The issue with this is that valve need to make driver for every single hardware in existence, generic driver might make things works but wouldn't be a guarantee for stable and good performance
@Fewtariusis it specific handhelds only or does it support full desktop parts? If it's support a lot of modern CPU, GPU, network drivers, basic peripheral support for mouse keyboard and controllers then it's great. Though I don't think valve would open SteamOS immediately to desktop hardware, I can see them working with OEM who make handhelds but opening up to DIY desktop users might take a while. I don't think they want to spend too much resource on maintaining SteamOS for desktop
@@NerdNest 1/4 I don't think a Steam Machine is going to work. They'll need to redesign the Steam Controller and somehow juggle this with their other hardware divisions. It's a bit much.
@@NerdNest 2/4 Adding on top, I don't think we will be getting a Steam Box. The Xbox Series X has not been doing too well, just to give some perspective. Valve would be on the backfoot. For it to work, they would need to be competitive with the XSX Performance and at a similar price. And Valve must re-design and introduce their SteamPad. All the while they juggle their current tablet/console with multiple variants (LCD/OLED). I think it is doable, but I don't think it would be too wise. Most of Valve's audience already has a console: their PC. The SteamDeck meanwhile is something their audience doesn't have. Maybe if Valve thinks they can grow their audience by taking away from those upgrading from PS4/XB1 consoles. Maybe. But that is potentially a high risk, low reward scenario.
@@NerdNest I actually a better idea. Instead of a full-blown Steam Machine what Valve should instead release is an eGPU and just call it the Steam Box. You should be able to (dock?) it to your SteamDeck to get better performance on your TV. Or connect it to any of those NUC/Mini PCs and get decent performance out of it like a XSX. Maybe even just get your Windows Laptops hooked to it, opening your less than capable laptop to a world of Steam. If Valve can sell it at a set performance (eg RX-6800XT level) but at fair USD $400 price. That will do it. Hence achieving it by using the most value for money/new tech on mass production, they could squeeze out a slim $100 profit margin. Overall they might have a winner as it would elevate their audience and attract new members to Steam. AMD would be able to afford a bit of hit on their profit margins, as it would be something to help expand their business. This is basically a mass produced eGPU and a first for the market (all others have been small scale and overpriced). ASUS has been able to pull it off with the ROG Ally and the XG-Mobile Dock (RTX 4080). Basically asking for a Valve twist on this (higher value, lower price, lower performance, more units manufactured).

I think Valve should make 3 tiers for the Steam Machine, a cheap $400 basic 1080p box, a mid-range $600-700 1440p box and an "Elite" $1000 4k gaming box. Valve underestimated how many people bought the highest priced Steam Deck and I think a lot of people would want the best graphics they can get on their TV's.
I desperately want a Steam console. I've been building PCs for 20 years and I'm over it. Windows has become too adversarial and I'm tired of keeping up with hardware. I want the ease of use of a gaming console, but with the ability to enter a proper desktop environment to do PC stuff. The Steam Deck with separate gaming mode and desktop mode has been perfect. It just needs more power so it can drive higher resolutions. A console-like device with a new Steam Controller and proper support from Valve is ideal. I think the technology is actually there for a Steam Machine this time around.
Great episode. As a dad of two PC gamers (14 and 12), one of the main factors in me favouring Steam as a platform is the family sharing. Absolute immense feature which doesn't get enough praise. Allowing me to share my legacy library with my kids and borrow "new" titles from them is an absolute game changer.
@@HunterAnsorge-ok9jkIt's much better than it used to be. It used to restrict your entire game library of any one of your games was being played. If someone was playing one of your games and you decided to play something else, it would kick them out of the game. Now that limit is completely gone for the people within your Steam family.
@@HunterAnsorge-ok9jk It's changed dramatically recently. Previously you were not able to share multiple games out of the same library at the same time which was a major, major downside (I couldn't play online with a game in my library if my son was also sharing a game)
They just need to build on the steamdeck and keep it versatile like a suped up switch. I play mine both in handheld and docked to my 43inch 4k tv. I’d like for a SD2 to upscale better to tv and maybe come out with a fresh controller that works flawlessly with it and can wake it up, but otherwise it’s got everything I want.
