Anyone have other budget items to add to the list? Let me know. Admittedly I did cut this down some, I know... Hard to believe it was actually longer than this!
DIY TRX using Husky Hangalls, caribiner or quick link, strapping and pvc pipe for handles cost me $24. 80lb sandbag cost approximately $35 using duffle bag, rubber mulch and gravel. Search for how-to on RUclips.
Great tips! People always seem to think they need 10-25k to build a home gym but you can do 80-90% of what you’d want to do in a gym with a 1,000 set up.
I couldn't agree more about spending a good chunk of your budget on a great rack. I built my home gym with rack Halloween weekend 1993, and even then the majority of my money went to the rack and I never regretted it all the years I used it.
I bought my bumper plates right before COVID started and all that was left on Rogue were their bumper plates that cost ~$300/ 2 45lb plates. Spend ~$1,000 just on 45 plates… They are some of the best quality bumper plates I’ve seen tho. I really wanted to get those iron plates because I love that ringing sound when you lift.
We definitely appreciate all the hard work you have put in. I've been researching how to make my home gym as bad ass as possible amd you my friend have made my job A LOT easier. I thank you so much.
One thing I want to point out most people don’t think of when it comes to benches. People will see the “bench capacity” and equate it to how much they can lift, forgetting about their own body weight. Let’s say you weigh 200lbs. If the bench has a capacity of 300lbs, you can only lift 100lbs before it’s “over capacity”. A 250lb man would only be able to do 50lbs “safely”. I’ve watched too many people on RUclips/FB videos have their bench fail during a lift because they exceeded the limit. I’m sure some people would be fine. Just something to keep in mind. I think sand bags of different sizes (long bags with handles, strong man bags) could/should be included in the list. You can do a lot with them. Sand is also cheap I recently picked up approx 200lbs worth of sand for around 16 dollars + tax. Keep up the good content
@jokermann77 ... Good points on the cumulative weight capacity that can be overlooked, but can you link some of those failures where the bench themselves failed? I couldn’t find any but I do see many failed bench presses where the lifter would have been better off having safety pins or a spotter.
@@strawberryyogurt0 I never found them by looking specifically for them. They always showed up in compilation videos on YT/FB. I’ll try and see if I can find a couple. One I remember specifically was a guy bought one off Amazon and was only doing like 120lbs or something relatively light and it crumpled underneath him. I immediately showed my wife and said “See this is why I didn’t want to cheap out on a bench”. I’ll see what I can find.
I did debate sand bags but I had to start cutting things out. This video was actually a decent amount longer than this originally. I was going to mention that point when I talked about the Amazon bench (375lbs is it?) but I guess I missed it. Thanks for mentioning it.
Lol, two of the racks are now sold out. Used this video to choose a lot of my stuff-- the rep adjustable bench, boneyard bar, fitness reality rack. REP has some bumpers that seem comparable in price to Titan, since I'm already shipping something from them figured I'd go for it. Definitely the most up to date info I could find on youtube, thanks dude!
I can't agree enough about picking the right rack being so important. I have a Marcy Smith machine that I bought from Sam's Club. Before that, I had a Weider rack from Sam's Club. The Weider had pin safeties. The smith machine has nothing. When I use anything more than 160lbs on the external j-cups, they stick and mess up the lift off. Never even heard of Titan, Rep, or Rogue when I bought them
I watched this while I was ordering a $600 adjustable bench. Hey, I can cut corners on the rest of the equipment, right? Right? Don’t forget to mention buying used equipment. I started my gym with a used ironmaster pro bench set and barbell for about $400 . People buy things and change their minds pretty often . Nice video! I’d love to see a video on preacher curl benches and or rack attachments.
Great video, but one thing that's always overlooked in garage gyms is the slope in the floor itself. Most will need to build their own platform to compensate for the slope aka more costs.
Thank you! It's hard to hit all the points and I have a record of making these too long! I did have another person mention leveling their platform so apparently this happens more than I have it credit for!
There is an alternate approach here. In fact make that two alternatives. The first is to scour the second hand market. This process takes longer than buying new but would make the budget go further. The other alternative I would like to see you explore is to exclude the rack entirely. There! I’ve said it! That leaves room for a set of loadable dumbbells, a sandbag or two plus a landmine piece (to be anchored by the weight plates) PLUS, wait for it…a Viking press 😊 Both the landmine and the sandbags give a heap of options to compensate for not being able to do barbell squats whilst the loadable dumbbells cover bench presses along with lots of other exercises.
Just found your channel and glad I did, i watch coop as well. I'm leaning hard to getting Rogue Y-2 & working from that. Based on size of my garage, being able to move it regularly and not have it bolted to the wall or floor, looks to be my sweet spot. Really do enjoy what you're doing, ty.
I have a Titan T3 and am very happy with it. Buy the 36" depth if you have the space... I agonized over that detail and I'm so glad I bought deeper. So much easier to work in the rack. I also have the Rep FB4000 and am very happy with that as well. I'm always hear the raves for the FB-5000 but it seems like overkill and overbuying for 99 percent of us. Either way, great vid with a range of choices at the lower price points.
