Wow this guy nailed it. My charger works perfectly now. Thank you so much. Turned a 100$ purchase into a 30$. Got all the tools and I can repair my cords in the future with leftovers!
Mate, you have saved me 70 quid with this vid. Thank you so much for posting, works a treat. My problem was up at the connector end (crunches when twisted) but a simple eBay purchase for just the connector cable worked a treat!
BALLS! Party of two! This is an very excellent demonstration and exceedingly good and needed advice. You've done a social good, pal. Applause for M Helmer.
Thanks! Just did this and it worked without issues right away... I didn't do soldering. Just twisted wires and taped them up inside the adapter. Thank you again..
Very instructive video. Our home team of three boys were able to use this as our first project with our new Weller D550 solder gun. We finished with a successful green light and a loud "yeah"! The only thing that I would add would be that at 1:57, we didn't see as much spare wire as is shown in the video. In fact, it was so little that we wouldn't have been able to strip the wires. We were able to give the wires a bit of a tug and break the glue bead that is holding the green toroid underneath. Once we freed up that component, we were able to complete the repair. Thanks again.
Excellent tutorial. I am on my way to Radio Shack to pick up a soldering tool and try this out myself. I've never used a soldering iron. Any tips specific to this project? What type gauge wire should I get?
White and Black wires were 1/8" heat shrink, Power cord was 7/32" It was my first time soldering and my wires ended up too thick so be careful there. It was a pain in the a$$ to open up the adapter, but eventually got it open. Used Rosin Core Solder. Borrow the solder from a friend. Total investment, $5.48 from an AutoZone and about 20 minutes of my time. Great video!
Amazing!! Thank you. Definitely worth the risk since the charger is trash when the cord rips anyways. I got away with using a lot of electric tape since I didn't have heat shrink tubes. Soldering is important don't skip that. I wrapped the charger in electric tape to close the housing back up. Easy fix, took 5 minutes tops! :) Used a lighter instead of soldering iron too :P
Thank you so much for this video. My charger is now up and working! By the way, I thought of not throwing away the tube that connects to the brick and separates the positive and negative wires to somehow retain its originality (and neatness). So I just get rid of those old wires then put back the tube and inserted the newly stripped wires then put back the cover and it's done!
Thanks for the instructions. Made a little adjustment to it, took the rubber thing that mounts the cable to the adapter. Drilled it out and stuck the wire throug and superglued the wire inside of it. Looks like new and works like a charm. Thank you!
it worked with me without dismantling it, i used a knife to remove the plastic right outside the adapter and i connected whatever is left of the wires there. Just make sure that both wires don't touch,(what's in the insulation is 1 wire, whats just copper is another wire) or else you will fry the whole thing.
FYI you can use the old rubber restraint, pull wires out first, then use an awl to seperate old cord sheathing from rubber restraint it is heat bonded usually, twist and pull old rubber tube piece out, then put a little bit of clean water on end of newly cut off cord, water will help cord pass through old rubber restraint, you want clean water because your going to glue this later ! Don't splice and cut your cables until after the wire is pulled through, after wire sizes and lengths are correct, clean all parts with alcolhol and use crazy glue or rubber cement and slide cord backwards into restraint and let dry completely depending on your cement type, then put back together. P.S. its much safer to solder the wires exactly where the old wires are on the circuit board, splicing is not recomended !!
Thank you for the info, I was relieved to see it was only two wires being the connector has 5 prongs. I repaired the 85w Mag Safe 2, it was not necessary for me to break apart the casing. I just carefully stripped back the wires with a razor knife. I re soldered the shielding cable and it was back to work. A bit of solder and electrical tape got the job done.
Thanx a million. It was a simple yet great instruction. I did something extra. I have reused the little white rubber that supports and is around the cable. I have drilled it with a very slow drill, and put the cable through it. It came great. Thanks
My 13" MacBook Pro had been on its way out with an intermittent power supply problem for 2 or 3 days not charging. Not completely broken. If the cable was held in a straight position it worked fine. So I have used a matching internal diameter size, 2cm to 3cm length Rawl Plug as a kind of "splint". With a stanley knife I slit the plug down the side and then clipped it over the connection bit and part down the wire as a sheath. Then bound it very tightly using three thin cable ties. It works a treat, splinting the weak area. If you want to know more please respond. Thanks for your vid and the ideas!
Thanks for this video, Mike...saved me $79+tax!!! As some of the posters stated, I drilled out the white rubber grommet & slid the cable through it. I left about a 1/4" of shrink tube exposed on the outside.
+Guilherme Vieira The outer fraying stuff needs to be connected and isolated from the inner core. There are effectively 2 wires, the fraying stuff is one, the inner core the other. You have to turn the fraying stuff into a wire by twirling it and then popping some isolation around it, heat shrink in this case. otherwise you could always try to solder the fraying stuff in place as it stands. Good luck with that.