This guy gets it. I can dock my Steamdeck at any time, and it becomes "a Stream Machine" while later undocked to play anywhere like a Switch. Hybrid devices are where it's at imo. When Valve makes the Steamdeck 2, I'll be there day one to grab at any price they set since expectation is it should release at a reasonable price. If they release a Steam Machine, I'll pay $0 for it. I'm a working dad, with one tv in the house used primarily for enjoying movies and shows with my family - I really do not have time to sit down and take that time away from my family or staying up late at night is practically a no (many of us have work schedules of 5:30am to 5:30pm). My PS5 sat collecting dust because of my busy work schedule and family time. If it wasn't for the Steamdeck, I would have just abandoned gaming period. Being able to play games while still watching stuff with the family or play a little in bed before I have to konk out and go back to the grind has been a godsend. I even bring my Steamdeck to work sometimes to play during breaks - something a Steam Machine could never do.
Why a single console? They could have a base model for indies, less demanding new games and emulation. A pro model for modern games and a MAX model for high end/max settings in your games. That way you can choose the console according to your needs. This would help pricing too.
They wouldn't do this, because now devs need to target three different hardware configurations. Same reason Valve isn't eager to upgrade the Deck every two year years. It makes it easier for devs to focus on one hardware
I want a Steam Controller 2 (Like two sides of the Deck), an Alienware Steam Machine/Dreamcast sized custom SFF PC design, and the added gimmick of it hosting 2 or more gaming instances across a home network or multiple displays simultaneously, with the performance floor dropping to be in the ballpark of what we get on Steam Deck, and the process of jumping in and out of it being idiot proof. I'd buy that for a dollar.
I would probably buy a steam Machine if it were $700 to $1300. I would like to see it have variants. One with just an APU as cheap Model, One with a custum 7700XT/6700XT GPU and Top Tier either having a 7800/6800XT or a lower model 7900/6950XT GPU. Also I think the "Base" Model should come with a 16 Pin PCIe Slot so the User can upgrade it if they want.
@bison08-t6e the first one still holds up I had tons of fun revisiting it before jumping into space marine 2. When ever you get a chance to pick it up hope you enjoy it. For glory my fellow battle brother
Great to see the love you guys gave to Astro Bot. That game made me feel like a child again, fun for the sake of fun. I really hope it is successful so we get sequels and more platformers from Sony. It would be awesome too if this game won GOTY at the end of the year.
Since i have paid 699 for a phone i would pay for a console. Especialy from valve after seeing what they did with steam deck it would probably be a flawless handheld
@bison08-t6e very true! For the last 7 years i have had the same phone. I mean what the heck to we need more advanced phones for? Phone calls back in the day was enough now we are so dependent of them is actually scary! So yes. Consoles first! At least i get alot more enjoyment out of them
@bison08-t6e the difference with phones is that people pay it over time so they don't actually shell out $1k for it from the getgo. When they upgrade their phones they get entered into a new contract that charges them interest on the phone if they can walk out with it for "free" or with a deposit of $50 or so. People aren't thinking about the higher cost down the road, they're thinking they just paid $50 for a $1k phone and have convinced themselves that they just got a "deal."... If valve were to follow the phone business model and put all buyers in a contract to only buy from their storefront if they were allowed to walk out with a steam deck 2 for $100 then they could effectively get over a million customers in the 1st week alone.
@@Archate not sure why my comment got deleted but I basically explained why it's different for phones because people aren't paying $1k right from the ghetto for a phone. They buy it over time with a new phone contract even if it ends up costing them more with interest. So they end up either getting the phone for free or at a much lower cost when they go in to upgrade... If valve did the same thing with a console and lock in consumers to a contract to only buy from their store then a valve console could cost people $100 or so to take home.
@bison08-t6eI feel like a large part of this issue is you are able to add the price of your phone over the next 2 years to your carrier where you need to spend the $700 up front to get a console
I want a Steam Board. Imagine a gaming keyboard with Steam OS on it and a battery in it. - If you connected it to your PC you could run Steam OS in a window inside your PC's normal OS and also use the Steam Board as a Key Board at the same time - Wire directly to a Monitor to run directly from the Steam Board. - Play wirelessly with Steam Link on any supported device. - Buy an optional super optimized Steam link HDMI dongle dongle with super low latancy to have the best wireless experience.
surprised nobody talked about the "dot" somewhere at the middle to the right of the screen...you will notice it when you switch from non-full screen to full screen of the video. thought there was a dust speck on my monitor till I realised it wasn't :)
To answer the thumbnail question: It would depend on the hardware and performance I wouldn't pay more than what I would pay for building it myself. But I do need a steam controller that is the full width of the steam deck but without the screens hardware but instead maybe some touch input similar to a screenless graphics tablet to use on my PC!
Just got an ROG Ally X. The performance is just perfect for me, I can play all games without worrying the lack of power. I don't think il jump back to my PS5 anytime soon or any console. I may even consider buying an EGPU in a few years should future games demand more power.
