Forget Xenoblade 2 being Nico's Game of 2022, his LP of that game was my favourite viewing experience of 2022.
Watching him slowly go from uncertain mild interest to truly enamoured to the point of shock was so rewarding as a fan of him and especially the game, knowing full well it's qualities are indeed that damn good it's just a shame so many others have missed out because they did indeed judged the book by it's cover.
It shouldn't be a situation where that LP validated my own feelings, cause I never doubted how much I love the cast, the story, the depth, the world, the gameplay & so on despite the many flaws but just something about that development in Nico's engagement, admiration and wonder is about the closest I'll ever get to reliving the game fresh and coming out of it with the same amount of love made it such a memorable time as a viewer and I'm thankful to Nico for that.
Hopefully it sparked others to try it themselves cause it really is something special.

Based Xenoblade 2 pick. It's honestly my favorite in the series. The more I think about that game, the better it gets, and the more I appreciate it. Rex's line, "If it means I can put a smile on people's faces, then that is my role in this world," really hit me hard. Ever since I beat Xenoblade 2, I have lived my life doing my best just making the people around me smile.

Nico's love of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is so beautiful to witness. I remember seeing his first video of it, hearing how hesitant he was during those first few episodes. And then watching him fall in love with the story. Xenoblade 2 is such a gorgeous mess of a game, and I'm so happy Nico and many others now get to see it. It's just the perfectly flawed gamed. There's so much wrong with it, but you can overturn all of it because this game is JUST fucking gorgeous.

  • @skieth9999

In my opinion, the reason Rex is so endearing is that while Shulk is likeable as someone the player might be friends with, Rex is likeable in the way you'd want your own kid to be. It's like watching your kid relative or your own child go on an adventure and you just want the best for them

I'm of the same mind Nico. I love XBC3, but XBC2 still remains my favorite of the trilogy.
    XBC1 has the best world.
XBC3 has the best party chemistry and overall gameplay mechanics.
But to me, XBC2 has the best individual character arcs, the best overall narrative, the best antagonists, the best music, and one of my favorite combat systems in any JRPG.
Its probably going to be an unpopular take at the end of the day...people tend to have...STRONG opinions about Xenoblade Chronicles 2, but at the end of the day its all subjective and what rings true for each and every one of us, and for me, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is the one that resonated with me the most.

And really I think it depends on the person if they prefer to take the good with the bad, or not. XC3 is a more consistently good XC1 and my personal favorite. There's a phenomenal Kotaku article about the Xeno series (going back to gears and up to Blade 3) about the broad overarching themes of the series and one of the things that stuck out to me about 2 is how the entire idea of Blades and Drivers goes hand in hand with the theme of Love in the Xeno series. In a series so laden with judeo-christian spiritual imagery and ideas, love is a recurring theme because the whole point is that that's where we truly find succor and grace in our lives.
The concept of a 'Driver' is not just the person a Blade gives super powers to but also just the idea that you don't just live for yourself, you live for others. In Klaus' time, people lived only for themselves. Klaus himself sought salvation in an otherworldly power. But the world he creates embodies the lessons he's learned: that you find your best self in the service of others, that you find your greatest happiness in being vulnerable to others and accepting the vulnerability of others with understanding. Jin never wielded Malos' Monado, but he did help a friend (or more) to heal and find a goal again, and vice versa.

  • @skieth9999
    @skieth9999 Год назад +30

I think what makes the cast of 3 so great is a lot of what made the cast of 2 great but with better and more consistent writing: they fulfill tropes but the ascend past them by justifying their own tropes.
Taion is an overly studious know-it-all because it's overly cautious and scared to death of losing the ones he loves
Sena is a peppy muscle girl specifically to try to over-compensate for her lack of confidence in being part of her own team
Lanz is a bulky musclehead but because he's afraid of confronting the reality of a directionless existence and deciding his own fate.
Even the optional Hero characters are as well written as the main cast of otherJRPGs. I'd go as far as saying they're as well written as the main casts of 1 and 2

XC 2 is also my favorite Xenoblade game. I guess what hooked me the most was the amount of content, the soundtrack and the addictiveness of the gameplay loop of that game, but I definitely also liked the story and heart-to-hearts. I'm kinda intimidated to get back into it since I haven't even touched any of the DLC aside from the Torna campaign, and I know it's going to suck me in again and make me spend over 150+ hours, and that doesn't even include the New Game Plus. Still, it will happen someday. I just love this game so much.

