I'm in Nevada City, at about 2800', and our property still has a lot of green. I go out with the weed eater and it looks like lawn when I'm done. I'm one of those who is always super freaked out about fire, but right now, we are still pretty moist where we are. It also helps that Cal Fire's tankers are less than a mile (as far as the crow flies) from our house. We've had small fires start in the Penn Valley area this year, but any forward progress is quickly taken care of, and the rate of speed is low-moderate because the fuels aren't dry enough. I'm surprisingly not too freaked out about the weather this week because of our wet fuels, but that doesn't mean I'm going to be careless. We have a "GO" bag near our door 24/7!!

Saw a plywood wall on house that went thru a wildfire that had a few manzanitas close by. The plywood surface scorched black everywhere except where the manzanita blocked the heat from reaching the wall. The manzanita didn't burn because it was all live fuel with dead debris cleared from around it that might have desiccated the plants moisture allowing them to burn.
Already Greenwood California has had an impact. Bringing back ptsd from last years terrible fire up from Georgetown. My son and his family lives in Greenwood. Lincoln has stopped using goats (Every year since I moved in 10 yrs ago they use goats) My house lines up with Markham Revine. They sent Army Core of Engineers out to access but only thing they have done is weed along the fence line. We have been sending emails to the City of Lincoln to cut all the trees on the fence line encroaching our fence lines all the down. Dead Tree's and weeds around 5ft. It's dry and so many people shoot off all kinds of illegal and legal fireworks. We quit fireworks since the drought began. Neighbors are too busy to help. I guess we can only cut the trees encroaching. Lincoln told us for last 5 yrs that it's a big job. Told my hu by to get a ladder and cut what encroaches. He is 75 noway. That a dosabled Vietnam Veteran is gonna get on a ladder anymore. He is disabled and so is his young wife. Got any ideas? I getting nervous. I ask my husband if I should go talk with our Awesome Fire Dept. He said yeah no they can't do anything. This is the first year that we were told the Army Corp of Engineers own it! We did go through 2019 and trimmed low branches then goats & sheep do an awesome job!😅
I want the ending. How flammable are snags in burn scars? Hiking in the Sierra's a lot in June, saw green meadows full of water and mosquito's. Yet hillsides completely dry and full of widow makers and essentially charcoal trunks.
Greenwood and parts of Cool were under evacuation and stand by. House fies turned into 20 acre. Not sure if its out but family is safe. Last year they were evacuated for a monthish! That was pretty much end of summer beginning fall.
Great info-wondering your thoughts on the claimed effect of the aerial attack/retardant on the Royal fire. BTW my neighbor must have the same pool pump!
A question related to moisture content - what about pine forest where there is a high oil content - how soon in the season does this add to the fuel load?
That’s my question too. Are pine plant communities more flammable than areas of Manzanita and Black Oaks? And is this more a question of fire season timing since pines typically grow higher elevations and thus retain moisture until later in the season.
The Tahoe hotshot boss told me that a fuel break along a ridge that masticated a long band of manzanita and cleared of residual debris stopped a future fire dead in its tracks even though 8 years had passed, and a young stand of solid manzanita had grown back. The regrown stand of manzanita was too young to produce any dead leaves and branches to ignite the live vegetation.
I've been assuming that the fire weather freak out is really a resource issue. If the foothills are all on fire, even a slow moving fire in the mountains might have to be ignored. So, here in Chester, I am not scared, but working at prepping.

Over 2700, still fairly green now. Very moist when the grasses got cut 2 weeks ago, wet, moist, clogging the blade.

What about using a centrifuge to extract the moisture from the leaves to determine the water content? It would be quicker than waiting for it to dry.