@@DManLewis1 Yep and I predict a game like GTA VI will be too much for the current generation of ROG Ally & Steam Deck. The eGPU may help but hard telling if the CPU will be a huge bottleneck.
PSA for Netflix Games, if you play around with Steam Input on Steam Deck, you can get some of them in a playable state with a Browser Shortcut on Steam UI mode.
Instead of making a steam console, make the deck more like a switch, with easier plug and play controller use when it’s in docked mode. You could even include an external graphics chip in the dock to give it a little more power when docked, and turn up the power draw. I think this would sell extremely well especially if the sold a bundle and the dock as a separate accessory for people who already have a steam deck.
I will go all-in on the first handheld that supports a full desktop eGPU as plug & play feature! The higher power when 'docked' is the main reason I went with a Legion Go instead of a Steam Deck.
One way to get around scalpers is to sell them in stores first instead of online. This is what I think they should do. Make everyone line up to get them. Then in a couple of months start selling them online. It's going to be such a pain to get a Switch 2 since they sell them online first. Or they could email their customers and give us first dibs on purchase rights.
If it’s $700 but stronger than a PS5 Pro so I can then stream it to my OLEDeck, that could be tempting. But even more so, I’m astounded that you had your ceiling fan whirling hard, Bill, and yet I could not hear that at all from your mic! That’s some serious noise cancellation!
Also if you watch the FF7 Advent Children movie, the recent games are inspired by it, and may help provide background and how they’re going about the story telling.
Right now I'm playing Deadpool on my Steam Deck, runs at a flawless 60fps at 1080p on the TV, after that I'm planning on playing more games from the 2010-2016 era on the Deck, just seems perfect for it
What people keep forgetting, or don't seem to realize when talking about Valve releasing a Steam Machine is, you cannot sell a commodity below market value. That's a hard rule of market economics. If they want to subsidize the hardware they have to make it not a commodity, i.e. lock it down like a console. And I don't think they're going to do that. For one it's going to be a lot of work, but more importantly, they don't have to. People are more than happy to buy a PC to run Steam, and other hardware manufacturers are more than happy to compete with each other to keep PC hardware prices down. What Valve needs to release isn't a new Steam Machine, but SteamOS. That alone is what's needed to get more people to play on PCs.
valve subsidized steam deck and that work so i dont c that they cant subsidize the steam machine too if they make it. i agree they need to release the steamOS. but i believe valve is focusing now on the steamOS release then afterward they will release the steam machine once everything is done wit the steamOS. its jst a matter of time for the steam machine to come
@@haocongkevinzhu1451 The Steam Deck actually isn't good value outside of being a handheld gaming PC. The addition of the screen and controllers increases the value to gamers, but actually makes it worse for most non-gaming tasks while increasing the cost. There are a few exceptions though, and you see Steam Decks being used to control animatronics at Disney and fly drones in Ukraine. That's the type of issue you get if you subsidize an STB; there are way too many "off-label" uses for just a computer in a box.
I’m mostly a console gamer all my life, but if they’re going to go digital soon anyway, I want a machine that plays everything. A hybrid from Steam is what I’m hoping for, especially after playing on the Deck.
I haven't played Rebirth (waiting till Steam...), but from what I understood of Remake's ending, there's some reality blending after the "destiny" boss is beaten. Zack from the OG timeline survives instead of dying and gets transported into the new reality.
I might have missed whether it was mentioned or not, but UFO 50 is "unknown" for deck. At 5 bucks, I'd risk it. At 25 bucks I want to know. So were you guys playing it on Steam Deck, or Windows?
I think with the poor reception of the PS5 Pro a console priced much cheaper is gonna move units from consumer sentiment alone. Honestly taking the custom APU in the Steam Deck and just putting it into a small box with an even more aggressive cooler so it can clock higher would be a shout in my opinion.
The biggest thing people complained about for the PS5 Pro was the price. $700 is a video card for high end gaming. Just the video card. But, $700 for the whole console is absurd? And virtually anyone who gets it already has the original PS5 to sell (I think Gamestop was buying them for like $300-400). If you spent $700 on a computer today ... for how many years do you think you'd be running the latest and greatest games at the highest graphics settings? Would you even be able to do it with that $700 computer on day 1? The biggest problems with the PS5 Pro would be: * it's releasing halfway through the life cycle of this generation of consoles. So, instead of it being good for 8+ years it's likely only good for 4-6 years. * there are few games at the release of the platform that take full advantage of what it can do.
