Have to say one of the most enjoyable let's plays I've seen on this game. I love how you pay attention to every detail and have the patience to listen/watch all the radio and tv stuff and read the manuscripts. Some people are losing so much of this game when just rushing through the game. I've played through this game multiple times, but thank you for good reminder on the story so far, will surely watch your journey through this. 😊
Would be crazy if you could play Control. Other people already mentioned it: it's in the same universe and Alan Wake 2 already hinted a lot of connections. Your LP-style fits pretty well because reading everything is important in Control.
One of the few horror games I never played, cant wait to get my hands on this new version and try it myself. You are a joy to watch, love how you check out all the details and appreciate the craftmanship of the devs. Thanks for the jolly playthrough.
You aren't alone in being "tired" of the combat/mechanics and similarity of the fights in this episode, but I personally feel that is intentional on the part of the developers. First, this is an expositional episode story wise: you're told a lot of what is going on, and then given quite a bit of time to think about how the information fits into the world view you've already established as you (literally) walk from one end of the game world to the other (this "settling" of your world view is important due to what happens next). Second, they are ramping up the difficulty of the encounters, and giving you time to build the habit patterns that you'll need later to handle the really difficult encounters to come. You happen to be good enough mechanics wise that you handled most of this easily (but you still need to learn how to deal with instant spawn multiple foes!), so it seems more repetitive to you than it may to others. Finally, realize that at the time this game came out, very large worlds that were done REALLY well (both art and engine wise) were still relatively rare, and there's a bit of developer "pride" here going on, wanting to show off just how big the world really was. In fairness as well, you did make a few "choices" that greatly extended the length of the episode as well--not taking the vehicle that was literally in your face at the start of the episode (which you later realized), to crossing over the same areas multiple times (going back and forth at the radio tower branch point as an example). All in all though, you are playing this MUCH better than most, and understanding it better than about 90% of the rest of the reviewer world, which is awesome!
@@whysorandom4096 a lot of people fail to recognize that almost every melee attack against you stuns, and then complain that the controls "don't work right" when you try to dodge while stunned. Most reactors also constantly sprint, and then complain that they "dodged" when you in fact need stamina to dodge (well), further leading to the "controls are broken" when they are just trying to do the wrong things at the wrong time. That being said, she's gotten past almost all of that, except for the surprise flanks which I'm sure she gets figured out (turns out she's already finished the game, so it's not like we can help much along the way in any case).
@WhiteHawk77 Alan Wake 1-2 is easily the greatest horror series of all time, and the first games gameplay was smooth, satisfying, and fun. It's perfect
@@whysorandom4096 your opinion differs to the majority, Alan Wake (the original game we are taking about here) has other strengths, combat isn’t one of them and is certainly not perfect, not that any game is. You are clearly a fanboy of great exaggeration for the series.
1:11:45 Fun fact about "Nik'si-Pir'kah, the Dweller in Flesh"; So, Remedy is a Finnish developer. In Finland, there are two major store chains, S-Group and Kesko. Kesko has an internal brand called "Pirkka", which also distributes an advertisement magazine of the same name. In that magazine there's a segment "Niksi-Pirkka" (which could be translated something like "Pirkka Tricks") that give out life hacks in the vein of "How to make a bird-feeder out of a pair of old pantyhose" and such.
In the NIGHT SPRINGS episode, the journalist Alvin Derleth shares a name with the famous author and HP Lovecraft promoter August Derleth. August Derleth has a mixed reputation among HPL fans, but to be fair, he was a fantastic horror author in his own rights. His short story, 'The Lonesome Place,' is a classic of weird fiction. Did remedy choose the name deliberately? Sure, why not?
when I was playing alan wake, this segment with the hill and the other route through the forest also had me going back and forth many times, trying to figure out which one wasn't the right path lol
Never played this game, but from what I can gather so far is that, all these darkness people are pissed at Alan Wake because they are ill fated in his stories/books. Thats why the kidnapper wanted the manuscripts, so he knows how to avoid his fate. The darkness lady is probably pissed because she loses a loved one, hence the mourning clothes. Thats my guess for now.
@@Camothor10 That's why it's called "a theory"🤦🏼♂️. It is not meant to be factual or based on what actually happens. Just let people have harmless theories dude. You potentially just took a lot of imagination away from someone who said they hadn't played the game. Even if you say you aren't being disrespectful you kinda are just that by telling someone they are wrong. And if you need to clarify that you aren't being disrespectful then at least some part of what you are saying is likely disrespectful in some way.