Honestly I think Xeno 2 is such an incredible game Because of the weird lows that it has.
Xeno 3 as its base is an amazing game, the average in the game is set to great with only a few dips in quality. Noah as a character is fantastic...BUT unlike Shulk and Rex, Noah weirdly doesn't go through as many struggles as the other MC's. He really only has 3 struggles throughout the entire game. The first was saving colony 4 by destroying the flame clock. Noah honestly feared that destroying the clock might kill everyone connected to it.
The second one was with him no being able to understand Mio's fears about running out of time.
And the third is obviously chapter 5 when he was trapped for a month of prison and was waiting for mio to die.
Even with Crys there wasn't really any struggle as Noah had already reached the end of his character development and was simply showing his answer to his friend/mentor.
With Rex though, he went through so much throughout the entire game. From lose after lose, Rex was forced to keep growing.
Rex's entire wasn't about gaining strength, but learning to accept people. He didn't have to be the one to save everyone, he just needed to believe in his friends and accept their help.

I hope Nico checks out the Trails series in the future. It has everything he loves in spades: fantastic characters, interesting villains, fascinating lore, fun battle system, insane music, tons of emotional moments, npcs that make the world feel lived in as well as npcs that make you care about their personal stories, as well as overarching narrative between the games that's so worth experiencing. I can't sing this series praises enough. Xenoblade and Yakuza are the only games that even come close to matching my ever growing adoration and I only "finished" the series last year in terms of western releases.
Its like with KH in that you want to play them in release order to get the full appreciation. Start with Trails in the Sky, than Sky SC, Sky the Third, Trails from Zero, Trails to Azure, than Cold Steel 1 through 4. I'd also greatly recommend the originals instead of the evolution versions. One last thing to mention, yeah it would be a long series that imo is absolutely worth the time investment but have no fear... every game comes with a Turbo function that allows you to speed through previously visited areas and random battles significantly reducing the amount of time spent doing random bs.
With how much you love Xenoblade this series seems like a no brainer to me. The games don't get English voice acting until Cold Steel but that just gives lots of opportunities for ad libs and flexing your multitude of voices. It's a series that I have only recently discovered and holy hell can I not sing its praises enough... it's such a wonderful adventure and one that if you even remotely like JRPGS you won't be disappointed. I know it'll probably never happen but hey I have to at least try xD

As silly as it may be wanting your opinion of a videogame to be validated by content creators online, I am incredibly happy to see XC2 come back from the past and take the #1 spot of this 2022 toplist.
It should come to no one's surprise that this is the mainline Xenoblade Chronicles game with the most controversy surrounding it. As you have highlighted it has many problems that many people just cannot look past, not seeing the core of it, which is just incredible. XC3 is a fantastic game in its own right, but XC2 does the things that matter the most to me in a story-heavy game so much better and it's great to see others acknowledging this proverbial diamond in the rough like this.

Xenoblade 2 versus Xenoblade 3 is definitely an interesting comparison, since 3 definitely feels like the kind of game that was made with a lot of the criticisms of 2 in mind, not to spite the previous game, but simply because it does make sense when you have the time to do so to fix what enough people deem to be a game's shortcomings in a sequel. The costumes were weird, the tutorials were bad, the voice acting was dodgy, the tone could be inconsistent, the UI had issues, the plot took a while to get going. Generally valid critiques, and ones that were addressed well in the sequel. And on the whole 3 is probably the most consistent game in the trilogy*, compared to 1 starting strong and having some peaks and valleys, and 2 being much more of a slow burn but gradually ramping itself up. But, in some ways a 100+ hour game can arguably be too "consistent" to the point where by the end of it you might not have as many takeaways as that of a game that was a bit more of an uneven ride.
Not to say that 3 didn't have its strong moments, but in some ways it is kind of like a really good five course meal where you're already feeling full by the third course but the food is so good you gotta keep eating even if you know you'll have a huge stomachache later. 2 is like a restaurant where you're not sure about these appetizers, the waiter is taking too long to refill your drinks, but the main course is just so AMAZING you feel like you might cry from each bite, and long after that meal even the weaker parts of it will make a memorable part of the story surrounding it. Overall I might still need time to decide which was my favorite Xenoblade between the two. I think 1 might still be my favorite overall but part of that was also being there when it came out and what a big deal that was at the time. Either way though hopefully if the series does continue it'll continue to strike good a balance between memorable experiences and improving on what came before, rather than either becoming too inconsistent or too sterile.

It's funny how sometimes a game just needs to do one thing in a way that really hits you, and it makes you love it no matter the flaws. For Nico, it's Xenoblade 2 and its villains. For me (for Xenoblade 2), it's its theme of existentialism and learning to have a reason to want to exist in the world. It's just told so earnestly and chooses to be optimistic even when exposed to the nihilistic reality of human suffering. It says "Yeah, we know things can suck. But we still think the world is worth living in, and that we can make things better." It really is the kind of message we need in this decade.

