    To some extent I agreed with this Poet, must especially on the name: Yoruba. In Ijebu, where I spent my childhood it's mostly people from Oyo State we called Yoruba. In history people don't usually call themselves names, it's usually outsiders that do give name to generalize people. Name like Nigeria and Africa were given by outsiders.

    • @AdemolaTella
      @AdemolaTella 5 лет назад

      Sir, the name Nigeria was taken from the Niger River running through the country. It was the idea of a British journalist Flora Shaw, who later married Lord Lugard, a British colonial administrator. It was coined in the late 19th century.

    The entire history became complicated when he linked Oduwa to Christianity, when you study history with a preconceived notion you come up with diluted accounts, we need to back up from all this complicated stories passed from self motivated accounts and rewrite our history starting from own own earliest account that has nothing to do with foreign input. Successful nations writes its own history not seek affirmation from others. Bless

    Sorry for the use of the word stupid, but I expect someone of his caliber to not fall into fallacies and innuendos. Every society and clans has a par history and it is always evolved, ours is not an exception. Until lately, we are all known and identified by our distinguish dialects,ie Egba,Ibarapa,Ketu,Ijebu,Ekiti and the like. The people our forebears referred to as Yoruba are the Oyos, Oyo includes Oyo, Ibadan, Ogbomoso, Osogbo, that is mostly present day Oyo state excluding the Ibarapas and Osun state not including Ife,Ilesa and Ila. Why I disagree with him is his assertion that the Hausa gave us the name, from whose version of history is he quoting that fable from. He should also have known who gave the Hausa, Ibo and Ijaw there names. Mr Okoli, I can not stand to accept fallacies from those who are educated to believe and spread beer parlour assumptions as facts. I expect him to know better as a public figure whose opinion matters to his followers.

      This elewi got everything mixed up. If we are truly interested in our ancestry we should use modern science rather than the imagination of one man. Let our rich or wealthy people put their money where their heart is - sponsor archeological programs to dig and find our past; launch massive DNA profiling to trace our migratory past. Listening to this elewi carefully makes you see his bias. He needs to cling to something to feel good. Unfortunately he is using unscientific methods that cannot be refuted. There are better ways of telling our story. Ewi is our poetry, but this elewi has used this medium in a destructive manner. I will leave everyone with a Pandora: how does Esu translate to Satan?

    I enjoyed the cadence of this poet’s poem. Thank you for such a wonderful delivery. Most of the poem is based on Omo-ti-Noah-bi which later metamorphosed to Yoruba’s Omolúàbí, the same way Lamurudu resulted from Nimrod in the Bible. I am a Christian, my father is Àgbà Òjè, Emi ni Omo Oloje òkósó Omo elégún sékétéebéré, àrè Làgbàyí, ará Òjowòn. We are Yorubas before Oduduwa arrived Ile-Ife to found Yoruba dynasty. This is reflected in the difference between Ifè dialect compared to us in Origbo(8miles from Ife) who speak Yoruba Òyó. Yaruba or Yariba that you referenced in your poem derives from Larubawa(Yoruba’s name for northerners. I encourage you to visit Òkè Ìtasè in Ife to learn more about Yoruba. You are talented and I want you to use your voice in rendering more poems such as my oriki, emi omo Ajibogunde, emi náàn ni ESO Ikoyi Omo afojugangan gbofà, ESO to ba gbofa leyin, o sagun ni, Siga ni I ba s’agun ni abi Sìgo, emi Omo ar’erú bèèrè ènì....abbl

    In scholarships, which this work should have qualified, objectivity and logicality are among the fundamental considerations. To my mind, Baba Akewi's research lacks these ingredients in the fact that the Christian faith's theories/perspectives influenced his work. He should have detached himself from this (seeming) association.

