Bri, can you advise me: it's now May 7, in NC (where it's warm and will get hot soon). I'm removing a big patch of privet, and I've been told northern sea oats would be good to plant there, to stop the poison ivy and Japanese honeysuckle from taking over once the privet is gone. However, I read you only plant this in early spring or late fall -- and here it is May. Should I still give it a try? And should I do seed or plugs? I won't be able to keep it watered, since it's in my HOA common area and there's no hose there. Is there any hope? Thanks, Rah in Durham, NC
Hi Bri, Thanks so much for all you share with the world! Question about these Northern Sea Oats, I grew from seed last year, and as expected, in their first year they were not super productive. Now these plants will be 2 years old this year, is ok to divide them, or will that stunt their production? I'd rather have a few more robust plants than many not as robust plants. Thank you!
This plant has become a nuisance in my garden, spreading everywhere. They are beautiful but they are like a spreading bamboo to me, thick stems and hard to dig out once established. How do you use these in a bouquet and at what point are they harvested?
Prairie Moon Nursery is very reliable and their seeds are on sale. Plus they give a lot of valuable information. Look under the name Chasmanthium latifolium. They have several common names like Northern Sea Oats, River Oats, etc 😀
I've never had any animal or other pests eat this plant. It is a lovely hardy grass. Beware it will spread and reseed itself. Its not a problem to dig up the new shoots and replant or give them away. In my garden it grown about three feet high😊
Gorgeous native
I love this so much and now have the seeds. Can’t wait to get them started!
Awesome! I’m going to look for seeds to get some started. Just the ticket for an area of my yard.
May your seeds be plump

Have you grown Rose Red Soba Buckwheat? if so, would you plant it as a wildflower or an ornamental grass?
My entire back hill side covered. 40 feet x 15 feet. Spreads and spreads. Like get rid it?
Great info! Do you have a recommendation on a good source to buy seeds of this grass?

Does anyone know if rabbits will eat the young leaves of this grass since they seem to like grassy plants?
