Good video; great editing. Edmund actually considers the lack of information the game gives its greatest failing. He comments as such in blog posts for his newest game, Mewgenics, which is something of a spiritual sequel to Isaac, and with that game he made a deliberate point to explain its mechanics as much as possible. In that same blog post, he states that Isaac was designed to be vague early on to aid in the discovery, but after hundreds of items, trinkets, etc. were added in later DLCs, he regrets the decision. After the online update, Edmund wants the developers to implement something like the External Item Descriptions mod in-game.
Ooooh that would be wonderful. Especially since atm mods, including External Item Description, are now null until the creators update them to work with Repentance+.
@@WittySomethingThey mostly work, you have to copy the mod folder from Repentance to Repentance+. Plenty of guides available. You can't have any with online play, though
I think the first time you see or pick up a item you shouldn't be told what it does, only after the first time then you should get a clear description when you see it again.
The way you edited this video is so unique and well done! I love that you found a way to show more then just gameplay with a commentary which a lot of other youtubers do. Great vid!
Well done review & I appreciate the thematic creativity that went into editing this video while remaining very clear on what it is you’re explaining & showcasing. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think you even went as far as creating your own backdrops & rooms for some shots?
i thought this videos was really nice! really nice presentation obviously, but also your analysis. I haven't thought about some of these things, despite having more than a thousand hours in the game
This is one of the best analyses I've seen on this game, and I've been into it since before Wrath of the Lamb. Well done. Beside the low/no-health characters, Isaac's difficulty also manifests (in a relatively minor way, I guess) in how the lategame bosses in Afterbirth onwards (like Hush and Delirium) have the boss armor mechanic, which caps how much damage per second they can take - coupled with their complex attack patterns that even experienced players can have a hard time dodging, they can be a legitimate challenge to all but the truly most gamebreaking runs. (And I suppose there is also Delirium's infamously unpredictable behavior which make it particularly frustrating to go after. Nothing like a potential Tainted Lost win attempt being ruined by Delirium telefragging you!)
Precisely why have Infinity%. No matter how many times a Spiked Rock killed me as Tainted Lost, or Bomb Fly Bridge spawned when I was Tainted Jacob, I just kept playing.
0:22 Isaac sure has its weird quirks with this. In most instances, DLC are basically content packs that just go ontop of a game, but here, each one is basically considered a new game that just requires the previous one to be owned(Minus the Wotl to Rebirth-jump, rebirth is a full remake of Wotl). Technically speaking, Rebirth's last update was the v1.05 hotfix released on February 11, 2015. The game never received any new updates since then, so all the bugs, weird balance oopsies and lack of QoL options(For example, the stat and charge displays not existing or the game not being localized without mods.) that were there back then are still here now. I actually kinda wish they would backport some things, because it kinda sucks to have to suffer an overall worse experience for just wanting to play an "earlier game" instead of Repentance, but it is argubly a bit too late for that, almost being 10 years since that last Rebirth update and 3 "expansions" in that would all need their own seperate backporting effort for some features.
You have no idea how much I feel the point about the synergies feeling "natural". To use another rogue like as an example, Enter The Gungeon, added a whole update dedicated to adding unique synergies between the weapons and items. However, in my opinion it just doesn't feel as cool to get a synergy on Gungeon as it is in Isaac because it doesn't really feel natural as you said. I can pick up Tech X and Dr Fetus and go "it does make sense for my bombs to have ring of lasers now" at oppose to picking up Casey and The Nail Gun on Gungeon and go "So a weapon that's a melee bat shoots out a cluster of nails now... I guess..."
The point I was making wasn't that the synergies feel natural, it's that there's a distinction between hard coded and natural synergies. Tech X and Dr. Fetus would actually be a hard coded synergy because there is an explicit line of code for it to function the way it does. A natural one would be Dr. Fetus and Pyromaniac because they work well together despite not having any specifications that they should function different when you have both. Natural synergies feel more natural because the items still function exactly how they did before, so the result of the two doesn't feel contrived. When it comes to the hard coded synergies, it could be very true that the way they're programmed to work together feel more natural than Enter the Gungeon, but it's been a while since I've played Gungeon, so I don't know.
