- In this video, I'll show you how I learn a new color palette with my watercolor paints. Sometimes you need to change things up and this is how I manage it.

Brilliant, and yes, I may make swatches from each pan, but nope. If I mix any new colors, it’s making a page of rocks, mushrooms, birds, water, whatever. Then if I like it I make note of what I used. Way more fun and not tedious at all. I did that today with my new Kuretake Gansai Tambi Sumi blacks set. Perfect for moody paintings, rocks, shadows, etc.
Great idea! 👍🏻 Rocks, mushrooms, and birds, all my favorite things. I need to try the Gansai paints. I always see them and they look nice.
@@IllustrationsByPete I have nearly every set of the Gansai Tambi paints, love them! Now, they are designated as watercolors, but do behave somewhat differently. You have several 6-pan sets, gem, pastel, metallics, pearls. Then you have the moody 6-pan sets in Boku Undo E-sumi, Graphite, the 24 set Art Nouveau, list goes on with up to 72 set I think. Just try a smaller set to play with them. Most of them lift well, many granulate in some form, and can also present with some gouache-like qualities. Super fun!
I definitely need these. 🙂
@@IllustrationsByPete You’ll have a blast. They’re kind of addicting and many of them are open stock.
Awwww! I love your Loose-Lipped Ladyfish! Do you think she sinks ships? Well, maybe a canoe! Wouldn’t that be fun!
And thank you for listing the products you used in this episode; I find them very helpful!
Sorry Anna, I missed this comment. Could be a ladyfish. I appreciate you. 🙂
Lmao 🤣 😂😂😂😂 at being in the woods and not having their swatch on the huge card! I seriously could not stop laughing!! Thank you 😊
Glad I could make you smile. 🙂
Another great video and Q&A Pete! To stop granulation you can add a very very small amount of white gouache/paint and it should help a lot! Happy Memorial Day everyone!...Rus from Pennsylvania ❤️🖌🎨🇺🇲🤓
That's a great tip, thanks! 👍🏻 Happy Memorial day!
@starbarks4u Very interesting...my brain is processing this tip in 6 directions at once. Are you using a heavily diluted PW4 zinc oxide?
You have a new subscriber.
Your art speaks to me and I love your sense if humor!
Thank you! Welcome to the channel. 🙂
Glanced at my notes about how to optimize granulating watercolors & considered the exact opposite of each of those tips. Maybe using one or more of these approaches would help minimize intensity of granulation:
> use cold press paper
> make sure paper is fully dry when granulating paint is applied
> heavily dilute the granulating watercolor, allowing it to rest long enough for heavier pigment particles to settle onto palette & avoid being picked up by brush
> use a heat gun to immediately dry the paper after granulating paint is applied
All good possibilities. Lots of things to test out. 👍🏻
I did get the Hanemule cold press and love it!
And i NEVER was compelled to make a giant mixed swatch card , i follow NO rules and love your channel...hilarious and real 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoy these, and the paper. I'm trying to use up some old paper I have and then it's this from them on. 👍🏻
Wonderful, as always,Pete. Love the “Lovely Lady Lizard”….you know I name your art…LOL. Thank you for what you do for all your content and work you put into your videos. Keep it up, we Love ‘em!! ❤
Thank you Denise! Now I see the lady lizard. 😂 I appreciate you! 🙂
Yeah, pastels can be an issue - some people start having breathing issues because of it.
You could use oil pastels where the dust is not an issue with it - but is slightly different in use than dry pastels. Oil pastels are usually better because they are more durable, adhere better and they don't create dust. Oh and usually color of the pigments tend to be more intense.
Nice drawing as usual ;) :).
Thanks for the info. I never really seemed to get along with oil pastels but it's been a long time since I tried them. Maybe things would be different now. 👍🏻
@@IllustrationsByPete Like any other medium - takes a little bit to get the hang of it.
Goose:Self Portrait. 😊😊😊 we never see ourselves accurately. Perhaps the white goose longs to be a peacock? Love your work! Keep making us squirm.
Thank you Linda! That's very true. It started out as a fish and took on a life of its own. I love when art does that. 🙂
@@IllustrationsByPete Oh that's great! I saw a fish at first and was delighted when the goose emerged!!!
BTW, please remind us where to go to buy your original art. Today I got a baseball cap and a pillow because I couldn't fine the page with your originals on it!
Found it!!! Sorry. Old brain. 🥰🥰🥰
Thank you so much, Linda! You are truly appreciated. ❤️

enjoyed and chuckled
I'm glad I could make you smile. 🙂
I love this guy. First time i have seen him... you i mean
Thank you! I appreciate you. 🙂
Very cool 👍 thx for the entertainment 😂
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed this. 🙂
more granulation wet on wet,,, less with wet on dry,,, imo lol
I just have to ask… what astrological sign are you??
Hi Cherice! Late Nov. so Sagittarius.
@@IllustrationsByPete I am floored!! With all the organization of your desk and shelves I would have pegged you for a Virgo!! I am a textbook Virgo when it comes to organization and perfectionism. My husband is a Sagittarius. A playful sense of humor must be a Sag characteristic as you both share the same wit! Happy Memorial Day!!
If I don't stay organized I cannot function. Plus, it's very cathartic for me. I enjoy moving things around and reorganizing everything. It feels very satisfying. Happy Memorial day!
