  • A tribute to the month long immersive voyage within American Samoa’s waa. Only the waa has transformed and evolved into the sport now called the fautasi race as part of the flag day celebrations , once a year.
The fautasi race culminates a months long journey of many villages who practice day in and day out both on the water and on land conditioning men to work together as one, fau tasi.
But from my journey within the villages of Aua, Fagasa, and Iliili, has shown me that this sport is more than just a sport. It’s deep rooted traditions that have evolved into something bigger. It’s the show of pride for village and family amongst other villages. For some it’s a spiritual journey. But most importantly it’s a means to cultivate a man out of the youth who get to be a part of all of this.
For me, understanding the fautasi on the deep level that I has truly allowed me to stand amongst Samoans and be proud of what this all is even as a non Samoan. To root each and every one of these villages with no bias because I know how much heart spirit time sacrifice and yes even money goes into this one day.
And on a One Ocean, One People note, fautasi is very much taking place of the story of wa’a for American Samoa. As I’ve mentioned above, the traditional waa had evolved from warfare to transportation and eventually to sport, what it is today.
This montage serves as a tribute of gratitude to all who’ve taken me in on this journey being welcomed in with open arms. Both on the fautasi as well as the many who made attempts to get me connected with other villages.
What a journey it’s been! And can’t wait to be a part of the big day! 🤙🏽🚣🏽
Side note: The choice of a tokelauan song for this Samoan tradition is my love for the beautiful contemporary sound of Te Vaka’s music that reflects Moananui. And also reflects the bigger picture of the initiative, “One Ocean, One People”. An extensive cross Pacific Islands voyage from Samoa to Palau. 🫂🌊
Disclaimer: I do not own rights to the music.

Hi, question, how do you connect with people on your travels? How do you really immerse in their culture?

Ah big question! In short, just genuine authentic and intention desire to connect with people. No bs. The intention to want to meet and learn from them as well as spend time with them is the biggest factor. 😊