My rack is Titan as well, X-2 I think but it’s short enough for my 87” ceiling and the price and quality were right. I added a lat pulldown to it, even though it’s not supposed to fit I made it fit. Hey, space is at a premium for me to I try to cram as much utility as possible into every square inch!
The flybird adjustable bench is pretty good for $160 on amazon with a $25 coupon code making it only $135, it’s adjustable and has a weight capacity of 700lbs

explored a Boneyard for a second bar but given shipping, tax, etc. decided to get a LUXIAOJUN barbell @ $218 all in after good reviews by Brandon Campbell. Solid so far
I've heard a lot about that bar and my buddy has one but I haven't gotten over there to workout in a few months. I'll have to check it out. Brandon comments on this channel quite a bit and I like his stuff so if he's recommending it I'd listen.
@@GlucksGym Agreed, without Brandon's review probably wouldn't have bought in favor of a boneyard. Since this is a second bar (to a Cerakote Ohio), could have afforded to take a little more risk. $218 all in is hard to beat
And it only took me tons of hours to research and make! Haha thanks. I'll do an updated version next year but it still holds pretty true (though prices have changed)
Got myself a set of LuXiaoJun bumpers to supplement my Fitness Reality plates. Went with the 10/25/45 set (160lbs) for a total of $309 shipped. Very happy with the quality, especially at less than $2/lb
I would also recommend looking for companies in your area. Sometimes they'll provide a discount if you buy in bulk and they may offer pick up which will save you on shipping. I found Perform Better in Rhode Island (I live in MA) and saved so much going this route with them.
How does this guy only have 6k subscribers?! Came across these videos and just assumed he was a big youtuber because of the quality of video. Great advise and really entertaining 👍 subscribed straight away 🤘
I purchased several things from titan at the start of Covid. I’m happy with their power bar, and it’s half of rogue. Their adjustable bench is pretty good and $75 less than the rep. I do prefer the Rep standard plates though. Nice vid!
For a two car garage where we want to park one car. How big of a flooring area should be for a Rogue RML-690C, land mine, Adjustable dumbbells (Iron Master)? 12x12? I would prefer even multiples for 8x4 plywood and 4x6 stall mat. I think 8x12 may be good actually - three plywood boards per layer and four stall mats. Shelving for miscellaneous can just be on concrete. Also, what is a cheap barbell you would use for landmines?
Depends what's cheap to you but the beast by cap would be a good candidate. I link and talk about it in the under $1k video. My area (similar size rack) is 10'x 12'. The extra 2' is the space to the side of the rack so I can get the weights on and off easily. The landmine will force you to use a little more length depending how you mount it and use it and your platform. Mine floor is entirely horse mat throughout the gym but you can buy more of those whenever.
@@GlucksGym Thanks. I will check out the beast. The area on either side of the rack will be more than 12’ even if there is no lifting platform there. It is actually a three car garage, so I have as much room as needed actually. I guess I can expand the floor if I find it needed. Would love to have a dedicated shed, but that is more money I don’t need to spend.
@@markhalstead2386 I pushed mine to the corner of my 3 car garage so I had to worry about the side space. I also made my platform 5' of free space in the back so I don't feel so cramped. I just checked it's actually 12'4" from the wall to the end of the platform. My weights push the rack back a little hence the odd measurement.
@@GlucksGym Good idea. The deep dish 45s will extend past the back of the rack. I was putting mine away from the wall so I can get to the shelving along the walls. I will have plenty of space. Will probably bolt it to the plywood.
@@markhalstead2386 that's such a big sturdy rack the plywood should be fine. My area is kind of restricted to 10' so I had to get creative. That's a sick rack!
I figured out your mistake. When you photoshopped in the jump rope you forgot about the reflection in the mirror. Nearly got me! Other than that it was was very realistic.
Hello, I was already looking at those mirrors from Home Depot today. How’s the quality of the mirror? I’m opening up a fitness studio soon and I don’t know if I should get the real “gym mirrors” as they might be thicker or be more tempered, but I’d like to get the homes from Home Depot to save some money. What do you think?
I’ve had nothing but problems dealing with titan fitness. I would rather pay more and not have to dealing with the headache that is Titans customer service. I have literally never ordered a product and had it show up even close to on time. Half the time I just cancelled my order because they just keep giving me the run around.
They can be hit or miss with certain products (as seen on some of my other videos). I've gotten much more good than bad but there are some things I avoid from them.
I've found single hole attachments tend to work pretty well but multi hole ones don't always. Their spacing can be slightly different. My titan attachments work well with my rogue but I've heard it doesn't always work the other way around. I'd search for the exact setup first and see if anyone on reddit or somewhere has done the exact swap you're debating.
It's actually not a bad rack. If you watch my PR-4000 video that's the rack we pull from my friends basement to swap to the Rep rack. My buddy squatted and benched over 400 in that thing. Was that pushing the limits, definitely but we kicked the crap outta that thing and it held up.
