My mum got a pair of these for my dad as a very expensive present because he was a very keen birdwatcher. They never worked properly, and despite sending them to canon multiple times to be repaired at great expense they always sent them back saying there was nothing wrong with them. When my mum later for some of her own they worked fine, making it clear the first lot was faulty and no matter how much money they threw at Canon they refused to provide working ones. A sad way to treat one of the world's best biologists in his lifelong passion. Thanks Canon.
I've made battery terminals in the past using nickel alloy flat stock. Thanks for the tips. I am looking to replace the door to the battery compartment due to a leaking DuraCell battery.
Had an issue that required removing the battery door and wasn't sure how to go about disassembling the rubber and front of the body. Thanks to your video it's off and in my hand as we speak! Thanks so much for the tutorial, keep up the great work!! :D
Hi, thanks very much for making this video. I had mould growing on the inside of my front (objective) lenses and didn't know how to get inside and clean them until I saw your piece. Fifteen minutes and they're perfect again! Cheers Neil
I recommend using Lithium (non-rechargeable) batteries such as GP Lithium in your valuable kit. The battery compartment in my $1200 Fujinon TechnoStabi binos got ruined using Duracell Alkalines that leaked. The lithium type are more expensive but due to the chemistry they don't have the inevitable leaking problem that all alkalines do once they go flat. You can leave 'em in without worry. Thanks for the video, maybe this will help me find to find a way in to my Fujinons to fix the broken linkage (I dropped them!).
my 15x50 IS binoculars are fine (ok, the rubber coating is going sticky..) but your video reminded me not to trash a $1000 pair of binoculars by leaving old batteries in there so thanks for that! Your effort to post the video is much appreciated.
Hey, thanks for the video! My 15x45 pair has the exact same problem (corroded battery resulted in a terminal breaking off). Also, the little plastic piece that slides to lock the battery cover down is also broken. Seeing the inside of yours makes me think I can just open mine up, solder a long pair of wires to the battery terminals (where they are already soldered) and run those out the battery compartment to an external battery holder (I can probably attach it to the neck strap). Your video is super helpful to be able to see what is needed to open it up. Will let you know how it goes...
This was very helpful. Mine are a Version II, so I may be able to get them cleaned and collimated by Canon or by a shop with experience with these IS models. Thanks for the tips, especially the secrets of cover removal and the use of CLR to get rid of the remnants of rust and corrosion. I use De-Oxit on corroded connectors, as well as CorrosionX, particularly on automotive connectors which are very sensitive to any increase in resistance and the corresponding drop in voltage(especially in low voltage control circuits), but using a spray may not be advisable with this type of electronics in a prevision optical device, unless first applied to a cotton swab, and then applied as you did with CLR. P.S. The battery holder looked like a standard 2-battery holder, and a replacement unit may be available from Amazon, Ebay, or Ali Baba. But I would take it to an electronics repair shop first, since they work with and repair broken connectors all the time. For those with questions about getting continued IS operation with one button click, and turning it off with a 2nd click, please check your owners manual for how your model is supposed to operate -.download one from Canon or elsewhere if you don't have a printed copy of the manual that was shipped with it when first purchased. My type II 12 x 36 only operate when the button is depressed.
Fantastic review.. however the battery cover metal piece broke/came off .. where can I get a new battery cover…? I fixed the battery cover, removed the rubber casing.. battery wires are in good shape but the IS won’t turn on with fresh batteries..
Ebay sells the battery covers for the Canon Binos. The center lock mechanism on my battery cover just broke and now the IS won't work even if I hold it down tight so must make some elec connection once locked.
Hello. I found this used Canon 15x45 IS binoculars here, by 500 usd. Is it good choice? Not too much old ? I think the electronic parts cant survive too many times. What is the best, pay 800-900usd in new model 15x50 ( used ) or pay 500 in old model 15x45 and pray for electronic parts still good in next years ?
Hi, why the green light is not on. I have the same binoculars. I have to keep the button pressed. is this normal. on other models the button is turned on, the button is turned off again. Is my binoculars defective
This is normal operation for this model. My 15 X 50 IS Canon binoculars allow pressing the button for as long as you want or to just tap the button for the IS to energize and then tap once again to turn it off. Once it is turned on by tapping it will time out and automatically turn off after a couple minutes. The 12 X 36 model just energizes as long as you hold the button in.

Thank you very much, exactly my model. Batteries left in and no apparent leak, but both contacts broken. Fixed with stranded copper wire and solder!

I suggest soldering a small spring to the remaining portion of the broken spring contact.
I am looking for help on how to replace the battery compartment door on a Cannon 10X30 IS binocular.

@@glevideo so in my 12x36 is model, continuous operation is not possible?
@@nx7640 Don't think it's possible with the 12 X 36
@@glevideo The 12x36 fixed green light you have repaired does not light
thank you very much yes it is normal(Stabilizer operates as long as you hold down the ImageStabilizer button.) - canon user manual-
This helped me a lot. Thanks!
Can you tell me what batteries the 1st gen uses? I lost the battery pack and 2 AA do not seem to work.
Sorry, I don't know that. My model uses two AA batteries.
2 x AA