Yoruba have been in ile-ife for 6000 years and all we have is oramiyan obelisk??? when there is compelling evidence to show that there has been many mass migration patterns in the interior of Africa. What we tend to get wrong is that Africa is a share continent with many different people that was builders of the ancient world. All the way from Iraq to Chad lake area to Sub Saharan Africa. Clearly people like you are naive to even think that Abraham was a European. Some of you just make unnecessary noise about irrelevance. What you are hammering is very petty. What Yoruba means in another person's language is not a point. All over the world, in most cases, nations bear the names they were given by strangers or outsiders. How many tribes or nations sit down to give themselves names? Take the càse of Ibadan. Was it Ibadan people that gave the city the name? It is when strangers are describing or going to the place they say they are going to Eba odan. If Yoruba means alarekere (cunning, yes that is what it means, not bastard) it doesn't mean so in our own language, so why should we care what it means in other people's language? If you adopt omoluabi as name for our tribe, suppose you find out tomorrow that it means oloriburuku in Portuguese are you going to begin to look for another name to bear? Have you checked the origin of the word Haus itself?It came from a word meaning savages! So when you call them hausas, does it make them savages? Oranmiyan gave the name Ibinu to the land we now call Bini. And that is what they still bear, despite that it means angér in Yoruba! Oshogbo came from Osho inu Igbo. Should they change it? What is the meaning of the names our people bear? What does Oyo, Egba, Ekiti, Ijesha, Ijebu, etc mean? Can you tell us? If they have no meaning, why don't you tell us to change them to names with meaning? America derived its name from the name of a foreign Italian explorer and that is the name it's people bear now. All over the world we are known as Yoruba, there is no need taking up another name. There is no part of Yoruba that does not see itself as Yoruba now. So no need making unnecessary noise about the origin of the name.

    -The Meaning of the word "Yoruba", both in literal definition and Percieved definition
    -Why are the "Yoruba speaking slaves in Brazil and other parts of the world omoluabi" .

      The Oyo people were the ORIGINAL Yoruba people. The name "Yoruba" was created by Samuel Crowther who, gave the name to all the tribes that were subjected by Oyo rule (Egba, Ijebu, Ekiti, Ondo etc). The name "Yoruba" comes from "YARBA" who Sultan Bello of the Sokoto Caliphate called "Remnants of the children of Kanaan"; They are the Oyo people. Who are the Oyo people today? They are the EWE/EVE people of Ghana, Togo, Benin and western Nigeria today. The name Oyo was a corruption Eyeo, and Eyeo was a corruption of EVEO(EVE/EWE) as the Europeans couldn't pronounced the "V" in our name. Lamurudu and Oduduwa has nothing or no relation to the Oyo people at all. That appellation came from the Borgu or Nupe people that came from Arabia as evidenced by their legend of Kisra.

      The history of Yoruba in the book history of Nigeria is wrong Oduduwa can not be from Edo, today many people are bearing Yoruba name and nobody is with Edo name among all the Yoruba's as many as we are, this to tell you that Edo is borrowing from Yoruba, Izoduwa is what they call Oduduwa in Edo state not that he is from Edo, Yoruba is a dominant culture that can be found in few countries in Africa and till today they are still speaking Yoruba till today, even in the Bible most of the names are Yoruba names eg: ASA, TOLA omo DODO, SOLOMON which when broken down it goes like this: IMO is knowledge, SO-LO is like when you say sometime is quick to, and when you conjugate them together it goes SOLOMON meaning wisdom comes to him easily and today the families SOLOMON are the ones ruling in as OBA till today that is why OBA defendants must have the title ADE this to attached the Royalty to one famil because only the family of king David is the only family granted by God to hold the Scepter till Christ who his also from the lineage of king David comes back and rule as king forever
      Genesis 49:10
      [10]The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.
      The Yorubas had one of the best system of government before the Europeans came because the blessing to be the lawgiver was given to the Yoruba

      Sorry for overlooking the question about how to identity Hebraic people
      Hebrew was derived from Eber from whom the Hebrew descended,
      These are the nations that are Hebrews and mind you to be and Hebrew doesn't classify you as an Israelite, EBER descended from SHEM, ABRAHAM descended from EBER, the HEBAIC generations started from EBER because it was his time the whole world divided because GOD confused their language so everybody associated with the language they understood
      ABRAHAM is the father of most of the Hebrews that are common to us to day
      ABRAHAM begat the following Hebrew: Ishmael the progenitor of the ARABS
      ISAAC begat ESUA and JACOB who were twins
      ESUA came out red from the womb of the mother, red is what they turned to white man today, ESAU is the Progenitor of White race, he was the first white man ever created, JACOB came out normal, a normal melanic person, man was created with Melanie to prevent sun burn, but ESAU had no Melanie more like albino
      JACOB is the progenitor of the 12 tribes who are blacks with various colour of shades
      Please discard the his told by Jacob Egbarhewa, he is a Benin man, he is only attributing the history to his people, today the Edo people having Yoruba name this alone will tell you that it was from Yoruba side people went to Edo to established royalty, the question you need to ask is why are the Yoruba's not bearing Edo names, Yoruba have more kings than any nation in the world, hardly you see a state without 3-4 king in each of the Yoruba States, this is what we have been practicing since the time of king David
      Genesis 10:21-25
      [21]Unto Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber, the brother of Japheth the elder, even to him were children born.
      [22]The children of Shem; Elam, and Asshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud, and Aram.
      [23]And the children of Aram; Uz, and Hul, and Gether, and Mash.
      [24]And Arphaxad begat Salah; and Salah begat Eber.
      [25]And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided; and his brother's name was Joktan.
      Please don't follow what was complied by simple mind, there is no history that you want to know that is not in the Bible, God gave it to our fore father because HE knew the gentiles will diabolically hide if from us,