Nice top 5. I still need to play Neo TWEWY and I am not sure if I'll play Elden Ring. But I agree with you. Xenoblade 2 is a game that you can't judge by the cover. If you put aside what a lot of people would judge the game by, but this is some of Takahashi's best writing in terms of character writing, especially the villains, and the female characters in this game are all amazing. Lora, Mythra, Pyra, Haze, Pandoria, Nia, Morag, Poppi for JRPGs there are very few games that even come close. I am waiting for a Poppi QT Pi figure. I will throw money at it. And, after having played 3, I still like 2's battle system more because 2 has a lot more flexibility for builds than 2. Chain attacks are also a huge improvement from 3.
My favorite part is people brush Jin aside as an edgy character and just ignore his speech when you encounter him on Temperantia, but then you realize he actually meant it. It wasn't edgy rambling, it's actually what he meant but the player and Rex had no context as to what he was talking about. It's only later when you go back and view that scene and you realize a lot of what he said was right and it's very clear why he took the actions he did. It's great stuff.

Nice to see goodboy Kirbo getting some love. Feel like a lot of people overlook him for not being seen as one of the "top shelf" Nintendo franchises, but while there have been some mid games in the series when it's good it's GOOD. Glad to see that RTDR is getting a remaster this year, though I'll admit I would have loved if they could have somehow done both 3DS entries as well, because goddamn is Robobot peak Kirby.

Nia: I didn’t know if Nico would count it since it came out years ago, but I’m happy we won!
Rex: I thought Nico hated me for my stupid pants, but once I got my new drip, it all changed for the better!
Pyra: At least he warmed up to Mio and her friends quickly. Probably helped that their designs were more normal.
Jin: Our villains are definitely better than XC3’s Moebius.
    Malos: INDEED!

It's the Xenoblade with the best movement, the best exploration, the best sidequests, the best (and only playable) mechs, the best (and only) multiplayer mode and the best customization. It also has absolutely stellar lore and worldbuilding and the soundtrack, while a departure from the rest of the series, is also amazing in its own right. Also it has the best and most memorable unique monsters. And did I mention it has my absolute favourite open world of all time which you can explore in its entirety without a single load time while being bigger and more vibrant than most other open worlds and being on the freaking Wii U?
Oh and also the enemy design is pure gold. Saltats have yet to be topped, and the inclusion of a bestiary delving deeper into the lore and biology of each monsters was a really neat idea that I'm sad was never tried again in any other Xenoblade.

For me xenoblade 3 is the best in the series just cause the story, characters, heroes, gameplay and so much more is so amazing. Especially since it gave me a main cast a care about so much, Ethel who literally became my fav xenoblade character and a lot of the other heroes. What a amazing journey and I’m glad I saved my play through of it when I did since it’s such a special game. That goes to show tho that all the main xenoblade games are incredible

One thing I always find funny about people who criticize Xenoblade 2 is calling it "generic" and "filled with tropes and cliches" when, in reality, the story and the way the characters, especially the antagonists, are handled are very unique not just for JRPG's, but RPG's in general. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is just fantastic all around, although IMO not as many highs as Xenoblade 2 in terms of story. Really, I don't like comparing 2 and 3 because they are both among the best RPG's ever made, but I do feel like 2 edges it out by a decent bit for me as well.

I definitely think that Xenoblade 2 is the most repayable for fast combat if you know how to optimize, and yeah the characters are phenomenal in xc2, but definitely for a "this year game" xc3 is my top #1 but Xc2 is definitely the best Xenoblade Chronicles game hands down, I've shed so many tears, smiled so many times, and both hated yet sympathized for all the villains of xc2..
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is definitely one of the best games of the last 10 years as a whole, the main characters are genuinely so well written and if the voice acting was better I'm sure many more people would agree, but sticking it out I've played the game like 6 times now and it never gets old.

Favorite game I played this year is an indie game called Our Life: Beginnings and Always. It's basically a dating visual novel came with tons of customization (for your char you create). It came out last year, but I got it this year on Steam after hearing about the Wedding DLC content. It's easily going to make my fav games list. I also FINALLY got around to playing 13 Sentinels and I loved it also. My biggest concern was the combat since I normally hate tower defense games, but since I put the game on easy mode, the fighting (while still my least favorite part) was still fun at times and never a chore.
As far as the games you mentioned, I haven't played any of them, but I do want to get Kirby. It's just there were other games I wanted to play more and with a good number of games coming out this year that I really want, it still may be awhile before I get Forgotten Lands. Only Kirby game I ever played was NES's Return to Dreamland and I really enjoyed it.
Now as far as 2023 goes, the big game I am 100% going to get is the next Zelda game. I also am going to get Spike Chunsoft's next game, Rain Code, and the other game I plan on getting is a farming sim game called Story of Seasons: It's a Wonderful Life. I don't know if this game will come out this year, but I am hoping for the next Our Life game will come out.
I can't wait to see what you do play this year Nico, besides the obvious Zelda game I mentioned lol. My biggest wonder is if you'll play another Zelda game before Tears of the Kingdom will come out. I am also hoping you'll play Rain Code too.