@@zero11010 yeah and trust me, I'm a PC gamer first and foremost. I have my own rig built over the years to be a beast... I understand that the PS5 and by extension the Pro are fairly unbeatable in the bang for buck department. You gotta remember who you're talking to in these comments. We're all nerds here. Power users. Hell I don't even use Windows at all. Most consumers just see sticker prices and what they can play on it. If undercutting the PS5 price by a good margin is possible, you should, it'll compel the average consumer that just wants to buy the latest thing to play games on. Just make a more powerful Steam Deck in a console form factor price a hundred bucks or less than any other console out there and you're gonna make money. In my opinion at least.
@1:38:46 Don't you just love when Kerry starts talking about PC parts and specs like he is a damn robot talking in a different language 🤣 That time stamp is just when I thought about this, he definitely does it even crazier in other videos haha
The steam console would have to be more powerful than the steam deck. I would love to see one made. Steam deck got me into Linux because the community finally had the same device and were able to help others out with awesome videos that helped me navigate Linux.
Same here. Was my first time using a Linux distro in like 10 years and it blew my mind how far it progressed. Steam Deck was also my first handheld gaming PC after wanting to get one for the prior 3-5 years but none were affordable until Steam Deck came along. I was very quick to do that $5 reservation. I bought a Z1E ROG Ally 1 year later, which I do enjoy, but I definitely also miss SteamOS & intend to put Bazzite on it eventually.
If the box was made with current Deck hardware, 199.99 - 249.99. In this case we're removing the battery, screen and gaming buttons only adding HDMI and a few USB-A ports which could be added to the package via internal USB hub. I would be all over current Deck LCD hardware in a box.
I'd love a Steam console, especially if they made a new controller. If we never get that, I'm already looking forward to the docked experience on the next Deck. I honestly enjoy the current docked experience quite a bit, so I guess I'm kinda down for whatever they do. SteamOS for PC? Excellent. Steam console? Excellent. Steam Deck 2? Show me that preorder button. With the Steam Deck, Valve has made me stop hating PC gaming and actually enjoy it in a very short time. I was a console gamer since gen 1 (pong), really got into it in gen 2 (Magnavox Odyssey2. I see you, Cary 👊), was first in line in my town for an original Playstation, took a road trip for a Playstation 2, and I almost always found a way to get every console of a generation. I actually have skipped this console generation entirely (unless you count Switch) and have not cared for a second. I'm still interested in what Nintendo does next (I am doing my best to separate the video game company from the brutally litigious corporation in my mind lol), but Valve seems to have stealth-flipped me like they did with Russ. They have at the very least, won my benefit of the doubt for whatever they do next.
As much as it's worth. I have a top tier PC, but I'd still buy it anyway because it's Valve and Steam. I appreciate them not using their monopoly powers to screw consumers, and the way they keep supporting Linux development and not trying to hinder their competition, even though they are in the midst of trying to succeed in a risky and expensive hardware venture (Steam Deck).
I would pay 1K for something extremely powerful that has a CD drive and an SD card slot AND the ability to EASILY Dual Boot windows since we're unfortunately tied to PC
For me a steam machine or even a bazzite machine is an option where i looked at a ps5 and thought no i dont know if buying games on it or subscribing to psn for the handful of games i would play on it would be at all worth it. But having jumped on the steamdeck knowing how good the price was i am now invested to continue on a steam machine and knowing that come what may my games ive bought over the last few years i can carry on playing on whichever pc/steamdeck/steam machine i will have in ten to fifteen years from now. So ive gone wholly from a console psp/vita/ps3 user to a pc user and i dont think ill ever go back.
if they made a steam deck that could use external gpu it would be amazing. the issue is they would likely have to modify linux a bit to make it work but they already made proton just to make it work so i don't think it's too unreasonable to think that they would do something like this.
You don't need to modify Linux to make It work. By default the app will choose the GPU that is connected to the TV. In fact you can try that right now with a Asus ROG ally with bazzite linux or any other handheld with usb4 or oculink.
It would be hard for me to believe that Valve isn't planning to release a new Steam Controller with Deck-like controls to coincide with the release of Steam OS for general use. Remember that the original Steam Controller was designed to be used with Steam Machines. They want to be a presence in the console market. Whether they will actually release their own set top console I'm not sure, but they are at least going to enable other companies to do so.
I think Valve making a Steam console is excellent idea. I would like that. Its like having a screenless steam deck and having much power and be plug it to socket. I hope someday Valve will do something like that.
Even a steam deck box should sell like crazy, coz it is a great, low power emulation device, which still can play PC games. Probably putting the same motherboard in a different case should be the best solution, coz of its one production line.
Limited releases play straight into scalpers hands. Period point blank. At this point that should be understood. Furthermore why not make something cool like this unlimited and just make the first 12k or whatever amount come with something special. Limited editions that exclude most are not customer friendly. Or even take reservations for a limited time so everyone at least has an opportunity. But whatever I don’t need a new ps5, already played demons souls remake and gave mine away.