    • @HaitiRestoration9530
      @HaitiRestoration9530 7 лет назад

      philliptiwo1 Wrong again! The world was divided when Peleg was born because that is what his name signified. Avraam was called the FIRST Hebrew. HEBREW is a corruption of the consonant pronunciation "IVRI" which is pronounced Eʋe or BNEI EVER as the proselyte Jews call today. EBER is also a corruption of the word Eʋe/EVER the progenitor of the "Hebrews", who are Joctanites and Pelegites. ESAU is BLACK just like JACOB just a different shade. It is ridiculous to call ESAU the progenitor of the white people! If he is then, who the heck are the Gentiles then?? And who are the children of Japheth?? There are black people in AFRICA and the Americas today that have reddish pigmented skin- we call it light skin. Like the Yoruba man you see in this video holding the drum. The EDO people consist of two tribes that are descendants ESAU today. It is the ISHAN/ESAN and the URHOBO. In the ancient maps of Africa and some books, their region on the map was called "ADOM" as A in their language is pronounced E, like in the Eʋe language today. They also have many customs that are reminiscent of the of what the People in Canaan practiced. They are also Hebrews but not Israelites. Samual crowther was born in the 1800's in which that is the century when the word "YORUBA" was born. Thus it is ONLY 2-300 YEARS OLD. The Benin/EDO empire has been around since the 15-1600s and was an empire. ALL African books state this! Yet you claim that Jacob Egarevba is a liar? Where is YOUR proof again? The Alaafin system and OBA system derive from the EDO people. It is just a system of dukeship like in the EDOMITE empire in the Holy Bible. The Majority of Gods of the Yoruba are Benin gods which Obatala, Orasinla and a few others being indigenous to the Yoruba. You really need to read other African history books one or two is not a factual source. Many of these books contradict each other and with proper research, one will find the truth. I asked how do YOU know that YOU are a Hebrew? Not a biblical background. I want to know your people and tribe and I'll tell you who they are.
      Like I said before, who is the father of the Yoruba people today if you claim that they were a "related" confederation of tribes.

    I think this is a bit bias towards Christianity. He says that Yoruba have always been practicing like Christians but, Christianity as we know it today came about through slavery and colonization. I believe Islam came to Africa first through trading of goods. It was not forcefully done as suggested in this or definitely not as forcefully imposed as Christianity was.

      European and Arab Slave trade in African
      In respond to your statement “Christianity as we know it today came about through slavery and colonization. I believe Islam came to Africa first through trading of goods. It was not forcefully done as suggested in this or definitely not as forcefully imposed as Christianity was”. I couldn’t agree more but, let us examine some of the facts of Arab Muslims slave trade in Africa continent.
      1) Please before you read any further visit this website and read this article tiled “Letter from Uthman Bin Idris, The Sultan Of Borno To Barquq, The Mamluk Sultan Of Egypt” in c.1390. Read more: newsrescue.com/letter-uthman-bin-idris-sultan-borno-barquq-mamluk-sultan-egypt/#ixzz4ReWnDljt also keep in mind that “In 1441, the first slaves were brought to Portugal from northern Mauritania”. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_slavery#cite_note-Oliveira-196
      2) The Islamist militant group Boko Haram, in their quest for Islamic caliphate country they have displaces millions, abducted over 250 innocent girls from Chibok school and converted some to Islam, killed young men and raped the women. Not to mention all the other act of barbarism around the North-eastern part of Nigeria.
      3) Arab slave trade: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arab_slave_trade
      4) 10 Facts About The Arab Enslavement Of Black People Not Taught In Schools:
      atlantablackstar.com/2014/06/02/10-facts-about-the-arab-enslavement-of-black-people-not-taught-in-schools/
      This is African holocaust, the fact that both the European Christians and Arab Muslims were involved in African slave trade and genocide of African people, and no amount of comparison can justify these acts of barbarism and atrocity. For our children’s sake, we must never forget the TRUE history of acts of barbarism and atrocity which was committed on African men, women, and children, not to mention the seizure of African territory, occupation, colonization, division of our lands (The Berlin Conference of 1884-85) and slavery.

