  • D2S Archives is a 2000's era Hip Hop time capsule that chronicles a culture at the brink of social media's reign, as well as the often under-appreciated Bay Area creative scene.
    The team will be posting raw and uncut footage from Distortion 2 Static, known to Bay Area heads as D2S, a Hip Hop TV show on-air from 2001-2011 via local San Francisco broadcast networks. Footage includes a range of conversations with both chart-topping legends and underground kings. In a pre-RUclips world, when local television still had some clout, Distortion 2 Static used original programming to cover Hip Hop culture with a depth of knowledge and respect. D2S offered a mirror for its community to feel seen.

    U can tell pharrell hates the neptunes signature sound which is feel like pharrell felt stuck n that style n sound which is why he started changing his production up towards the 3rd nerd album seeing sounds. With that album pharrell was running from that neptunes style. Wen he did he did the songs with draft punk n ronin thick n the happy n his second solo album. He really stripped that old neptunes sound. Came with a new sound. Songs like lemon and get loose and alright and stir fry With that Anthomy James brown type vibe to it. That's pharrell's new sound.

    • @MsTrueTy
      @MsTrueTy 5 лет назад +21

      Hate is a strong word i wouldnt say he hated the Neptune sound. But he did Hate The Neptune BOX that they tried to place and keep him in; and anyone connected to him in. He was trying to break the barriers of the industry back then (In my opinion he suceeded). Pharrell was a musician first and wanted to make Any and every kind of music and art possible. And they wanted him to stay in his Black hip hop lane. And he was like F Ya i do more then just Hip hop. I do Pop ish (like i love you) Country ish (provider) Rock, alternative fusion; hell i even make jewerly and clothes! Something they really frowned artist of color to do. He is the living Renaissance Man of our generation. And during this time he was fighting for the right to jump genre to genre. During a time where honestly All artist of all colors were boxed in by race, musical Genres and position in music. They wanted him to just produce and only produce hiphop. No singing,no rockband, no working in other genres of music, fashion cross overs, no movie scores no stay in your Lane! Thats what he kept hearing from the industry and im glad he was brave enough to ingore them and let them call him wierd for a time. That fearlessness and bravery to be himself made them legends. Pharrell thank you for fusing everything and changing the game. The Neptune finger print (or sometimes his own print chad and him dont do everything together) that begining 4 count or those really out of place bridges. Hell that piano line you hear from time to time. The signature will always be there....but he refuses to be stagnent; forever evolving. I respect him for always being true to himself and his craft. F a BRAND this is his Craft his heart. I love him and chad for what they did for Music and us as a people.

      This isn't true. It's just that they wanted NERD to be separate from The Neptunes. As they got older, they changed workstations, DAWs, setups etc. so "sounds" changed inevitably with that. Every NERD album sounds different. In Search Of has a late 60s, 70s aurora with a lot of synthfunk remnants. Fly or Die was more intimate, I believe, as Pharrell and Chad not only arranged & composed but also played every instrument aside from the guitaring by Lenny Kravitz & drumming by ?uestlove on "Maybe". Seeing Sounds was very alternative, retro, and synth pop-ish. Nothing was extremely organic, yet alt-pop. No One Ever Really Dies (which I personally was disappointed in aside from 3-4 tracks) was a nod to current pop culture. I believe Pharrell, in his mind (see what I did there), wanted his and Chad's work to be sort of like alter egos and at this particular moment, he was trying to disassociate himself from "The Neptunes" for the sake of "NERD".

      @aaron cole there's a lot of people that can manipulate that sound way better than he can. personally, I don't think he's that talented but to each their own. I think it's best to just let their sound be their sound and let it be a part of history.

    bs neptunes had a distinct sound. the 1st 5 secs of a track you knew it was neptunes or when you heard their snare or guitar it was a wrap. it was like they remixed everything from 99-'03 then they experimented more and even then they kept their old trademarks

    • @bladebrown4191

      because they work on feel rather than what listeners consider their sound. when people start analyzing their work and speaking in technical terms, it's irritating and can stifle the convo. when you make something that feels good, you use what got you there until you're moved to go somewhere else.

      Shay helps with arrangements and concept ideas on songs. Shay is also a producer. In an interview Pharrell said me and Chad go out there musically and sometimes it's all over the place story wise. Shay brings it back to earth and help makes it easy to understand.The Neptune's originally was a big group of people. They were a group first. It's just Pharrell and Chad got famous for beat making. And Shay is one of the few that hung in there. So when NERD finally got a chance to make music, it was a childhood dream come true. To finally be recognized as artist themselves. I think it's really Cool because these three guys are best friends. Shit Idc if my bestie just wanna play the tamberine let's make this money! But seriously Pharrell would get so mad when people assumed Shay or others didn't pull they weight. The problem was Interviewers back then couldn't differentiate NERD vs Neptunes. So they always asked about the Neptune's. Eventually he said Neptune's is a job to be done, NERD thats they original dream. That's where they as artist create what they want. And Shay is apart of that process. He isn't just there for the ride. He just could less about the fame part. In fact both Chad and Shay are on record stating they rather not be as big as Pharrell. They get to live they dreams, make music with they real friends and go home.