If the Switch is a console, then I think the Steam Deck should be considered a console. Next gen processors are going to be insane with AI upscalers so I think we're going to see the lines blur between console and handheld until it's basically meaningless. No, the Steam Deck doesn't look as good as the PS5 or my RTX 3090 gaming PC, but I have relatively few complaints with the Steam Deck as it is. I wish AAA games like Yakuza, Horizon looked just a little better when docked, but I only need a little more resolution and 15-20 more fps to be 100% satisfied. I'm pretty sure next gen Steam Deck will tick all these boxes. We already have modern AAA games running on mobile chips, just a little more time is needed and we're 💯
I love you guys! In the end I figure we're all just gamers, we dont want ten diffrent hardware configs to choose between. I wanna be able to play games. Thats it. Please let me pay you for that, then you can have my money. For the games, not the hardware.
To answer the question on the title, I'd pay £500. Beyond that when we start looking at £700 is budget PC money and it makes more sense to build a PC. I'm still to be convinced that I would want a box in the future though, if handheld PCs keep getting more and more powerful then a powerful SteamOS handheld would be the ultimate gaming device. And to me Robbit from Jumping Flash will always be the unofficial PlayStation mascot, none of the others have landed for me. Astrobot will never do it for me as a mascot, I look at Astrobot and I think of a home appliance and not video games.
SteamOS for everyone (handhelds and desktops), Steam Controller 2 (based on SD controls) and a new (real) Steam Machine. It seems to me everything is ready for the big Console/PC (Linux) revolution.
I'd like for them to make a $300-500 console for those who just want an out of the box experience and release SteamOS for those who want to build a higher end gaming PC.
A windows version would be more Expensive than just putting Steam OS on a Base model, because Valve would be making a Modern deal with Microsoft for Windows instead of having the Grandfather super cheap Deal that all the Old PC Manufacturers, like ASUS, have.
$300 I don't think Valve will go set top box. But if they did it would be with SteamDeck 2, same hardware and lower price. I think they should do a SteamDeck no battery.
can it play modern games and work like a steam deck? run discord or desktop mode and be highly portable? 1000$ cad any limits on any of those features? 700$ cad would be my top out price
The bane of Steam hardware has been international availability, unlike Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo, for a winning console-like strategy, they certainly must figure out first their distribution strategy to satisfy the demand, just look how it is still IMPOSSIBLE to get a Steam Deck in LatAm and many other regions, where you can just buy any Sony or Microsoft or Nintendo product. They nailed the electronic games distribution but certainly have a record of falling short when it comes to hardware availability.
While I understand what Phawx is trying to say regarding exp for accessibility, the whole point of accessibility features is to help people for whom gameplay is too difficult. Punishing someone with a disability who uses accessibility as it was intended goes against the very principle of making a game accessible for all. It doesn't matter if others use it to make their gameplay easier as the default is too difficult. The git-good to get exp mentality spits in the face of what accessibility stands for.
Best way to beat scalpers is to NOT buy from them. They'll lose money with inventory sitting around and there will be no motivation to continue. Scalping gone.
I honestly don't see a world where they price it at $599-699 and it competes with with the PS5 Pro unless we're talking about a release that is 2+ years from now and they take a huge loss. Also no matter what price point if they put out a console Sony will stop dealing with them flat out. The Steam Deck gets a pass for them because it's not the same market, they will not play nice if Valve starts coming for their bag. That said I would just love to have a Steam Controller 2 that has the same layout as the Steam Deck.
Valve are not going to make a console for your TV, they wouldn't be able to subsidise the price with the games like the others can so they'd have to sell it at full price at which point you may as well just buy a PC, which most Steam users already have anyway.
My PC is basically a much more expensive and much less reliable video game console that also takes more space. Everything I do on a computer that matters happens on a Mac. I’m a software engineer doing web and app development. Virtually all of the work happens on Mac (basically every company in Silicon Valley hands you a MacBook Pro on day one). So, my real computer is my personal MacBook Pro. My PC is just a much more expensive and WAY less reliable gaming console. Want to guess how much more frequently my PC crashes than any Xbox, Nintendo, PlayStation, or any other console I’ve ever had? Want to guess how often I’ve had hardware failures on consoles over the last 30+ years of owning consoles? Want to guess how many times I’ve had hardware failures on a PC in that time? Want to guess how many problems I’ve had with drivers being out of date on PC vs console? How about how many times where you think to yourself … maybe I’ll just start over and reinstall the OS? Want to know how much effort goes into virus protection on a console? Want to know how much cheating happens in multiplayer on console (I’ll give you a hint, it only comes from crossplay PC players). Buy a console when it comes out and it’s generally a match for PC gaming at that time and less expensive. And, it’ll last roughly 10 years until the next generation comes out. You may have a PC last that long but you won’t do meaningful gaming on it at high graphics settings after a few years unless you’re replacing hardware.
