Political movies were way better in the 50s through the 70s. “The Manchurian Candidate ‘62” is a classic with Frank Sinatra, Angela Lansbury, Janet Leigh, and Lawrence Harvey.
I think a large part of politics not being as prominent on the big screen is how prominent our reflection of real-life politics is on the small screen. From the Clinton era on, Saturday Night Live, the Daily Show, South Park and late night talk shows have been able to react and lampoon the stranger than fiction real life politics in real time that any movie trying to keep up with modern events will be months or years behind.
Good point. But good movies/shows avoid dating themselves. Their messages tend to be more timeless. For example, West Wing is still relevant today- not as a critique of current issues, but as an example of how to resolve them. The bi-partisan moments of that show are some of my favorite moments in tv history.

Studios are still trying to put out mass audience pleasers to rescue theater-going after the pandemic. They won't get controversial again for years if at all. High Noon was a great commentary on the Red Scare, friends abandoning friends. Another good political film was Redford's 2007 Lions For Lambs, where he's a professor discussing the Iraq War with Andrew Garfield.
Aside from this video's timely message about politics and moviemaking I have to point out the dramatic compressed vista at (6:36) -- Los Angeles and its amazing topography is something to remember. Especially for a tourist from Flatland.
Hollywood has given up on being creative. It’s run by the accountants and money managers. Not to mention that they’re all cowards now. There’s a few like Tarantino out there. Bit you can count them on one hand. Hollywood… R.I.P.

A Face in the Crowd was a great film, but too optimistic. Griffith's character, "Lonesome" Rhodes, ruined his career by insulting his followers over a mic he didn't know was hot. In reality, Donald Trump could do that and not lose a single vote.
Here is the prove, how making movies is worthy for the future generations to come, if you try to see these movies all over again, do you want to bet, nobody remembers anything of them? Therefore giving up freedom of expression is always a huge loss when... movies industry cares to stop because some politicians might.. look like actors and characters. Sometimes.. making profits is not the priority..but frankly, if anyone now would like to make a .. fantasy upon Twin Towers tragedy I would not like to see it. I still avoid movies based on war topics because too ...painful, it hurts so bad that you risk to become like poor veterans, suffering of post traumatic stress disorder only watching a movie based on ..real facts or look a like kind of facts. Looking back in time, well, there's a big emptiness of ...movie business since political scandals replaced the fiction on cinema screens.. a huge loss. Using web connection instead, made of every average user a movie maker, a film director, the political trend works at the contrary, on cinema screens mostly we care to see how McDonald's started, how Trump started his career, how CBS started, even Rupert Murdoch's story becomes more exciting than ...trying to target political leaders. We already had four years of Trump administration and.. none of his miracles happened...not even watching popping up a brand new Las Vegas every South American village...no way doing the ...big corporations interests or helping them improve their profits. It's not about welfare but how to mess up the others lives in order to have no welfare at all. True American capitalism that Republicans loved the most was... making money. Does it show Reagan ignoring the AIDS crisis for 7 years except to continuously cut funding for budgeting research? All because his administration said it was “killing the right people” and while he and Nancy totally ignored and abandoned their longtime friend Rock Hudson?
There are still “daring films of the past” still being made. I literally wrote an authentic Joe Biden biopic yesterday, and it tackles authoritarianism, hopelessness, death, tragedy, and mortality. Tell me where to submit it, studio execs, and I will.

The Truman Show is very relevant, because it showed how politics became its own bubble.

Well. It definitely explains why 90% of movies for the last 5 years are absolute crap. Hollywood needs to give the people what the people want.
audiences don’t know what they want, it’s the artists job to give them what they didn’t know they needed
Andy Griffith portrayal reminds me so much of trump and how he has fooled his followers.
I bet you are a Dem.
Lonesome Rhodes lost his support when he was caught insulting his audience.
Trump secretly loathes his MAGATS and they worship him more.
