It prevents fertilization by affecting the egg and sperm quality/ability. Primarily it is a SPERMACIDE. They inhibit sperm motility and acrosomal enzyme activation so that sperm rarely reach the fallopian tube and are unable to fertilize the ovum. It causes the lining to phagocytize the sperm.
They are not abortifacients.
The only time implantation *may* be prevented is if it is inserted *after* unprotected sex.
They only say the word *may* for *legal* reasons, not actual scientific ones, and they do so because they can't prove otherwise. (It is impossible to test the difference between a thin lining and a regular one as you can't negate the spermacide effect of an IUD; you would have to test those who only have thin lining and those who don't but those with thin linings are generally caused by other issues like PCOS, scarring, etc - which can affect implantation.)
The fact is an inflamed or thin uterine lining does NOT stop implantation.
Pregnancy is possible if a woman has penetrative intercourse within 7 days of implantation. We just can't prove or disprove if there is a reduction on rates.
A thin endometrium *may* be associated with a higher incidence of preterm birth, low birth weight, and miscarriage.
We DO know that there ARE births, which proves that a thin lining doesn't prevent implantation.
A thin lining does *not* prevent the occurrence of pregnancy
Copper IUDs and Plan B do NOT prevent implantation, no matter the fiction being spread.
