Prof. Hans Rosling died on February 17, 2017. Way too early. He had a genuine and unique way of presenting "boring" statistics in a way anybody can understand. Somewhat criticized for being _too positive_ he continued to show that the overall situation for many persons have become better. But with this presentation he showed that it came with a cost. A cost that our children will have to pay for, and we don't know whether there will be any grandchildren if this world order continues as it does today.
+Pontus Johansson I found out after reading your comment just now that he passed away... I have tears in my eyes... Why do good people have to go away so soon?
I mean, everyone dies eventually, and I think he lived his life as fully/positively as he could. It's super sad that he's gone, but the best thing to do is carry on his message and livelihood into your own life. It's thanks to people like Hans that the world is more educated and prosperous than it's ever been, so let's keep that trend going! Also worth noting that he didn't die from anything related to sword swallowing, it was pancreatic cancer.
Just recommended this one to a colleague - something I've done many times. This is the most spectacular close ever. May we all manage to make at least a fraction of the impact for good that he did.
This guy has very good information using his data. It's very true, it put a smile on my face when people are getting out of poverty. This is a must watch video, you need to learn about our world and the people in it.
He is trying to change our steryotype about developing countries and L.E.D.Cs. Developing countries are rising in the health and quality of live areas while L.E.D.Cs are doing well when compared to where they are coming from. He also makes important points about the development of any nation highlighting the importance of setting a goal of better health and culture and acheiving it through economic growth and governance.
Telling it like it is... this is why science is awesome. The best part about this is it gives a starting point for researchers to find trends in fast-developing countries, and to then apply those discoveries to countries that need help. Brilliant!
The reference of GDP per capita is misleading because this reveals nothing about the concentration of ownership of assets (i.e., land and capital goods and finance reserves) and income. A main reason for the decline in health and life expectancy in the United States is not difficult to comprehend. Income and wealth are increasingly concentrated, leaving a higher and higher portion of the population left with a subsistence level existence. This is not a result of some natural law but the fact that the U.S. system of law and taxation significantly benefits a "rent-seeking" minority over those who produce goods and provide needed services. The U.S. government keeps no statistics on the ownership of land. Roughly half of the land area is held by government at all levels. According to the best estimates of economists (e.g., Mason Gaffney, Fred Foldvary, Nicholas Tideman) who have studied land markets and ownership, over 95% of the LAND VALUE in the U.S. is held by fewer than 5% of the population, plus foreign nationals and corporate interests. For two-thirds of U.S. households the amount of land owned is that beneath a primary residence. If the property is within a high rise condominium their proportion of land ownership is nominal. And, of course, one-third of all households own no land at all. Their primary asset is likely to be an automobile. The connections are indisputable for anyone willing to think about our history and the ongoing movement of people from the land by force of one form or another. The solution is one in recent years put forward by former World Bank economist Joseph Stiglitz: change the way government raises revenue from the taxation of earned income, of capital goods and commerce and impose an annual tax on the potential rental value of land and land-like assets (e.g., the broadcast spectrum). This is the only real path to ending poverty in any country.

I have watched dozens of these TED Talks and this guy makes sense with his data. I realize that you can do anything you want with data, but when you look at the world, this is what you see, just not graphically represented. We need to get over egocentrism, the world is closing in.
well, he told us that the program is now working via web browser and that the databases are available online. if you want to quantify his claims... search for the link and just do it. the main subject of the talk was the new software that makes it possible for everyone to understand the numbers, he would want you to look the numbers up on your own if he got you interested in it.
reason for this faster social development in developing world is because, 1. Governments (not all) are spending more on healthcare and education. 2. Technology transfer from west + local R&D 3. Low cost - of living, education, transportation, communication, healthcare
Your point is relevant. In the US, any child born alive is counted at a live birth. In Many European countries, Sweden included, if a child is born weighing less than 500 grams, it is not counted as a live birth. Newborns less than 500 grams are more likely to die. So comparisons are not always apples to apples.
there are many people living in west just the same way, even worst. The reason for that is different. Also its a different topic by itself. What he is suggesting that is, developing countries are catching up faster than how developed nations did in the same time period with their available wealth, power and global influence.
Quite a good insight... economic power is the means but not the goal... But sadly, most of the ones power... sees these as the both the goal and means because of their greed and desire of maintaining the status quo... They better listen to this man, he's got a point...
Fantastic presentation! It´s a need to think about the climate change in the everyday life. What is progress and what will the cost be? What happens if everyone that is poor will adapt our way of life? How shall we change our way to live?
And that is the best argument for why we should seriously study our footprint on the natural world and begin our understanding by cutting "greenhouse gas" emissions drastically for a period of time to find the correlation between our actions and the world around us.
atmospheric composion of Mars: 95.72% CO2, avg temp:-46C. So maybe, yeah you have a model comparission; however, using "pollution" for GHG is ok because GHGs include CH4, N2O, and O3, all which are produced by industry. But I will try to be more specific in the future.
He should have been a salesman because he is very convincing naturally it's quite simplistic. Like Murphy said "If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something"