The coffee thermoses are there because lead writer, Sam Lake is a huge coffee nut (like me) and thermoses left at campgrounds just seem to fit. Spoiler for Control: You can find a coffee tennis just like these in the Containment sector, and a document describing its properties. Any coffee you put in it is piping hot whenever you pour it out and is the best tasting cup of coffee you can imagine regardless of the quality or temperature of the coffee you put in.
I wonder if she is going to play Control. If not, i need to pick it up before AW2 comes. She plays so well, that i would be just happy watch her play instead of playing it myself.
I agree this episode was slow , but the episode after this one is wiildd... (I also missed that page in the mines because I didn't know which way to go first 😅)
@Kastaclysm I don't know if there's a special meaning to the coffee thermoses. It is a common trope that writers drink/need a lot of coffee. I'm unaware of any deeper meaning than that. Also, there's an old phrase in English, "burning the midnight oil". The phrase simply refers to working very late... you're having to burn your oil during midnight, back when people used oil for light instead of electricity. Though I don't think there's any connection, I like to imagine there is in regards to the black oil spots you can occasionally burn away. The "working late" theme fits with the drinking coffee theme.
1:04:20 Once again, we face this channel's greatest adversary: dodging Also, I understand you feeling exhausted near the end. You had to back track and today a lot of areas several times, and just the nature of a completionist is sometimes wearing yourself down searching every wrong path and out-of-the-way corner for collectibles. Definitely don't want you to stop doing that because I LOVE completionist players like you! Buuut... Just trying to offer some empathy in saying you're not crazy for feeling like you wanted the last chapter to just be over with. You weren't learning anything new or seeing anything new, just... Walking in circles. Good luck and keep up the great work going forward! ☺️

You are missing a technique: always keep your "drop flares" (not your flare gun) equipped, and if you get surprised, immediately drop one--it has no timer and is better than dodging a single attack. This force them to back off instead of swinging (or at most, swinging once then backing off), which then gives you time to assess what to do. Flashbangs are actually *not* your "get out of jail free" card, because as you've noted, they have no immediate effect: they take 2-3 seconds before they go off, and when you get surprised, by that time you're about dead.
I don’t think it’s pacing so much as you’re afraid of missing something important you are indecisive and that’s making it feel longer. Combat definitely increases difficulty in this chapter but you get used to it. I also think a little of it is the age of the game. Still a blast seeing you struggle the same places I did the first time through. 😜
They actually sold the Oh deer thermos in September unfortunately i didn't realize it was only for September LOL. Also i really hope if there is driving in Alan wake 2 its much improved from the first game.
The setting can get repetitive, yes, but I think the gameplay elements have enough variety to keep the situation itself from feeling monotonous. I mean, sometimes you have both gun and flashlight, but sometimes you have neither, other times just a flashlight, or just flashbangs, sometimes you're fighting poltergeists, sometimes birds, etc. And it's not really too often that you're just running through a huge, nondescript wooded area. All that being said, I don't think we're meant to play each full episode in one sitting. I couldn't blame you for being exhausted from it here, lol.
Well now you're just crashing on purpose... 😜 Your dodge game was on point in this episode though 🏃🏻♂_But I'm still rather partial to the accidental "bunny-hop" technique_ 😁 Plus that Poltergeist impersonation was top notch 📺👧🏻👌🏻 Pacing wise? Felt kinda like 2 chapters, 'cause the kidnapper jerks you around pointing you to the mine then to the mountain back to back. I figure it's to show the arduous marathon lengths Wake is willing to go through to save Alice. Also gives them plenty of time to fill out some backstory of the darkness and show it off as it ramps up in power. Addendum : Threesomes, Bulldozers and H.P. Lovecraft? 🤷🏻♂... Seriously I never saw it coming 😐
I felt the same way playing this the first time, but the narrative is so good I ended up finishing the game. Glad i did because Control + DLC’s are great. You should definitely try and get those done before playing AW2.
Someone else might have said it already, but originally the game was planned to be open world, that's why you have cars and places like the radio tower that make no sense in a regular level design perspective. This game had a lot of love put into it. And that's why I love it despite it's flaws
Hey Maggie, I saw you said that you will play AW2, but are you planning on playing Control? It is actually tied in to these games and there are a lot of references to Control and some shared characters, so AW2 will be much more enjoyable if you actually play Control first :) (Wink wink)
2:09:00 you've been doing so well Maggie that I'm hesitant to criticize. This was the wrong call. You should have gone down to where you were hearing Alice first and then coming this way. You didn't really miss much but judging by your play style missing even one tiny bit of lore is a tragedy
First two episodes you did great, but you're really starting to rush now. I've counted at least 4 times where you picked up one thing and just assumed that was all, leaving all sorts of resources on the ground (at one point I think you even missed a shotgun).
