I watch all of your channels because of you Philip. I don't play CS anymore and I'm not as much into tech as I used to be, but I still love watching your videos for the person and the commentary.
I have a short list of people who I genuinely respect and take example from in this world, and you're on it. I love your introspection, self-awareness and care for the little things.

I think your channels belong to a "self-expressive art" genre than anything. You put considerable care to arranging the literary, visual and audio aspects of the video that try to catch exactly what you want to express at that moment. They are personal, not in a vlog-sense, but as in entries from a journal, if the two can be compared. I think having the "soundbytes from dad" also gives that vibe.

I've always been confused about the confusion around being a RUclipsr as a job; most people understand how ad revenue works, right... Right?? They understand tv adverts why not online adverts? If i keep straining over it i will halve my life.

    • @NicolaiSyvertsen

People don't really understand TV ads either because they think most people are not influenced by it because hey they don't care about the ads, nobody does right?
But the companies paying to have ads run for weeks on the screen surely must have done the research and know it pays off.

It really shows you put a lot of work there and the personal touch you give to your videos is the cherry on top. Love the content, love the humor. Impostor syndrome sucks, and i think a lot of that appears when you are just having fun at work, and it just doesn't feel like work, and people sometimes don't see it as work because you're not suffering while doing it. You have an degree self reflection I envy. This is not close to the best RUclips channel using traditional metrics, but is my favourite for reasons that are beyond its entertainment value. Your video on the hedonic treadmill is one I have watched and listened to a number of times and reflects my over indulgent, over stimulation life for the past decade or so. The fact that a channel can have deep, introspective videos such as this and how to microwave spaghetti hoops and freezing creme eggs make it's all the better. It's like sieving for gold.

    2) Its your cs content of showing some very small thing like a crack in mirage that you can only see if you go noclip.
    3) Its your music.
    4) Its your way of thinking and approaching things or you can say your takes on something. Like that video about annotations on youtube. It had a direct impact on todays youtube.

I work a business and this is entirely how it feels man, the more brain and time I spend on that the more I am successful, I mostly work 12 hours a day give and take, but I never have a day off; twice a month I get days off and even them I have to spend on chores, give time to people I couldn't for 2 weeks and maybe some left about work. I am going to start my masters in a university far from my home and business soon, hopefully this chance will get me the time I need to spend on my growth and me. Sometimes I wish I was part of an 8 hour 5 day grind just so I can have 2 entire days off! It feels so alluring to not have to think too much after work and spend the rest of the day as I wish, would I be less tired of doing anything after coming home if I was having 2 days free? cuz right now I'm having my day off and there's a lingering anxiety that I'm not making the most of my day off by watching my RUclips backlog XD

Its not that its impossible, more that I feel that even if I met that goal its just a further self created farce of authenticity. I find myself reading philosophy in the meantime, which may or may not be worsening the conditions itself. I have been trying to set myself smaller empirical goals, but with no really actionable worldview I often feel completely disconnected. All this to say, your content is one which gives me strong enjoment and even catharsis, I think for the reasons you laid out here. Even if It does at times feel undefinable and fufillable, I think this larger project is greatly interesting due to its attitude of continuing explorarion and analysis. Especially don't sell yourself short because you don't fully realize what this project is.

I'm definitely the kind of guy doesn't know what I want to do or how to get there.
I've always had an interest in video game development, and it was my initial plan for college. However, I hadn't given it as much thought as to specifically what area I wanted to settle on. And the stress of high school, coupled with the anxiety of becoming a working adult, I ended up not going to college and just working a basic job.
I had some art skill, so I convinced myself I could be a freelance artist, as I felt that would be easier to get into. I dabbled in digital art for quite a while, but then stopped. I picked it back up eventually, but still struggle to be consistent with it.
A few years ago now, I learned how to use the Hammer editor, which once again peaked my interest in video game development. I never finished any meaningful projects, but the environmental design aspect seemed pretty fun once I got the hang of it. And slowly I started learning a bit more about the technical aspect of visual design in video games.
Watching your videos helps fuel that interest, so maybe it'll get me somewhere, someday. Maybe I'll end up being a youtuber as well, as it's another thing I think about a lot. But who knows, I'm basically just winging it right now.

I have couple of old style content-creators in my family like writers, journalists etc, and i feel like all of them relate to your feelings. Its hard to stay in one place for your whole life. At one point you release a book that gets a ton of prizes, and then there are a couple years of stagnation when you only stay afloat running some weird podcast when you tell people what they should read. I thing the unique ability here is the possibility to workout a lot of different scenarios. Your experience is very much valid for all types of content.

I think you can definitely describe yourself as a 'Source Engine' youtuber. I find the way you present all the technical aspects and inner-workings of Valve/Source games really interesting, and that is what mainly made me drawn to your content. As for where that would fit outside of RUclips, I'd say your content is actually pretty similar to how a lot of software/tech research is done. As someone who's in the computer science field, your content definitely has that sense of familiarity I have from watching developer showcases/presentations/tests.