Thus, if you are calling the oceans and their contents "the ocean" then you are de facto admitting that human beings are also not just in heir environment but a part of it as well.
The rich get richer, and the poor get richer too. My father grew up in the 40's, and then poverty was poverty, where the health risks were exposure, lack of vaccinations, malnutrition, and exhaustion from overwork. Now the five biggest health risks to America's "poor" are ALL obesity & smoking related diseases and child vaccinations are often provided free at government schools. Today's average poor family has housing, refrigerator, stove, air con, heating, TV's, cell phones, etc.
Excellent! Wonderful! I liked the presentation! Facts! Disputable, re-testable, provable facts! Yes I think the term is relative poverty.Obesity and smoking is more prominent amongst those with very low incomes but I think people on relatively good incomes also have these problems.A global ban on smoking/tobacco products would help people in the Western societies and since the tobacco companies are actively targeting people in developing/third world countries, and aiming their campaigns specifically at younger people a global ban would make the world a healthier place.
Stunning Final!! However I must partially disagree on India's PM CO2 statement. CO2 per Capita is baised towards the countries with high population growth rate, like India. @rurede4dis It was an argument for his theory. He said that the seamingly (sorry for bad english) possible is possible. That means that just because you havn't seen it, it doesn't have to be impossible. Just because you havn't seen a man swallow a sword, doesn't mean it's impossible to do so. In other words, he is saying that we can change the world, even though it looks pretty bad.
I'm from a so called emerging country, Brazil. If you check the HDI of my country today, it's not very diffrent from an average european country forty years ago. What I do know is that there are a great number of prestigious scenists that say CO2 does do 'shit', and despite humanities dependence on oil, the international community agrees with them.
You make a good point. Is it sensible to represent the USA only one bubble when it's clear that the society is better represented economically by two separate bubbles? Averages mean little whenever the underlying distribution is bimodal.

$2.5 TRILLION might have helped us get from point A to B. Re. 5% CO2 contribution of humans. I could think of lots of things to put in your bathwater where a 1-5% increase would be the diff. between your being uncomfortable & having your skin burned off. The % is irrelevant. There are dangerous thresholds that may not be reached except with our contribution. No matter how small.
The only knowledge I need is that the money was coerceively removed from other people. The people manageing that money doesn't of how good quality nor how much it will cost because it is not their personal money with emotional association of hardwork and assurance of value in return for their property is given because they don't get anything. I don't need to know the numbers to understand the human mind!

It really seems like this is the only RUclips video where MOST of the commenters aren't posting ideological rubbish and saying stupid shit like "this guy is lying because he's socialist/capitalist". Is it because most people who would watch this video are smarter than the average youtuber or is it because Hans rosling's presentation is so amazing it shuts all the partisan flamebreathers and pessimists down?
Render unto Caesar that which is Caesars. The idea of the state and government is that it's the biggest protection racket in town. If you pay for state protection then if anyone starts any trouble a bunch of heavies show up and sorts it out. I'd rather the rule of law than mafia.
God! I love the Scandinavians!
What a man!
this guy is great!!!
