Incase anyone was wondering, the rug smelled so bad because of the chemicals used to make it called "volatile organic compounds." It's completely normal for a brand new rug or carpet to smell really bad when you unwrap it, and usually dissipates within a few days to a few weeks, based on how big it is. Most household furnishings are made with those chemicals, but because the rug was packaged tightly the smell had no place to dissipate.