When I started making enough money as an indie developer that I could support my family and my teammates' families last year, this feeling began setting in strongly for me too. It feels like walking on air, you're worried it will collapse at some point in your life and you won't be able to get a job or be relevant to anyone. And even if I don't think about that, I'm constantly worried when I loaf around or am not working at 100% capacity that I'm not spending my time and money wisely. I don't think I've figured out the cure for this feeling of dread yet, but I have observed in other people that it doesn't seem to go away no matter how wealthy or famous you get. So I've begun investing more and more time in my wife and child instead, which is a bet that if things go wrong with my "career" I'll at least have a family that loves and cares about me. I hope your family cares about you Philip, and that we both die happy and free of regrets in the end. Peace.

working a "8 to 5" desk-job, I can say that I share some of your thoughts, like: "would my skills really be useful elsewhere? How much will still be relevant in 5 or 10 years time?"
I'm still optimistic, because while my technical skills will without doubt get outdated, social skills are not, and they seem to gain importance as the time goes by. Experience also brings stuff that are useful in every context like the calm confidence that at the end of the day, everything will be kinda okay, even if things don't go according to plans.
And that is something you acquire no matter the type of job :-)

I relate a lot. It isn't "imposter syndrome" it is more like the realization that you could probably go work at a fast food place and make just as much if not more money, have more free time, and likely an overall happier "normal" life. But we are artists and we are destined to grind the sometimes 20 + hour work days every single day so we can CREATE our works.

I was going to say that your youtube platform is a great - platform - for you to start other projects with these skills you've got. You know what the RUclips algorithm loves? Someone documenting a project they're doing. Especially with other people. 'kliksphilip makes a videogame with friend x and friend y episode 1'. Im sorry to hear 2kliks and this channel arent where you want them to be, but you have a unique position and freedom to scheme and execute whatever exciting - or really boring - projects you want, and we will be here to watch. All the best mate

To be honest, I think I'm kind of lost in my life in a similar way as well. I'm one year away from getting a magisters degree in computer science, but no matter how many times I try, I still haven't been able to land a job anywhere in that field and I've been really losing any sort of confidence I had in myself and my skills. Thought my years of eduction I acquired a whole bunch of random skills that were useful in the moment but are already mostly forgotten, so I don't even have anything significant to put on a resume. I spend most of my time programming on odd unfinished projects I have that at this point I'm not sure if I'll ever finish and I do so throughout the whole day, but since a lot of that time is actually spent distracting myself from difficult problems I stumble on in the project, with RUclips, I can't really claim that I'm really working on something either.
I'm sorry I highjacked this comment section to rant about life, the honesty of this channel just kinda pokes me in my raw bits sometimes.

Kinda weird to watch this after just watching the GPU boxart video on 2kliksphilip, which might as well be one of my top 5 favorite videos across your 3 channels. That is to say, after watching that video I'd never had guessed you'd be having these sort of thoughts, since the video was so creative and entertaining.
What you do really matters. I guess the positive comments tend to get buried under so many responses and other comments that it's unlikely you'll ever read this, but in case you do, know that what you're doing matters a lot.
And if you want to know why, just take me for example. Computer science undergrad and getting into a master's degree in AI. And even though I went the opposite direction in a way - getting into higher education and all that - I still enjoy watching your AI videos and I think they're super interesting, despite this being a field I work and have experience in. I even liked the videos you've said were underperformers like the interview with an AI and the one where you tried to fool the GPT detector.
So yeah, know that we're here for you and your personality, regardless of what the content is. Even if you recorded a video of something as boring as you building a PC or walking in a park chances are I'd still watch it. And I think I'm speaking for a good chunk of the audience when I say what keeps us coming back is you and not the content of the videos necessarily.

honestly, i love watching your stuff because of you. your style of presenting information is very enjoyable to watch even if I have very little to do with said information. but I also think your skill in making these videos is part of why I like them. you put a lot of effort into small things like showing of maps in cs from the same spots or making your own maps to show something specific. that and your editing is pretty good in my opinion.
even your weirder videos like how to (do x) like me are just fun to watch even if I can't always apply them to myself, living in a different country and so on.
i followed you for a long time, and I don't even remember when I started watching you, the first videos I saw where probably not even registered as them being from you yet.

3:52 Oh how ironic is it that for me, having founded a company and struggling from lack of clients & prospects, and not having a RUclips channel or otherwise enough reach to help me find them, feel pretty much the same way but from the other side of the fence - I'd love to develop games for example, but we neither have enough community reach to make it commercially viable nor enough business reach to sit at the right table during the meetings where these things are decided...
EDIT: My point being, still very much living the half-life - I enjoy what I'm doing a lot and get the opportunity to work from home or go to our office at any time that I want ; the obvious tradeoff is that when there's stuff to deliver, we'll be crunching hard (we worked all day and night yesterday until 6am this morning). We still mostly do get our weekends though :-)