I was able to use a similar method to what you described when repairing a DENAQ Magsafe (third party piece). I just twisted the wires and covered them with duck tape and used zip ties and duck tape to seal the case for lack of the cool equipment. Pretty ugly but it WORKS! Thank you so much!
I have a question instead of breaking the tabs and the cube itself what is the easyer way cause I want to add a connector instead running threw wires so when the wire snapped in half I can easly replace it
wow thx, i searched a "fair trade" replacement in the internet for some days.. but there is only original expensive stuff or battery destroying trash. i have exactly this kind of damge and now i can fix it by my self.. thx a lot for this video!
how do you open the adapter? I am having a hard time opening it. Is there a neat trick to open this? (My MAC is the new retina with display if that has any difference)
Thanks. I have replaced about 3 or 4 cords the first was the original. The 2nd and 3rd from eBay. The fourth I still have and it is OEM. The problem has never been that end but the end that attaches that magnetic clip attaches to unit. Any ideas?
Seems difficult to open the power adapter box, but it's possible as you show here, I have to do the same but i'm worried about destroying the whole thing... also, couldn't you save the rubber holding piece to hold the cables after soldering? Thanks for the video
Thanks for sharing the hack. Unfortunately it didn't work for me, though... One thing that I think you can do to improve your video is to mention how fragile the black wire coming out of the charger is (at 2:00, "get rid of that thing"). It broke when I tried to peel off the rubber from that black wire and now I can't weld it back in place.
Question: what can I use instead of shrink tubes? I live in a small village and I can't find any anywhere :( is insulation tape good by any chance? Pretty sure it's not but thought id ask anyways Thanks if you can help! This video is great, I hope I can figure it out
That plastic thing at 1:49... Is it just to hold the wires in place? it doesn't have anything to do with the electricity flow or something? I wouldn't want to fry my battery just for getting rid of that thing...
Michael Helmer hahaha , but you forget the white rubber you can just return it to make it better looking and safe but you are skilled electrician so its okey you know what are you doing perhaps thanks for the Vid
+Michael Helmer so why when i get off the insolation there is that metal fraying stuff and then another wire underneath it. what is that wire that the metal surrounds
I'm gong to buy a solder gun so I can fix mine. What is the minimum wattage you recommend for a solder gun? Also, what kind of solder did you use? Thanks. Great vid.
This worked for mine but after a few months my charger ended up overflowing the energy to my laptop and it got burnt. I'm lucky that it didn't affect the logic board, when I went to the apple store they said that there's something I touched inside the charger and it really isn't ideal to open it.
yeehaw lol thanks, michael. seemed straightforward but needed some confirmation... the other videos get way too complicated, trying to preserve the casing so as not to void the warranty, but if the warranty was good why wouldn't they just have it replaced?
They have a replacement part through Amazon that fits in the end. You have to take out the end part and it has negative and positive already to go in somewhere.
It always breaks at the same spot, where it also gets pretty hot. I bought 3 new ones in only 2 years. And now again, altough I'm really careful! I will try this now...thanks!
Thanks for the video. It's always nice to verify how to disassemble a unit before doing it yourself. Saved my lil bro ~$80 by simply cutting off the 3-4" of cable closest to the hard case housing.. and re-soldering it. Just fyi for anyone else doing this. Slip off the boot (the strain relief part in the hardcase) and re-use it. A lot of times, mfg silicone or glue this in place.. it seems Apple did not, which is awesome.. as you can re-use it. It makes the repaired product look good as new, except for a few inches shorter. :) Just be sure to slide it back on the wire before re-soldering the cable into the housing.
Thank you so much for this guide. I did not want to give up my 2012 macbook pro. I am amazed that it still works well (After a change of SSD hard drive and memory increase). Wished the new laptops had the same capabilities. My charger looks bad as well but it works so I am happy with that.
Worked perfect, thank you for the help! Didn't have a soldering tool, but it works just as well as long as I don't pull too hard on them. I did use a bit more heat shrink just for safety.
Thanks for your help, i did this and its working great. And to speed up the process I ghetto rigged it even a little more. I didn't have flat pliers to get into the casing, so I just used the soddering gun to melt that rubber stub so I had wire showing on both sides of the weak point, then I just sodderred the outside wire back together and taped it (or you could insert a new wire here and sodder both ends). No cutting involved.
Wow! I can't believe I was able to get it to work. I have tried to solder things before and it just didn't go well. This actually worked. Should I be worried about any issues like sending too much power to my macbook and ruining the battery or anything? Thank you for the video!
Michael Helmer I agree that soldering would be better but most of us dont have a soldering iron and if we bought one, it would be almost the same as buying another power adapter from craigslist.