There's so much to be said for PC gaming but everything you bring up about the convenience and reliability of consoles is often left out of the discussion, and is a super important consideration. I bought an Xbox Series X at launch because Xbox has traditionally been the closest thing to PC gaming you can get with a console, and I've been extremely happy outside of titles showing up late or not at all (FF VII Remake). The versatility and open-nature of PC (game availability, DIY launchers, emulation, etc.) always brings me back to it though, and I really hope that Valve or MS can find the right balance of openness and convenience that everyone seems be looking for.
That's some high tier cope. Almost everything you said can be proven false or heavily debated. Also everything than can be done on your MacBook could be done easier and faster on a good PC. But lets get into your points. "My PC crashes more than consoles" Then you have an issue with your PC that you aren't fixing, a software or hardware error. I haven't had a single PC crash in over a year and I use my PC for work and gaming a minimum of 12 hours a day. "Hardware errors on console are more rare than PC" Xbox Red Ring of Death begs to differ, PS3 Blue Ring of Death begs to differ, poor cooling in the PS4 begs to differ, stick drift on the Switch begs to differ. Hardware errors are at best more common on console and at worst equivalent to PCs. "My drivers are out of date" User error, there is ZERO chance you're an actual software engineer if you have issues updating your drivers. "Virus protection on console is easier" Windows Defender is enough to handle ALL virus detection these days, we no longer need extra stuff like AVG or Malwarebytes. "Cheating more common on PC" MAYBE this one is the only one that is close to true, but you would be surprised how easy it is to cheat on console also. "A console when it comes out will be a match for PC gaming and last for 10 years" This is one is just hilarious, since the PS5 Pro was announced that proves you basically wrong, and sure if you're okay with 30fps 1080p gaming for 10 years in the year 2024. But if you want to play games at 60fps that aren't a blurry mess, you get a PC. The 2070 Super came out in 2019 (before PS5) and outperforms the PS5 at release and still does to this day. Everything you say here is false.
I have a theory that Microsoft is prepping to launch full windows on the xbox WITH Steam integration. I know, im crazy, but turning every console they made into an optional PC would be wild. 🤪
I just buy a mini PC called AtomMan G7 PT (I buy the Barebone and add m.2 PCIE 5 and 64 go of Ram DDR5) and install BAZZITE OS on it. If we exclude the Steamdeck, I don't know what would like more than a Steam Console than that. Just missing a Steam controller 2 that look like the Steamdeck with touch pads.
It would have to be in line or at least somewhat close in price and performance to the modern consoles for me to consider a Steam Console. Until then give me steam OS so i can turn any of the spare PCs into steam consoles.
I would pick up a Steam OS box for the living room, I prob could see Valve completing with Sony on price. If they don't totally kill linux support on their new games, "as of right now, you don't need PSN on the deck" they definitely would make you log into PSN or require PSN+ to play it on a Steam Box and in turn Deck. Xbox I doubt cares as long as they are making a sale, I doubt they will be in the closed console market for very long... I really think it will be a hybrid system like the deck.
Sony did try to beat the scalpers with the PS5 eventually, I got mine from an email invite from Sony with a purchase window. Can't see them doing the same with this but you never know.
I'd be willing to spend $1,000 for a dedicated Steam Box as long as it could guarantee 4k / 60fps on any game (including all AAA). Give me that, let me play my Steam library in my living room, and we're good to go.
@@monki_sudo And I don't want to do any of that. I want to just buy a box and plug it in to my TV. I don't want a mouse, keyboard or to build anything. $1,000 was a figure pulled out of the air, what's your price for what I'd be looking for?
Even though there's newer and more powerful handheld game machines im still considering buying a steam deck . There's not that much of a difference in graphics between the deck and newer handhelds and its not worth almost twice the price difference
I would pay nothing for a Steam console, as I only play handheld. I'm in favor of the idea though. Anything that pushes gaming on Linux forward is a good thing.
Sony has, up until now, intentionally been avoiding a Mascot. Its why they never let Jak and Daxter, Kratos or Crash become become their Mascot. Only Reason Master Chief is the Xbox's Mascot is because Microsoft 100% fully Owns Halo.
