This is my favorite Burke era Twelve O'Clock High episode. The only problem is that every time Jack Lord appears on screen I get an almost irresistible urge to start humming the Hawaii 5-0 theme.

Jack Lord was offered the role of Captain Kirk but he ask Roddenberry for 50% ownership of Star Trek. Roddenberry offered the role to Shatner instead. Probably a much better choice. Lord might have been impossible to work with but on the other hand, NBC might not have cancelled ST after 3 seasons if Lord had been there … but then Nimoy and Kelly might have walked off the set. If Lord had done ST, he might have never been offered Hawaii 5-0 either.
Dominic Frontiere wrote the most stirring, dramatic, and poignant music for shows like 12 O'clock High and Rat Patrol. Even when the stories were farfetched or unrealistic, the music almost made up for it.
@William Dean It was all leaded. Avgas is higher in octane than mogas. Wasted octane, but the avgas was just fine in ground vehicles. Captured German mogas was OK for ground equipment, but their avgas wasn't good enough for US and UK aircraft engines. When the Germans captured some of our avgas, they never had it so good.
Probably against all rules to do so,but if I were a pilot of a B-17 in war time I would teach member of my crew how to fly the ship. Let them take control on the return trip. Never know when you’ll need back-up. After all that red shirted copilot gets it in every episode!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
How the resources, time and education is spent on each is a matter of clockwork, is also the qualification gauntlet, people who want to be gunners, or deemed unable to pass flight school, end up there, maybe to try again after commissions as NCO's, pilots, people who train pilots, that took up time, money, given how long it took to fully train pilots and as flight officers was pretty much already maxed out, not sure if that would be feasible, I can appreciate what your practical sense is though
The directors wanted a "younger" man to lead the 12 O'Clock High show so Robert Lansing flew off into the clouds and Paul Burke took over. Never mind that in reality Lansing was a couple of years younger than Paul Burke.
I think that was just a cover story. Quinn Martin in a later magazine article said he and Lansing were constantly battling over scripts and mutually agreed that his character would leave the series. Probably explains why Burke's character was somewhat dry-cleaned after the first episode of the show. Burke later did another episode during the first season so I think QM had it in his mind to replace Lansing with him.

Robert Julian! I agree with you 100%, Paul Burke just does not fit this part,Robert Lansing as General Frank Savage was perfect, but ABC had the final say so.
Word is Lansing and Quinn Martin could not get along and that was the real reason he left the show. Official reason was the show was moving from 10 pm to 7:30 pm and they needed a "younger" star. Burke was about 3 months younger than Lansing!
Richard Burton, Ruth Roman, Curt Juergens and the one and only Sir Christopher Lee were all in this great WW2 movie called Bitter Victory, which was set in Cairo and Libya.
I was a soldier during WW 2 in my previous life, possibly even in the air corp. And that's where I died. At least that's one explanation of why I'm so obsessed with everything WW 2. I've read every book and seen every movie that I can get my hands on. I still build model airplanes and play combat and fighter pilot RPG's and I'm 63. 12 O'Clock High was and is my favorite TV show (along with Combat!) I still can't get enough. Just seeing a flight of Spitfires on TV can make me bawl like a baby for some reason. It's either that or I'm just a dork. LOL

And I might want to add, I miss the Geneal. The show changed from series to soap from beginning of season 2. Actors overacting or just being brutally bad... sad.

A makeshift tower would not be capable of giving a heading to an alternate landing sight. They didn't have enough information. It would have been up to the crew, specifically the navigator.
I do not think historical/technical accuracy is why we all watch "12 O'Clock High" (I like seeing the soon to be big name actors/actresses on their way up and some darn good acting) but I must say that jeeps/trucks and the Studebaker built Wright radial used on the B-17 do not use the same octane gasoline. It would be wasteful to use high octane fuel in a jeep but it would still run without damage. On the other hand using low octane fuel in the aircraft radial would be terminal. The engine would start, probably get the plane airborne but soon there would be preignition along with detonation (all due to the low octane fuel). I do not believe that the ground crew could modify (well easily modify)the radial to accept the low octane fuel with acceptable performance and no damage to the radial. The radial simply demands higher octane fuel than a jeep. A few years back I was at a Midwest small airport. An air show was scheduled for the weekend. I just had to make the event, in fact I drove by early (a couple of people were there early.) Guy with a Studebaker automobile had me take a picture of him standing next to his car and the EAA fully restored and flyable B-17 "Aluminum Overcast" pretty neat. If you had a few extra bucks laying around (like 300.00) you could go for a 45 minute ride in Aluminum Overcast.

The cost kept getting more and more so I just said, oh heck with it,i t's never getting any cheaper (The cost of running these artifacts is astronomical). Anyway, after take off, they let us have the run of the plane, going where ever we could scramble! The pilots seemed like kids (I guess it was appropriate!) and even though the weather was perfect, they landed with the best 3 point landing I could ever imagine! Perfect! And meanwhile the view of Seattle was stunning! I will never regret the $400 I spent for a 30 minute ride! What a plane!

That's what I saw too. The first 2 vehicles were half-tracks with stars on their sides. I thought it was the good guys coming to save the day. Seems like they could get their hands on some German WWII footage to portray the bad guys.

Robert Lansing was Gen. Frank Savage the first year. They stupidly killed him off in favor of a "younger looking" character, Gallagher who starred until the show was cancelled.
Marc Freedman, no. But he could have with his stronger character. It'd be difficult to get him over from ground Army to O5/6 level of flying, but I think his character could've pulled it off!!??
Thank you for coming to the defense of Paul Burke. The show's Zeitgeist wasn't going to have Robert Lansing for more than a year anyway, or the series itself for very long after this. The entire cast did a magnificent job.
Well, I am pretty sure Col Joe Gallagher needs to apply Army reg O6-O5, which states my full Col O-6 outranks your Ltc O-5 and take command of the situation. So, pull rank Joe and move forward. Savage would have done it in a heartbeat...LOL

Parts looks suspiciously like the scene out of the attack on Tobruk in the 1953 movie The Desert Rats with Richard Burton.
MUCH recycled footage was used. An awful lot of inaccuracies are also present, such as JU87s (Stuka dive bombers) making fighter attacks.

That's what I saw too. The first 2 vehicles were half-tracks with stars on their sides. I thought it was the good guys coming to save the day. Seems like they could get their hands on some German WWII footage to portray the bad guys.
What you expect? Besides they aren't going to use much footage of the German armor kicking the allies asses, is unamerican by the days standard

Robert Lansing was Gen. Frank Savage the first year. They stupidly killed him off in favor of a "younger looking" character, Gallagher who starred until the show was cancelled.

Thank you for coming to the defense of Paul Burke. The show's Zeitgeist wasn't going to have Robert Lansing for more than a year anyway, or the series itself for very long after this. The entire cast did a magnificent job.
Well, I am pretty sure Col Joe Gallagher needs to apply Army reg O6-O5, which states my full Col O-6 outranks your Ltc O-5 and take command of the situation. So, pull rank Joe and move forward. Savage would have done it in a heartbeat...LOL
