game from my collection, I came across this package that aired during the CBS halftime show in December 1980. I figured even though it's not Vikings related (besides the Kramer mention), it's NFL history which is important and it's worth sharing with the rest of you.

I saw a book of his life and times at Barnes and Noble bookstore. He was a real party animal. He passed away on the first day of December of 1986, three weeks before his sixtieth birthday. Also he went to same high school with Hall of Fame member Doak Walker and Coaching legend Tom Landry and his widow Alicia.

The greatest player in Lions history other than Barry Sanders. The Lions have won 1 playoff game in 1991 against Dallas since winning the 1957 NFL Championship Game and trading Bobby Layne to Pittsburgh. Matt Millen was a very good linebacker but maybe the worst GM in NFL history. It takes alot more than drafting wide receivers to build a good football team

Bobby Lane won more games drunk than the entire Lions qbs since. Cheers rip

yeah, I used to see old NFL films stories about Bobby Layne, teammates said they could smell liquor on his breath, & not sure if he had been to bed the night before😂

@Sheisthedevilyouknowwho-ft9we Bob St Claire of the San Francisco 49ers mentioned those parties in the visitors locker room at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco, and when the 49ers visited Detroit. Same thing in the Lions locker room. Entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 1967 in his first year of eligibility. He later came back to Canton, Ohio to be a presenter for his old teammate Doak Walker in 1986. Sadly, Bobby Layne passed away on December 1st, 1986 three weeks before his 60th birthday. His number 22 was retired by the Detroit Lions and the University of Texas. He and Doak Walker were inducted into Lions 🦁 Pride. The Detroit Lions wall of honor as the first members in 2009.

I-494 Tommy tried hard to emulate Bobby Layne. Would be nice to see the Lions win one before I die. My Dad got to enjoy the championships either side of his turning 30, he's been gone more than a dozen years.

My dads friend (who was friends with Bobby's son) came over last night and was telling some ridiculous stories about Bobby and his sons. He said they tried to out do him in every way.

Love to hear the stories, and that was one of the great stories, that's the reason. I don't think the curse was the reason for poor performance. I believe we could rub that on ownership..
