You got paid as an intern? 🥺 Damn, I heard those existed, but didn't really believe it.
JK, I had a few paid, but most were definitely not at minimum wage equivalent even if I'd only worked 40 hours. A decade later, I still hear the "well you could get some valuable experience..." Nah, I have gotten valuable experience while getting $50/hr on a flexible schedule, doing something I'm directly passionate about. My only advice is to learn your worth and start demanding it. Once we accept less, it sets the tone for future bad offers unless you change careers. And there's zero shame in that, contrary to what Boomers drone on about. Niche down to what you are best at, and then test the waters. You might be pleasantly surprised.

In the US Navy, there is what they call "frocking." Promotions are generally decided once a year, and the people selected for promotion are promoted later - as much as a year and a half later. But a selectee can in many cases be "frocked." This means that they call you by your new rank, let you wear the symbol of your new rank, and (most important) give you the responsibility of your new rank. But you don't get the pay of your new rank or accumulate any time in that rank until the official date of your promotion.

Accrued PTO disappears at the end of the year but they wont let you use it. My job only keeps your PTO through the year. When the new year starts, your PTO resets and you lose all the previously accrued PTO. They say that they encourage you to use your PTO during the year so that you don't lose it, but when you request time off, they deny it because there is a 'shortage of people' or some other problem. Thus you never get to use your PTO.

    • @marcfuchs6938
      @marcfuchs6938 Месяц назад +7

Simple. Tell them if they won't let you use your PTO until last quarter of the year is there by both sides agreement, you will take it anytime within this last quarter without needing their approval. You are entitled to that PTO and if they won't work with you or don't acknowledge your basic rights, take them. If that leads to getting laid off, you better not be in this toxic company anymore, so you can only win.

Oh, that's actually better than what one of our hospitals does to its staff. They have a TINY lot for employee parking, which is reserved for the admin (like legit 20 spots for an entire hospital) and the rest is paid customer parking at $10/day. Your alternative is to park on the street, which has a 2hr limit because the hospital is a block away from the city centre, after which time parking enforcement WILL be waiting to fine you $40. There's been a dozen petitions. The best solution they've come up with is some imminent domain crap to seize homes and charge employees $150/mo for a single flat parking lot, not even a compound with levels.
The other hospital in the city is about ten blocks away with the exact same issues, though a slightly larger parking lot for employees (40 spots, maybe?)
All of this a few years after closing down the hospital that was at the outskirts of the city. Make it make sense 🤷‍♀️

How much personal time are you using to plan/pack for the trip, go to the airport, sit at the airport, sit on the tarmac, fly, land, sit, sit at the hotel, work, go to dinner with colleagues, spend time away from home in the hotel room, jet lag recovery, sickness recovery, damaged car expenses if you are forced into storing the car at the airport, etc.. and then what kind of home expenses are you accruing that should technically be paid for but aren't.. like the weekly DIY lawn maintenance, doubled clothes washing upon return, childcare burden placed onto the spouse or grandparents, loss of opportunity to use services you subscribe to including Gym or club(tennis) membership, Home TV/Internet, any gamepass type subscriptions, etc. Employees end up sacrificing quite a bit more than they realize when raising their hand for work travel, and you usually have to come right back home after the work is done.

He was sent an employee handbook two years ago by the parent company at the start of the new year that outlined the vacation policy. The non-union group was not compensated as the handbook stated they would be so he brought it up at a meeting. Nothing came of it. This year, according to the handbook (newly updated at the beginning of the year) he again was not compensated as per the handbook and again brought it up to his supervisors. At this point, he was told that the compensation mentioned would not happen until the beginning of 2025 and workers had to be with the company for 8 years. Now, from what he has told me all other aspects of the handbook are being followed, just not paid vacation hours. He feels that if it's in the handbook they have to follow, the company should be following ALL of the handbook themselves. Your thoughts? And I could use the lot at nights, weekends, holidays, etc for other things without paying more per month - and there were often events there or nearby. I probably saved much more than I spent.

Love your channel! I'm self-employed, so only a little applies directly to me. But you are righteous!
I've seen many of these things go on within organizations I deal with. However, a large proportion of people proportion of people work at will, without contracts. And of those, a very large number are utterly ignorant of recourse when an employer's demands are unfair. I hope you keep spreading the word.

Some places (like Boston) employees having to pay for parking is the law. It’s to encourage ride sharing and using public transportation. Companies are allowed to subsidize an MBTA pass and often it is free.

I work at a university and we close for the winter break every year. During this closure we have to take 3-4 days off unpaid. So I have to choose between using my PTO or not get paid. It’s annoying but we get like 2 weeks off in total so it’s a good trade off.

As someone who works in HR, I feel seen! 😭 Even though our job is to protect the business, we are employees too! If you hate these scams, how about being the one selected to enforce them while internally screaming 😍
On the whack policies topic, it’s 80% of the time leadership being controlling instead of creating a healthy culture of trust. Now everyone gets to be on edge and even more stressed. Which is obviously great for retention 🙄

Expectation of being available for overtime (paid) before your shift with no discussion from the night before after overtime the night before. We're doing so much overtime right now, I quickly told my new boss that hey it's good to be enthusiastic about offering overtime during this busy time, but expecting last minute overtime over ever single available minute before, during, and after my shift for days on end? No. That's what led to making my dinner with expired milk tonight and getting violently ill and having to clock out two hours early (after working two hours of overtime tonight already and four hours last night).
Asking and expecting a large amount of overtime and having the balls to say oh but take care of your mental health when you clearly don't understand the emotional labor of doing my job to my level of ability, that's just baloney.

Recently had an employer offer me a $130 dollar course to certify me for a $15 license test. I went by the licensing agency and took the test (15 questions multiple guess) handed them the license and was immediately taken off the schedule lol.

    *Company Vehicle*
Sounds good (reliable vehicle, free maintenance and maybe even gas), but it is an excuse to pay the employees less -- since they do not _need_ a personal vehicle, they do not need to be paid enough to afford one.
This birds the employees to the company -- try getting a job without your own "reliable transportation" (meaning not bus) these days.
They make it harder for you to leave the company by paying you less.

Having you watch mind numbing training videos and then just shoving you into that role without any 1-on-1 training. I've had that happen at a few jobs and most think I'll be fine since I have over a decade of job experience in that role but at different companies. Note: i'm in the food industry. Every company's register layout is different and when I say that McDonalds' registers are the most complicated I've ever seen is an understatement o.o!!!! Not to mention the limitation on what someone can do before needing a manager over to approve or remove something -.-