Wow this guy nailed it. My charger works perfectly now. Thank you so much. Turned a 100$ purchase into a 30$. Got all the tools and I can repair my cords in the future with leftovers!
I'm a minivan driving mother of 4 from South Jersey, and I was able to fix my adapter following this video. Great job!
You save my life, I was going to have my exam on my school Mac soon in 7 hours and then I stubble upon this. Thank you good lord, thank you.
Mate, you have saved me 70 quid with this vid. Thank you so much for posting, works a treat. My problem was up at the connector end (crunches when twisted) but a simple eBay purchase for just the connector cable worked a treat!

Mark Ramdarass just keep it away from your balls sack
Thanks so much man!!!! I fixed my charger and now my dad doesn't have to take money away from my savings account for a new charger! Thanks again!

Was it due to rolling it around those 2 hinges which stick out?
Amazing!! Thank you. Definitely worth the risk since the charger is trash when the cord rips anyways.

Excellent Video. Thanks!!

You're using the wire stripper the wrong way around, that's why you have to use so much force.
Nice simple to follow walkthrough. Thank you for posting.... good music too!

Just done this and i don’t have much experience in wiring stuff and that feeling when it works haha thank you so much for this video!
Thanks for this video, Mike...saved me $79+tax!!! As some of the posters stated, I drilled out the white rubber grommet & slid the cable through it. I left about a 1/4" of shrink tube exposed on the outside.
I used electrical tape for mine, will that work?
How would you do it if the damage was at the opposite end of the charger?
Hi, I'm having problems opening the box with the pliers. Any tips? :l
so why when i get off the insolation there is that metal fraying stuff and then another wire underneath it. what is that wire that the metal surrounds
i dont know either... can someone answer it
+Guilherme Vieira The outer fraying stuff needs to be connected and isolated from the inner core. There are effectively 2 wires, the fraying stuff is one, the inner core the other. so could basically the same principal be applied to the opposite end? mine came apart a couple inches before it gets connected to the computer
how do you open the adapter? I am having a hard time opening it. Is there a neat trick to open this? (My MAC is the new retina with display if that has any difference)
Thanks so much!!! Just did it... You just saved me 90 euros.
does it matter what type of solder you need? A lead free... or anything in particular?
Thanks. I have replaced about 3 or 4 cords the first was the original. The 2nd and 3rd from eBay. The fourth I still have and it is OEM. The problem has never been that end but the end that attaches that magnetic clip attaches to unit. Any ideas?

the problem with these types of videos is that it assumes you have something like a soldering iron
Why are you watching this if you don't have one? Have you ever fixed anything?
+Doge Wofe I'm watching it because my MacBook charger is broken...why else would I? Idiot
+L3M0NZ You call me an idiot? you can't even fix a computer charger with the tutorial in front of you
+Doge Wofe because I don't currently own a soldering iron
was thinking the same thing

+Mikee Holl Martz No if you do what this guy did your battery is safe
Grant wild thanks. :)
Thanks from Hungary! I followed your tutorial, and repaired my charger.
Thanks for the knowledge man. I fixed a friend's charger thanks to your video.
thank you from indonesia, saved S$108, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
you´re welcome! need to go to indonesia again soon, miss it ;-)
Michael Helmer hahaha , but you forget the white rubber you can just return it to make it better looking and safe but you are skilled electrician so its okey you know what are you doing perhaps thanks for the Vid
+Michael Helmer so why when i get off the insolation there is that metal fraying stuff and then another wire underneath it. what is that wire that the metal surrounds
Thanks you so much Michael. I was able to fix up my macbook supply for nothing (since I've had all of the tools and solder
lying around).
Dude you just saved my life, i had the exact same problem, followed your video and it works now! thanks
I'm gong to buy a solder gun so I can fix mine. What is the minimum wattage you recommend for a solder gun? Also, what kind of solder did you use?
Thanks. Great vid.
No words and straight to the point. Thank you. Keep up the good work.
What do you do if you break the black wire coming out of the charger
Thank you so much!!! Now I can turn in my essays! You are a life saver! Keep up the great work :)
This worked for mine but after a few months my charger ended up overflowing the energy to my laptop and it got burnt. I'm lucky that it didn't affect the logic board, when I went to the apple store they said that there's something I touched inside the charger and it really isn't ideal to open it.

