    If of those officers who supported Bamaiyi during the PRC succession meeting were Aziza, Magashi and Malu. This only appears to me that Bamaiyi may have truly plotted a coup against Abacha in 1997.

    • @VRed224
      @VRed224 4 месяца назад +1

      He did. Malu asked him during the tribunal for the plotters why it took several weeks before he reported the planned coup to Abacha. He didn't reply well. Diya knew about Bamaiyi's coup of a coup that's why he planned to arrest or eliminate him during the planning of the coup. Major Fasipe's statements and other evidences exist.
      Bamaiyi also planned to actually take over after Abacha's death, Mustapha prevented this because he never trust General Bamaiyi. Evidences of all of these exist.

    It's interesting to note how different General Bamaiyi's account of events differs from the version reported at the time.
    The reports at the time indicated that Bamaiyi had nominated himself to succeed Abacha at the meeting and it was other officers, led by then CNS Mike Akhigbe, who insisted on General Abdulsalaam Abubakar's succession in line with military hierarchy.
    Reportedly, as a result of these events, Bamaiyi was subsequently viewed with suspicion as an ever present threat to Abubakar's government whilst Akhigbe was appointed as Chief of General Staff.

    In a normal circumstance Bamaiyi was an influential figure in the Abacha government and when Abacha died he indeed had the capacity to seize power. Abdulsalami Abubakar had to be scared of him on normal ground since Bamaiyi is the man behind the military but he was very cautious not to retire him. I think the plan was well executed by Abdulsalami and other past head of state to get rid of Bamaiyi and finally deal with him in the new civilian government of Obasanjo which they did as Obasanjo indicted and remove him since he also actually supported Olu Falae who in disposition could have even be more better President than Obasanjo.

      @@chineduonuoha294 True, by strict military hierarchy, Abubakar was the next man in line. Succession has, however, not always followed military hierarchy or seniority as political considerations also come into play. For example, when Ironsi was killed in 1966, Brigadier Babafemi Ogundipe, as Chief of Staff, was the natural successor but this did not happen and Ironsi was succeeded by the more junior Gowon.
      Similarly, when Murtala Mohammed was killed ten years later, Obasanjo was not keen to succeed him and a troika had to be formed with Danjuma and Yaradua before Obasanjo accepted the HoS role.