Steam Console doesn’t need to exist. Now if they want to get into something where they are a new PC manufacturer that bakes Steam into it, ok, people would buy a new, solid PC. The problem comes from who they end up having make the computers and what happens if the QA on it craps the bed because all it would take is a fundamental break there to do some serious damage to the company.
I already bought their console for about 400. I've not played it undocked. So if they removed the screen and, I'd pay $200. But now days its novelty is worn off and im tired of great games with lame graphics (looking at you Vampire Survivor), it wouldn't oat more than $120 now. The pixel art doesn't do it anymore, so give me something that plays Diablo IV at 4k 120 Hz with ai rendered tween frames or upscale, or 60 Hz/fps without AI frames. Give me that for $400 and it'll play modern games of mediocre demand for 4 more years. That's basically my 2020 Asus G14 without keyboard and screen. That is wirth $400. It plays D4 just like I described. Itll do better if it was Linux Steam OS. I have a hard time to spend more because then its smarter to buy more expensive things in my life and i wont let my game only rig cut into the ither budgets. I have good computers, I don't need another. $200-400. If its only able to play 2D games, it's not worth more than a retro emulator to me.
$500 Steam console should run PS5-quality (performance mode) @ 1440p 60fps This should give you enough leeway to play SOME games @ 120fps with lower settings. And also let you see BETTER (than console) graphic quality @ 30-40 fps (user preferences)
I would not pay for a steam console as I already have one my pc. At most I would pay $60-70 for a controller with the same controls as the steam deck. Dpad buttons 2 track pads 4 rear buttons and 2 sticks
I wouldn't put too much stock into Steam accounts since they're free. It doesn't really hold much value as many of those could be bots, cafes, or even piracy related as proven historically.
What I want is steam OS to make my own steam console
same
The issue with this is that valve need to make driver for every single hardware in existence, generic driver might make things works but wouldn't be a guarantee for stable and good performance
They could easily sell Steam Os and i would buy it.
with a steam deck layout with touch pads as aloud games that don't have controller friendly options
I WANT Steam Controller 2!
Please!
@@NerdNest 1/4
I don't think a Steam Machine is going to work. They'll need to redesign the Steam Controller and somehow juggle this with their other hardware divisions. It's a bit much.
@@NerdNest 2/4
Adding on top, I don't think we will be getting a Steam Box.

Or a Steam deck box for 250 basic option with removable storage m.2
3 is to many just compete with PS5 pro and pre built PC with a 799$ machine that blows away the pro.
You can steam share with ANYONE. Been that way for 10 years.
Russ totally said “Resident Evil 7 Remake” then talked about Final Fantasy 7 Remake. 😂
Steam console? It would be great so long as people dont go into it thinking they're going to get a 7800X3D 4090 PC for $500...
Why a single console? They could have a base model for indies, less demanding new games and emulation. A pro model for modern games and a MAX model for high end/max settings in your games. That way you can choose the console according to your needs. This would help pricing too.
I'm sure they expect there to be tiers. Like the steamdeck; entry, mid n premium models
Another excellent show guys, keep up the stellar work advancing the hobby, community forward for us all to enjoy and remain informed; stay RAD all.
Really appreciated the space marine mention. Truly the best game I’ve played in awhile
- If you connected it to your PC you could run Steam OS in a window inside your PC's normal OS and also use the Steam Board as a Key Board at the same time
- Wire directly to a Monitor to run directly from the Steam Board.
To answer the thumbnail question:
It would depend on the hardware and performance I wouldn't pay more than what I would pay for building it myself.
They'll demand more CPU as well, so that can help you make it last longer, but that CPU won't have changed.
@@DManLewis1 Yep and I predict a game like GTA VI will be too much for the current generation of ROG Ally & Steam Deck. The eGPU may help but hard telling if the CPU will be a huge bottleneck.
I am currently playing through Doom + Doom 2 and it is so good.
But man have I been eyeing UFO 50, that game looks beyond sick seriously.
You should look into doom 2 mods next. My fav is Urban Brawl. It totally changed everything about the game
I love this big talks with all the different topics super cool 😎 thank you
best episode so far, good job guys!
@@Berengal 🤦♂️
I’m mostly a console gamer all my life, but if they’re going to go digital soon anyway, I want a machine that plays everything. A hybrid from Steam is what I’m hoping for, especially after playing on the Deck.
I need these podcasts on Spotify!
They're on Spotify, have been since the start.

I suspected today's episode would be packed
The biggest problems with the PS5 Pro would be:
* it's releasing halfway through the life cycle of this generation of consoles.

