I have been at it for 4 years. I did more of a Refold style for the first 10 months, then I went full ajatt for about a year. Now I go back and forth depending on what I have going on, where my motivation is at, etc. Nobody says you have to pick and stick or do things exactly the same all the time. I find that I don't burn out this way. The most important thing is that I have a personal bare minimum routine for when I'm not feeling up to the full on sprint or when I really want to watch or do other things as well as Japanese. I don't go under my personal minimum and I don't ever skip days. I do my reviews and new cards everyday and at least an hour of immersion and some passive listening. That's my personal minimum. If I do that for a couple of weeks, I generally start feeling more motivation to add more. Then I may go whole hog for several weeks and ride the wave of motivation. I have a 6½ year old and if I didn't have so many responsibilities I would probably do more ajatt style. But sometimes I just want to watch things for fun as well. I don't pressure myself or guilt myself if I feel like watching a new anime with English subs. As long as I have done at least my minimum for the day, I feel like it's fine. Plus, at my current level I can often track both the Japanese audio and English subs simultaneously when I'm watching just for fun. I often end up mining during my lazy fun time watching. Just because I want to. Out of curiosity. The top priority is picking routines that you'll show up for daily. Routines you can realistically stick to while still making progress. Balance baby!
i basically do AJATT-lite, or the opposite of refold, 1 hour of non-immersion a day, with passive freeflow listening. i was using a timer, but i stopped since i'm actually a fake elitist