Flat bench with 350 lb capacity.....does that include my 200 lb body benching 275.....it would suck big time for the bench to give out while I'm under the bar
It includes your weight as well. You can see this bench a bit more in our video from last week (Building the Cheapest Possible Home Gym). I go over the max in that one but that's not me recommending you do so.
I've always put mine where its comfortable for me to be able to load and unload plates off the back. If you don't have plate storage just make sure you feel comfortable squatting up near the wall and that you can fit a spotter in there if needed.
Anyone have other budget items to add to the list? Let me know. Admittedly I did cut this down some, I know... Hard to believe it was actually longer than this!

And obviously, check your local Craigslist or Facebook marketplace everyday for used equipment.
Exactly!
Awesome video man! Thank you!
You're welcome. Thanks! Hope it helps.

How does this guy only have 6k subscribers?! Came across these videos and just assumed he was a big youtuber because of the quality of video. Great advise and really entertaining 👍 subscribed straight away 🤘
😢 Just go tell 94k of your closest friends and we'll be set!
I agree. He deserves way more subscribers and these are very in depth and good reviews.
Thank you! That first comment was 6k? Now 3 months later we're well into 11k! We're getting somewhere
This video is so helpful. You by chance working on a video with a 2k budget?
I am! Though it's $2500. Funny you asked I was literally just planning that one out.
@@GlucksGym hell yeah looking forward to it
Love the video, Gluck! What adjustable bench did you have in the background?
That's a Rep AB-5000 when I'm sitting with the 2 benches. At this point I've got a few more.
Pls keep this quality of video Gluck-9
This is an older one, I think the quality is better now 😊
I purchased several things from titan at the start of Covid. I’m happy with their power bar, and it’s half of rogue. Their adjustable bench is pretty good and $75 less than the rep. I do prefer the Rep standard plates though.
Nice vid!
Thanks! As long as they're working for you that's what matters. I've got some good Titan stuff and unfortunately have missed on a few
Same here, Rogue is overpriced but that doesn’t make it better than Titan.
I bought the hulkfit rack it’s decent
Decent is probably the best we can hope for in this range. I spent a lot of time looking at that one
I have a jump rope for 1€ and its really good
I figured out your mistake. When you photoshopped in the jump rope you forgot about the reflection in the mirror. Nearly got me! Other than that it was was very realistic.
Haha yes I did a great job with that one
Great content. Keep it up!
Thanks! We're slowly getting better at this haha
Never heard of someone complaining about the knurling being too aggressive lol
Hello, I was already looking at those mirrors from Home Depot today. How’s the quality of the mirror? I’m opening up a fitness studio soon and I don’t know if I should get the real “gym mirrors” as they might be thicker or be more tempered, but I’d like to get the homes from Home Depot to save some money. What do you think?
Did you sand the ply wood then paint it with something how is it so smooth and shiny lol?
The platform? It's 3 layers of oil based poly.
Its never a waste to invest in your body.
100% dead on
I’ve had nothing but problems dealing with titan fitness.
I was like : What the Gluck am I watching? Oh wait it’s another home gym vid
Oh no not this again!
Can you use Rouge Accessories, like spotter arms on Rep equipment , Racks and squat stands or vice versa ?
I've found single hole attachments tend to work pretty well but multi hole ones don't always. Their spacing can be slightly different. My titan attachments work well with my rogue but I've heard it doesn't always work the other way around. I'd search for the exact setup first and see if anyone on reddit or somewhere has done the exact swap you're debating.
Try a Vulcan 3 by 3 Flat bench Has a weight capacity of 2000lbs $140.
2:25 hey thats my barbell!
The beast?
@@GlucksGym yeah its alright ive had it for a few months and havnt had an issue, the knurling is def a bit messy on mine though
I really got clickbaited thinking this was a garadge gym reviews video
I wonder if they ever got the dumbbells back.......?
Unfortunately not
What about the titan t2 .. is it good enough…
It's actually not a bad rack. If you watch my PR-4000 video that's the rack we pull from my friends basement to swap to the Rep rack. My buddy squatted and benched over 400 in that thing. Was that pushing the limits, definitely but we kicked the crap outta that thing and it held up.
Rogue's fleck plates jumped from 140 to 166 for a pair of 45# not long after your vid
Everything seems to be moving up. I'm glad someone pointed out Rogue is doing it as well
@@GlucksGym mil spec still 131, same to time of your upload, rule of supply and demand...
@@ozziejin good to know. I'm about to convert this into an article so I'll have to update the items
How far from the wall should a power rack be?
I've always put mine where its comfortable for me to be able to load and unload plates off the back. If you don't have plate storage just make sure you feel comfortable squatting up near the wall and that you can fit a spotter in there if needed.
Hey gluck ever find the guy that stole your weights?
He still has some dumbbells as you can see from recent videos, we still don't have the full set