my black and white cables from inside the box were a bit shorter than yours but it still works. Thanks for saving my school mac charger
I'll have to try this. Song name?
can I crimp instead of soldering?
You could have used sugru to put the chords back together and it would probably be more stable then the glue and tube. Thanks! Helped so much!
Oh if only all instructional videos were like this - and no kid yammering either. Thanks!
How incredible it is to see how magnificent humans can be! Thank you so much for offering us this saving guide. Thank you!
Thanks Michael, will give it a go. If I wreck it so be it, Apple have enough of my cash as it is. Thanks for taking the time to put this out there.
This definetly works !! didnt have any shrink plastic so i used electrical tape for the time being, total life saver!!
Thanks for the video. It's always nice to verify how to disassemble a unit before doing it yourself.
Saved my lil bro ~$80 by simply cutting off the 3-4" of cable closest to the hard case housing.. and re-soldering it.

Thank you Michael!! Saved me R550 - R1'300!!!
Thank you! A trip to harbor freight, this video, and 10 mins fixed mine!
more words please.....like what wires a re you seperating into two
i assume black goes with black in the adapter, and white with white
Worked perfect, thank you for the help! Didn't have a soldering tool, but it works just as well as long as I don't pull too hard on them. I did use a bit more heat shrink just for safety.
Thank you so much, apple need to fix this, second one I've broke, this time I am gonna repair it thanks to you...
I broke 3, sick of buying them
Aesthetic piece of work there. Amazing work. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks a lot! I saved lots of money because of you. It wasn't even hard and I found it very interesting. Lots and lots of thanks!
This worked really well! A must-try before buying a new charger!
THANK YOU FOR FIXING MY CHARGER! Clear, concise, easy-to-follow video!! Keep up the good work! And thanks again... :-)
Wow! I can't believe I was able to get it to work. I have tried to solder things before and it just didn't go well. This actually worked. Should I be worried about any issues like sending too much power to my macbook and ruining the battery or anything? Thank you for the video!
My charger seems to be working fine. My MacBook air won't turn on. When I plug the charger the light is green. What do I do?
Hey man thanks for this, you've saved me from wasting cash on the new one. Where do I send the beer money?
none required, thx! Glad I could help!
do you have to solder or can you just twist together?
twisting together will not last very long, so I would recommend soldering. it´s not a big deal, just give it a try.
Michael Helmer I agree that soldering would be better but most of us dont have a soldering iron and if we bought one, it would be almost the same as buying another power adapter from craigslist.
AwestaKhalid Everyone should have a soldering iron in their toolbox, its incredible handy!
Thank you so much Michael Helmer!! You help me a lot!
Just did this but with only electrical tape to work with. Works perfect now thanks!
You can actually reuse the white rubbery bit that originally sticks out of the brick. I just replaced my cable today. It doesn't look pretty but it looks way better than in the video. Just cut of the part that splits the wires and pul the newly cut wire through it. It doesn't serve it's function but it looks like it should :P
can you not use ducktape to cover it instead of shrink tube?
if you wrap it nicely, it might work but shrinktube might be a better choice. If you use Ducktape, you could also use some regular glue to seal it additionally.
thanks
Michael Helmer I used super glue on my current charger cable and it broke even faster than the last one.
I used a combination of duct tape and electrical tape on my last charger cable.
I use electrical tape but it heats up quickly and I'm afraid that It'll catch fire.
thanks who ever you are ,i fixed my adapter and save some money
I did these steps and my charger was working for a while the I needed to re tape it then it stopped working. I soldered it again seeing that some of the black wires were fraying off and it doesn't work any comments will help! Thanks so much! :D
Knowing me I'd burn my house down trying to save 100 bucks
lol me too
This. xD! You and I and Homer Simpson on the loose.
Same. Like I aint spending 100 bucks, thats so stingy!
Thanks for this. Worked like a charm!
melt plastic from a biro to seal and bind if you dont have solder
bought one macbook 2013 right now my second cable stopped working. I probably have to buy a third one or find someone that can do that.
THANKS A LOT!!! I had the same problem as you... without warranty.
i would do, if the ligth is green, put don´t orange ???
I feel like I've just performed heart surgery! Thanks!
Hey, I also tried to repair my power supply, but when I want to use the repaired power supply, I get the message on my mac: "battery maintenance required"
Anyone know the size of shrink tubing i would need.
Thank you So much for sharing the video!!
It feels amazing to have repaired the charger, and saved Rs. 6,500/-
thank you very much! here in my country a charger costs too much to buy a new one.
awesome video, took me 5 minutes to fix my charger
ZOMG thank you!!! this saved me 6000 INR!! I successfully got the old charger to work wooohooo!!
What do I do if the charger is heating up while charging my MacBook Air
Give your computer a break it may overheat and bust the motherboard.
