It's not often I experience a paradigm shift during one of your videos (and I had my detractions formulated before it was half over), but the painting at about 11:20 followed by your insights at 12:00 completely reversed my opinion. And after the interview I realize this is someone I'd like to keep track of. Thanks Kate!
When one finds the artworks problematic, one reverts to talk about the gallery space. Metro Pictures gallery space looks fantastic and accommodating to show artwork. Thank you James and thank you Kate. From Down Under.
Hey @Michael Eccleston, since the beginning of the James Kalm Report, and the Rough Cut Channel, it has been my mission to show viewers more than just the "work of art". "The work of art" is merely the residue of a huge dynamic social structure. As Pierre Bourdieau theorizes, this is all a manifestation of a "field of cultural production", in which case for a more articulate understanding, the venue and and it's history are important factors to consider....
Another great exhibition and video, thank you James. I've surprised myself because I found I really loved the large blue minimal painting, it really pops out on the camera! Are the colours similar in real life as they are from the camera? I'm not one for minimal artwork but this one sings.....! Sorry James I've used terms that I hear you use, I hope you won't mind? Thank you and thank you Kate.
Yeah @Paul Lewey, the colors on camera are always problematic. If you notice, when the camera pans from one painting to another, there is sometimes a lag when the color shifts(?) I'm not a video tech, so I just catch what I can, and hope that over all the color's meld out to give viewers a pretty good idea of how they look in the gallery... As for the "terms" they're just the words we use here to talk about painting. Use what you want, and invent the words you need to express your ideas...
A riff, riff here and a riff, riff there. Here a riff, there a riff, every where a riff, riff. Andre Butzer whips out some riffs, E-I-E-I-O....watch out where you dance in the barn yard, y'all!
I prefer the black paintings. They seemed more provocative and had more depth than this color series. Perhaps I was attracted to the black series initially because they reminded me of B. Newman. I do appreciate the palettes on some of these and can see their playfullness, but overall they do not speak to me. Would love to hear from the artist himself and his intent. Thanks James&Kate!
After the first few minutes of the video It looks like Andrea Butzer has pared down all his earlier strengths of far grosser better crazy instincts a decade back into a more limited decorative set of concerns not so original - & disappointed. I never saw the earlier White on Black but they as described seem light weight. I was far more interested in his previous juicy paint handling, but lots of these look like a newly minted MFA German Minimal Conceptualist - & despite fresh flowing linear ideas using computer art as a layered take off point - -.just a bit more intelligible, with the squeezed tube these just more fun & layered sophisticated to large impulsive scale. He seems a bit stuck in this admittedly fresh light seductive feeling but not knowing how to evolve them to a more Solid visual statement. He doesn’t understand Matisse at all it’s just all fun & game Disney rip off with Koons core - just diagrammatic. If he would give vent to his original natural instincts he would find a way.. They are nice with pure backgrounds but lack angst. Okay but not excited.
Criticism, must an artist be so concerned on what country they are from because we are all a product of our society and find beauty from our surroundings.
Anyone wants a copy, I could knock one out very cheap in about two or three daze and NOBODY would ever know, unless you tell em I think you get my drift James Doe NY have anyone at all who are real artists ?
THANK YOU KATE!!!!
excellent show!
James and Kate.....thank you so much.......
Thank you Kate !!!

Without knowing all the art historical nuances I just love the warm feeling coming through in the paintings. Thanks for sharing

Thanks I was always fascinated with Butzer a bit of Klee,Kippenburger and something of Munch ,Exciting
Van Dolmatzis: I see some Marden and even hints of Newman's "zips" (if the latter weren't always strictly vertical in presentation, that is)
first time I've heard him talk. good stuff Mr. Kalm.
Excellent
The art is very interesting and colourfull

Hilarious and right to the Point Mr. Lawson.
Awesome video. Curious about the “Think in Pictures” group show at Amelchenko - the roster is certainly impressive
Lol just noticed you already hit it!*
The collars on the cartoon figures...Lutheran?
I also saw Dubuffet in there somewhere. Comparisons are annoying I know but can’t help it!
Andre says goodbye, I say hello.
Yes me too I guess he riffs well with those memories
Whoa! A return to form for Butzer?
The imagery in those doll paintings looks familiar, are they from a book?
the interview was a bit to short, Butzer was in a talking mood, you ran away to early

Jokes but they are not meant to be funny - how very german
David: One word: "schadenfreude"
wow these are terrible but good video
cartoon expressionism perhaps?
Painters' Painter.
Looks pretty rushed- all these paintings seem like they could use a couple more studio sessions.
Anyone wants a copy, I could knock one out very cheap in about two or three daze and NOBODY would ever know, unless you tell em
I think you get my drift James
Doe NY have anyone at all who are real artists ?
Glass house stones pot kettle black...got a bleedin nerve.
His work used to have so much energy and life ,what happened ..................shame .
I think naivety is and stay naive, it gets on my nerves to look at it and the whole histerical show arround it, whe really lost it.
SO OVERRATED.
Thank you Kate, thank you everybody.
