      I hate to break it to you, but I don't think it was just 1 burger. In big productions like this, they tend to shoot multiple takes over several hours, so that burger likely landed on a massive pile of other half eaten burgers. And Pitt was probably feeling sick after eating so many of them, so I don't blame him for taking 1 bite and throwing away the rest.

      @@BL00DYME55 Most movies shoot multiple takes, the size of the production isn't the most relevant factor. Directing style definitely is though. Some directors like Clint eastwood barely ever make a second take. Others like David Fincher can reach up to a hundred takes, and this is not counted in hours but days for a single shot. Throwing the burger in the trash is most likely to show that his character doesn't mind wasting food. If it was related to the actor but not the character, he could have been eating the last bit of the burger at the beginning of the scene instead.

Directed by Orson Welles, at the thirty minute mark there is a four and a half minutes uncut scene of him eating a strawberry shortcake while having a conversation with Agnes Moorehead. They carefully placed the shortcake behind other items on the kitchen table so he's probably just eating whipped cream the whole time, but you have to wonder how many times they filmed that scene before Welles was happy with what he got.

My wife and I if we eat out always tend to prefer public patios outside or under porches and I’ve noticed in city centers which can be very stressful with rushing and traffic congestions, typical passerby’s tend to slow down and relax when there’s multiple restaurants with people just slowly indulging themselves outside. Pit and Jolie’s 2005 Mr. & Mrs. Smith has long been one of my favorite action movies. Specifically, their dinner scene (after they’ve now found out each other’s secret but are trying not to play their hands) stands out as one of the best, most tense, most exciting, and even funniest scenes of the film, largely due to Pitt’s amazing eat-acting because in that scene Pitt is trying to keep up appearances but he’s also paranoid Jolie may be trying to poison him. His subtle hesitation with every bite, every chew, or sip of his drink is in a class of its own.
    God, I love that movie.

  • @JamVar
    @JamVar Год назад +1

    My theory is it serves to underscore/tie together what an actor does during a scene. When a character/characters are eating, they're also probably talking. When characters are talking - in most good movies, anyway - they're asking questions, giving answers, thinking, having conflict, finding out information, etc. There's tension, pauses, possibly resolution. The actions of eating line up quite nicely with the natural flow of a conversation.
    Think about that diner scene from Breaking Bad. Walt talks about the next move toward Gus while Jesse chows down on fruit. While Jesse thinks, the natural gap might be filled in by him poking and prodding at the fruit on his plate or he might take a bite while he ponders. Alternatively, he might retort back to Walt (like he does at the end of the actual scene) then take a bite while staring him down, letting whatever he just said sink in.
    To me, it's just another tool in a filmmaker AND an actor's toolbox that allows a scene to be interesting and authentic. As a plus, plenty can be learned about the current state (and/or general M.O.) of a character by the way they eat. Quickly and ravenously like the tortured and starved Jesse Pinkman at the start of El Camino? Or barely touching the luxurious strudel on his plate, like the confident, omnipotent Hans Landa from Inglorious Basterds?
    tl;dr Eating is a visual fidget spinner that keeps a scene moving, the info flowing, the actor acting, and the audience interested. Just my $.02

    A primary reason Pitt frequently eats on screen is because it's a subset of a common Meisner acting technique. An actor that does what is called a "secondary task" on screen or stage like sorting papers, washing the dishes, eating, etc. allows them to think less directly about 'acting.' They can be more free on screen because they're attention isn't entirely focussed on saying the lines. They can eat and talk as opposed to just talk, which allows them to make stronger and more dynamic character choices. Marlon Brandon was the original KING of eating on screen. Streetcar Named desire is a great example of this, Brando does it much more subtly than Pitt. When Brad does it, the food eating becomes a little too much of the scene. It steals my attention when the focus should never be on the secondary action, it's a tool to help an actor be more natural and in their body.

    I'm glad you made this video, it was well done. I thought I was the only one that noticed all the eating. That being said I don't care why. Just let me watch the man eat. It's like what Tom Cruise is to running in movies.

    I remember watching a string of Brad Pitt movies one summer, and one day, I had a go at doing an impression of his acting just to amuse myself. Anyway, I immediately looked for something to nibble on, and that's when I discovered he's always eating in his movies, lol. At the time, this wasn't a well-known meme or anything, but now it's everywhere, and it's just funny to see him keep up this little acting quirk.

    I used to do some acting when I was younger and I also realized eating during a scene could help you act more casual, your brain is distracted by eating so your body calms down and can prevent you from “acting too much”

    It could also be because eating scenes are quite difficult to do. So when a director can pull off a elaborate one he is simply a good one who can make good movies

    I think it’s probably more of a subconscious, the character seems more real type of situation. Given that her tailors it to the character, the more he can get into the head of the person he’s playing, the better he’d be at playing him.

    When I was a kid, around 2004, my mum (RIP) saw Brad Pitt when she was shopping for groceries when we lived in London. He was in the aisle she was in, hiding from photographers. She didn't know his name but she recognised he was famous. They glanced at eachother, and he sort of froze as if he'd been recognised. My mum turned and just kept shopping. And much later she saw him in a film. "Oh, yeah!" she said. "That was the guy!"

    Pitt aside, eating in movies is kind of what smoking in movies used to be like. It's an opportunity to subtly act with your body where there's nothing explicitly happening with your character's body.
