Twyford, a beautiful historical village. So much history in a compact location. We missed it all :)

  • On a day out in Winchester in June 2022, we passed through Twyford, Hampshire on the Stagecoach Bus 69 on the way home. From our vantage point on the top deck we could see how beautiful and historic the village was, so we planned to come back and have a walk around.
We started the walk on Hazeley Road, and walked round in a circle, the route was roughly Hazeley Road, Bourne Lane, Church Road, Churchfields Road, School Road, Queen Street, Park Lane, Roman Road and back to Hazeley Road.
We noticed many Georgian fronted buildings, and at lead one Queen Anne House
The parish church, St Mary the Virgin, has a long history. There is a bronze age stone circle under the church, possibly 4000 years old, followed by a Saxon Church, then a Norman Church. This was rebuild twice, once in the medieval period, and once in Victorian times. More details in the film.
I researched the history of Twyford after we made the video. Big lesson learned. We should research before we go, then we will know what to look for. We missed sarsen stones, a roman villa and loads of interesting things. Twyford is situated on the River Itchen, around three miles south of Winchester in the South Downs National Park. It got its name from the two fords across the river - which meanders through the parish and whose water meadows are of European and national importance. Twyford is bursting with fabulous old places - there are seven Ancient Monuments within the parish, and about 70 listed buildings. It is unsurprising when you consider that the village got going in the Bronze Age and an early Saxon cemetery with sixth century burial goods was discovered there in 2008.
We will be returning to Twyford to find the Seven Ancient Monuments...
