Remember, 10,000 views and if Rhett sees this video....Tube Screamer Tat going on the left arm. I'll film it and make a video with my pal Nate as he does the tat.

Rumor has it that the true source of Rhett Shull's hatred for Tune Screamers is when he played through one and instead of giving him sick tone like the rest of us, he was forever cursed with that goofy haircut which no pair of scissors could clip off.

As someone who has been playing for just over 30 years now, the hardest thing for me and almost any electric guitar player to learn is the difference of how a guitar sounds to you, playing by yourself with your amp, and playing in the context of a band or a recorded track. You quickly learn that killer tone you get by yourself, either a)completely disappears or gets washed out in band/recording mix (at best-Big Muffs anyone?) or b)sounds absolutely like dogsh*t in a band/recording mix(at worst)! Sometimes, depending on your goal, a killer band/recording guitar tone, will sound thin and "crappy" on it's own. I know it was a tough lesson for me to grasp initially!
Best example of this, as I'm sure you're more than aware of, is Boston and Tom Scholz(and by extension Def Leppad in the Hysteria era as they used Tom's designed Rockmans for the majority of those guitar tones). That first Boston album and Hysteria just sounds huge and lush with all those guitars blending and singing together. But if you listen to the guitars on those albums in isolation, they sound kinda thin, kinda honky with massive mid-range, and sometime brittle. Because of them sounding like that, if gives the bass, drums, vocals, and keys more space, and when they blended together, each individual part/instrument sounds huge in context with other.
Oh and you gained another subscriber! Great stuff!

I had in-ears tonight at a gig and ran a mates TS9 into a stock Blues Jr 4 with a Tele and couldn't believe how good it sounded. I haven't owned one since starting electric and have owned many KoT's and other high end OD's since then...and the setup tonight with just a simple TS9 was one of the best sounds I've ever had...still in shock...trusty ol TS9...can't believe i used to hate them. I agree they're definitely a mic'd-only pedal, they're terrible into anything digital and not my pick for an amp on its own.

TBF Rhett's tone on his video was totally anti-screamer in every aspect possible. Not only it had tons of honky low mids but also lacked bass, it was almost as if he had it EQed it wrong..
Your tone was amazing in every setting but my favorite is when you crank the tone. Great video my man.

I wonder if you have heard of Victoria Amplifiers, I’ve been in love with them for many years. Before Mark moved to Chicago, he was in Salt Lake.
A lot of folks on the Tele guitar forum talked them up, and I bought a couple and LOVE them. They do everything right, and they record SO easy. The Sovereign would suit you, and I love the Lux. There’s a Chicagolux that I also want but have the Victorilux. It seems like the more you get into them, there’s always another must have.
And I’m a metal head. I like the 80s rock music, old Def Leppard, George Lynch and Ratt. But I also like new music, like Angels and Airwaves. HUGE guitars, nice music, no anger. I know that Tom uses Marshall dual monobloc power amps, and you can use various preamps.
So I got one of those in a 50w for the Greenbacks, and have a collection of preamps for it. When you want hair…
Also a Mesa power amp, a dual 100 (Vintage30 and Creambacks). That amp takes you toward the Soldano style, much more modern. But the preamps are a good part of that equation.
It’s funny how the amp and speaker are distinct, they make a massive component of your sound, yet preamps all have their own certain colors.
Some people like to add in pedals, I only have the KSR Ceres pedal and it’s a little beast. I go directly into the power amps with it and it hangs with all of my nasty sounds.
Funny how I never pipe into my amps with a pedal, I guess I have too many options that there’s no need. I just feel like certain amps do low gain SO well, like the Marshall JMP, why bother trying to hop it up when there are things like the KSR into the Mesa and Marshall dual mono bloc. Or much more nostalgic preamps like the ADA MP1.
But honestly the Victoria amps, single SM57 and they have a full ready to record sound immediately. Basically these amps have a nice bottom end that makes the recordings sound professional. They were the easiest to use. My first WOW came from them.
What I HEAR HERE is your mostly mid recording, probably go more extreme outside with the mic, try to get the full cabinet sound and dial up the treble or presence so you have a wider range, more top, your nice mid, and more bottom. And play like you mean business, if you’re going to listen into a sound, it’s nice to have a solid riff. Even Smoke on the Water.
Don’t worry about Rhett, he’s on his own journey. We all are. Regards.

Rhett hates Tube Screamers because they are the one OD pedal that he cant manage to make sound like total ass. With all due respect, many of that guy's overdrive tones are basically unusable for most people... totally blown out low ends, weird overloading going on in some of the frequencys, and somehow managing to push almost any pedal into fuzz seems to be what he's after most of the time. I'm truely surprized that his bizarre tastes in high gain tone havent lost him a job yet.
