    Awesome sounding song! I've been using Drop Bb tuning on my 24.75" Les Paul for some time now. I actually do quite a lot of soloing in that tuning, but I guess I'm used to playing with slightly more tension and maybe I'm losing out on some sustain in this tuning. My gauge set is 11,16,20,34,52,68.

I tend to think SGs can take a punishing of shred, and since its a thicker guitar it has more heavier sustain, deep bassy(but not too bassy!!)growl on the low end and the high end just sings and the long pinch harmonics are clearer also. I cant wait to put these babies on when the time comes😲😃🤘

      @@kevindavid37 In fact yes, it works. It's also possible to intimate it. Problem I still keep having though is that when I strum the string harder, the pitch wobbles slightly on the low B String. I guess depending on the guitar specifically bit I found that I need to be gentle with the pick otherwise it sounds very weird :/
      But let's not forget that that what baritone and multi scale guitars are created, if it was not necessary to have longer scale for low runnings they would not have existed :D

    In my experience you can drop tune any guitar as long as you set it up for heavier strings. I've gone down to B on my old SG (wish I didn't sell it) and it did death metal and chugs just fine, strung it with 11-52 ernie balls for that. That was a killer song by the way.

  • @joeygarner1636
    @joeygarner1636 4 года назад +25

    I have a question:
    There's a certain sound a Les Paul has, if you listen closely it has a "bigger sound". I would love to know if the Jim Root Strat, or Mick Thomson Jackson also have that big sound? It's a small difference, but once you hear it in person and notice that big sound, it's hard to go back to any other guitar. I haven't found another guitar that can produce that full sound the Gibson's have.
    As you said, Gibson aren't very playable, especially for solos. But the sound is so damn good.

    • @archdukefranzferdinand4992
      @archdukefranzferdinand4992 4 года назад +2

      the shorter scale usually gives it punchier bass, there are a few singlecut options that are more playable (especially for metal) and have the same scale, the best one is probably the ESP Eclipse.

    The dudes from Nile tune their Dean guitars to Drop A, and they all have used regular six strings with a 24.75 inch scale. If it works for them, I can easily say that it would work more than perfect for you!
    I personally would rather just use a Fender scale length guitar, or even a baritone or a multi scale.

      @@flowryan5829 I do have some fret buzz on my low A but it's to be expected. I raised the action a bit and it sounds pretty clean. If you switch to the Les Paul by the Mammoth Slinky pack they are perfect.

      LeoLicc well, looks like it‘s time for the good ol‘ 72 String again. Or I go completely bonkers and do the Lee Malia with a '80 String 😂

      LeoLicc It looks kind of funky but it works just fine. No fret buzz, no wobbly string, no „ooooooing“-sound. It‘s the second best thing one can do when tuned that low, right after buying a baritone guitar. And the tone it brings is just insane.

      Stephen O'Malley has a .74 low 6th on his TB1000S (same scale as a les paul)

    Maybe up the gauge? I don’t trust tuning stability with the scale tho

    I've an Epiphone Les Paul 7 string - so it's always in B tunings, sometimes I drop it down to A and I've no issues with it. for me, the tone is in the hands that play it!

    I just bought a set of Ernie Ball Mammoth Slinky 12-62. Did you have to adjust The bridge and tail piece?

    I have my LP in A with a 74 on the bottom. It's okay. I have a 27" Solar with an Evertune on the way though 😁

    • @SuffyANX

      How does the intonation on the higher frets hold up with a .74 on the bottom? I always thought that going above a .62 or .64 on a Les Paul-style guitar would be a recipe for disaster, but if you can get a .74 intonated then that's pretty impressive for a 24.75" guitar