Wow perfect time to hop on youtube for the first time in several days! This video is very well put-together! Hoping more people see this after they hop off their Isaac Online sessions :D
This video is amazing, the editing, the references, everything was just perfect. I do not get for a second how this has like 2k views (at the time of this comment)
Insanely great and creative production! You incorporated the games design and characteristics great into your explanation. Keep it up! (Improve mix and paste and you are viral soon)
buddy how long did this take to edit like holy frick, like just 0:29 and 0:32 how many nests did you need to create to have all of those on screen at once HOW
Now talk about Fiend Folio and the story of Antibirth. (jk jk, but both stories are really interesting and both take unique twists on Isaac and how they both review, observe, integrate, and master different mechanics! Fiend Folio is like Community Remix and Devil Harvest's big brother, mastering the ideals of what makes a good enemy.... 700 different times! The way Fiend Folio is able to uniquely take Isaac and bend it to the whims of what was initially a funny little enemy mod to becoming what many recognize as Isaac's unofficial DLC, with RENREN's Exclesior to boot, would make a great video essay! I'd love to hear both an interview with FF devs like Erfly, Maria, Jerbs, Sin, and more, as well as a deep dive to what makes Fiend Folio, well, Fiend Folio!) This is a amazing video and I am glad i found it (:
TBH, it's fun to watch others play TBoI on stream, but much like Noita, it's way, way, way, *WAAAYYY* too complicated. 🤯 The last thing I want to do whilst gaming is encounter and memorize LITERALLY 1200+ items or combinations or enemy types or spells or abilities or pieces of furniture or "not on Wednesdays but definitely Fridays and Sundays after 6p but not after 12" kinds of sheet. 🙄That's bloody exhausting, and everyday existence is already overwhelming enough, ya dig? 😂
I don’t really agree with an emphasis on streaks. While yes, it does feel skillful to win the game I don’t think most people play the same character over and over again, so run to run could be easier or harder.
I just said that a way they could emphasize skill could be to focus on streaks, not that they should do it. Also they could allow you to have streaks for multiple characters running at the same time, have a streak score for random, have a streak score for rotating through the cast, and have a high score for an overall streak. There are a ton of esys they could implement streaks beyond what I mentioned in the video.
It's weird, I played this game obsessively since Wrath of the Lamb, but not long after reaching Dead God I lost interest suddenly. With all these characters and paths, I still would lose interest in finishing runs by Womb 2. I've tried different mods but they don't make a difference it seems. Once you unlock everything and have seen everything the question of "will I do well on this run?" is immediately "yeah probably" and by the time you have a strong build it's proven. This wasn't an issue back in Rebirth, I reached 100% repeatedly in it, but I don't think it's a flaw of Repentance either.
How many of those hits were due to telefragging? The reason I got hit so much in that clip was because I was playing poorly. Playing one of the challenge characters into delirium is unfair because an unfair hit or two can cause your death immediately, but this doesn't happen 12 times to me. This is compounded by the fact that delirium comes at a point in the run where you usually have a lot of items to beat him quickly enough that the fight isn't long enough to reasonably get hit 12 times, which is further compounded by skilled players being able to find more items in a run to increase the chance of having an overwhelmingly favourable position against delirium, rewarding skill. The reason I chose delirium is because he is considered the most unfair thing in the game, communicating the idea of unfairness most effectively. Any other example would be subtle enough that people might miss how the clip relates to unfairness. The example was meant to show that Isaac is still relatively fair even when pushed to its extreme, but the logic can be applied to every part of the game. Even if you disagree that delirium is fair on most characters, the point is that more health leads to more consistency which leads to more fairness which leads to more skill.

Very well made, love how you edited it in the menu style
Now THIS is an analysis
i watched 30 seconds of this video in a small screen and immediately saw quality content. Keep going dude.
Holy shit dude, the editing on this video is AMAZING! Great work, this is high effort stuff :)
yooooooo
Ey nice to see you here
Well done review & I appreciate the thematic creativity that went into editing this video while remaining very clear on what it is you’re explaining & showcasing. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think you even went as far as creating your own backdrops & rooms for some shots?
I used the debug to spawn in a bunch of enemies and such to showcase some points, so some of the things shown would not appear naturally
...Well isn't the timing on this pretty spot-on.
issac we love you
:)
Awesome video! Love your editing and the unique subtitles!
Amazingly made video, the visuals were great.
Insanely well done video! I love eye zach
i thought this videos was really nice! really nice presentation obviously, but also your analysis. I haven't thought about some of these things, despite having more than a thousand hours in the game
This is one of the only videos I’ve found on the game to capture what really makes it special. Bravo; this is a video I can genuinely say that I love.
Awesome use of the level transition screen between points
Probably a top 3 most impressive isaac video

Incredible production value for such a small channel. Good job!
The best isaac analysis video I've seen and ever will see. Great job with the presentation too.
Good job
Trully a magnificent video about the variety of isaac
Well done
instant sub . i wish at a minimum spin down gave the "external info" type info for online play !
fantastically done visuals
Wow what a well put together video! Has probably taken a lot of time to put together! Well done
I need a full version of that intro and outro
Isn't that the opening and stuff for The Isaac of Isaac mod? Or it might be another, but I do remember it's a silly mod that does it.