      @Hey Halimah, I agree with you regarding the bias, it's very much along the lines of Reverend Samuel Johnson's book (don't let the name fool you, he was a Yoruba man), the Rev demonised Orisas (of course he did he was a product of missionaries and British rule!) and he was quite grateful they brought Christianity to Nigeria. Also the whole thing about "Omoluabi" or "Iwa Pele" is the journey Yorubas are meant to strive towards, it's core to Ifa tenets.

      Our fore fathers were the real Christians before the Romans(Europeans) invaded our fore fathers in Jerusalem this lead to their fleeing to Saudi Arabia and the surrounding counties like Yemen, Egypt and North Africa where Mohammed killed lots of them because of their Christian believe, non of our fore fathers were Muslim, lots were converted by force to Muslim by the Arabs who are not related to us, we are the really Israelites, our fore father is Jacob and not Ismael the fore father of the Arabs and our King is Christ who is also from our tribe: the tribe of Judah the West Africans

      TK Ooo from my research, Oyo is Judah while Ife is Levi. judah/Oyo is the political arm while Levi/ife is the spiritual arm. That is why the Alafin and the Ooni always disagree on who is the elder. if we let scripture guide us, Judah is the elder brother but the staff of Aaron is the elder in spirital affairs and coronation of a new king. we have a lot to learn.

      Oun, on do to part of Edo are all tribes of Judah, you can see it in their characters, they are the most stubborn of all the 12 tribes
      Where IFA is largely concentrated is where the tribe of Levi are eg:Ijebu, Abekuta , Lagos extending to Republic of Bene, we believed the Ijebu and Abeokuta are fun of voodoo, it is because the are Levi that converted the mode of worshipping God to IFA when we missed our way

    The real name of Yoruba is Judah, we are the House of Judah that migrated to Egypt and from Egypt to West Africa during the time of Jeremiah, even Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch his script writer migrated with them and there they breath their last and the rest of the House of Judah migrated during the Roman(European) invasion of Jerusalem
    Jeremiah 43:4-7
    [4]So Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces, and all the people, obeyed not the voice of the LORD, to dwell in the land of Judah.
    [5]But Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces, took all the remnant of Judah, that were returned from all nations, whither they had been driven, to dwell in the land of Judah;
    [6]Even men, and women, and children, and the king's daughters, and every person that Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Jeremiah the prophet, and Baruch the son of Neriah.
    [7]So they came into the land of Egypt: for they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: thus came they even to Tahpanhes.

      my brother that guy is telling the real story, the Yorubas are the remnant of Judah, even Jeremiah warn them not to go to Egypt but they hack not to his voice and even he was took by force along with them to the land of Egypt, then God said Egypt will have no power over any nation again and the people of Judah will be force to flew to another land where they will forget their language, their God and worship the gods of the land, and for you to know the real Israel are black, not white, and the real egyptian are the sudan, the egyptian today are the arabians that come and distroyed the land of Egypt also the egypt was divided into 2 upper egypt become the egypt of today why the lower egypt become sudan then the Israel where force to leave the land to this present land today calling Yoruba

      I'm yoruba and after studying yoruba history, I noticed that we were not always in Nigeria and when we arrived, we were far advanced. Also, the dates tally up with wars in ancient Khemet and mass immigration after waves upon waves of the Persian/Assyrians army forced us to move west wards following the Nile to find a better forested area that can be better defended. But all those wars and mass migration, took its toll and we lost alot of knowledge, there's actually linguistics evidence to back this, the modern Arab 'egyptians' of today don't have nothing in their language, culture or religion in common with ancient Egyptians.