Don't you just love when Kerry starts talking about PC parts and specs like he is a damn robot talking in a different language 🤣
That time stamp is just when I thought about this, he definitely does it even crazier in other videos haha
The Steam trailer song for Parking Garage Rally has me jamming! 😂😂 So late 90s early 2000s! Simple Plan days. 🤣
If the box was made with current Deck hardware, 199.99 - 249.99. In this case we're removing the battery, screen and gaming buttons only adding HDMI and a few USB-A ports which could be added to the package via internal USB hub. I would be all over current Deck LCD hardware in a box.
I 100% agree with everything The Phawx said in this episode. He basically said everything I wanted to add to the discussions, but more elequently.
I hate when games hide co-op or multiplayer behind campaign stuff. I should be able to meet up with a friend without having to pass a tutorial stage.
I would pay 1K for something extremely powerful that has a CD drive and an SD card slot AND the ability to EASILY Dual Boot windows since we're unfortunately tied to PC
because of collusion, PC does not have full featured blu-ray drives.
@@mercuriete really? Pretty sure it used to not work if you do it while the device is on.
Love the steam deck and would be thrilled with a steam console that compact but performs much better
I think Valve making a Steam console is excellent idea. I would like that. Its like having a screenless steam deck and having much power and be plug it to socket. I hope someday Valve will do something like that.
I would not pay for a Steam console because I don't have a TV. That's why I have a Steam Deck.
Fair point.
Maybe get a TV?
They do the same thing in Skyrim for xp scaling. Go to the greybeards and sneak backstab on Novice versus legendary difficulty.
If FSR catches up to DLSS, I could imagine a 800$ Box offering respectable 4K Quality and Performance, but I do not see it anytime soon.
$300
I don't think Valve will go set top box. But if they did it would be with SteamDeck 2, same hardware and lower price.
I think they should do a SteamDeck no battery.
are the intel and amd cpus for console not just running x86? shouldn’t they both basically be the same?
can it play modern games and work like a steam deck? run discord or desktop mode and be highly portable? 1000$ cad
any limits on any of those features? 700$ cad would be my top out price
Agreed!!
I’d pay $699 for a steam console. The price of a PS5 pro even. Because the value of my entire steam library!?! On a console!?!?! Count me in.
Make it modifiable/upgradable by me, and that's not a bad deal. Of course, many would look into a gaming laptop instead at that $range
@@ThisisCitrus c’mon. Who is coping here?
Spoiler: you. It’s obviously you with the long defensive post I didn’t read. 🤣
If valve makes a console, I would like to be able to run SteamVr as well as standard 2d games.
$1,000 was a figure pulled out of the air, what's your price for what I'd be looking for?
sac boy was a mascot for PS, right?
He has a lot more than 25 bots if he is at universe 3. You need a certain amount of bots to get to each new galaxy.
22:43 Why is it that peeps aren't using frame generation on Wukong- Black Myth? It has the FSR 3.1 I believe.
I will say the steam deck definitely made me buy more steam games that I would have otherwise saved or tried to buy on console instead
Bough rog all x, i would pay up to 1k for handheld but it would have to be perfect in every aspect. Oled 120hz etc etc
They need to make a steam deck 2 lower specs and steam console with play at better specs
Even though there's newer and more powerful handheld game machines im still considering buying a steam deck . There's not that much of a difference in graphics between the deck and newer handhelds and its not worth almost twice the price difference
Resident evil 7 remake? Where can i find that
I would pay nothing for a Steam console, as I only play handheld.
I personally wouldn’t but that’s just me I’m happy with the Xbox and ps5
$500 Steam console should run PS5-quality (performance mode) @ 1440p 60fps
This should give you enough leeway to play SOME games @ 120fps with lower settings.
And also let you see BETTER (than console) graphic quality @ 30-40 fps (user preferences)
I like physical media when it comes to consoles so no I would not
I would build my own - we just need valve to release SteamOS already!
I’m waiting for steamOS to be released for Lenovo legion go
@@monki_sudo do you get better battery life on it by any chance than on windows? Also is the sleep wake function there
Buy a steamdeck and dock it you have the best of both worlds.
If steam made a console id pay up to 1k cause they always have massive sales and no required subscriptions
Nothing, I have a PC lol. Unless the hardware is really good value for the price somehow
I would not pay for a steam console as I already have one my pc. At most I would pay $60-70 for a controller with the same controls as the steam deck. Dpad buttons 2 track pads 4 rear buttons and 2 sticks
Sounds like the noisegate on this video is a bit too strong
There was some background noise I couldn't get rid of
I wouldn't put too much stock into Steam accounts since they're free. It doesn't really hold much value as many of those could be bots, cafes, or even piracy related as proven historically.
Nothing came to Steam to get rid of the consoles. So now Steam is becoming the console.
