Yes, very nice. I visited an ancient temple also near Nim Binh. I used my phone to translate the Ancient Chinese inscriptions. It said it was a water temple. The Vietnamese guy I was with, did not realize you could use the phone to translate and was impressed that he could now use his phone to do the same. The religion seems to be a combination of Ancient Chinese, Buddhism and a strong catholic influence. Have you noticed how many cathedrals there is in the north and still being built. I did not realize this. Some are dated back to 1642. Amazing. Most families have a shrine to honour their ancestors.
Living the dream, Steve! Beautiful temple grounds. Ninh Binh is certainly on my itinerary. Hoa Lu appears to be the original capital of Viet Nam in 10th century (968 - 1009) during the Le dynasty. Wikipedia seems to say it's a combination of Buddhist and Daoist with 1,200 year old relics and traditions. Certainly a beautiful and fascinating place to visit!

Question Steve, what is the north Of Vietnam like during the burning season, TL is bad in most of the country during that period, i detest smog/smoke Ash Wednesday didn't help with that. Cheers.

vietnamese folk religion is ancestor worship, some of the king of the past are deified and worship as saint, Tran Hung Dao and the Hung Kings are some of the most recognized ones, if these are the patriarch of the Vietnam people there also another side that focus on the matriarch called "Đạo Mẫu" means Mother worship is a form of shamanism.
Ninh Bình is my "Quê" ! glad it has gotten more attention. Absolute beautiful province
