There isn't a single filmed version of Conan Doyle's stories faithful to them. All we get are rough approximations. Liberties are always taken. Abbreviations and merging of events. Reading of the stories is irreplaceable. Then the voices are heard in one's own mind and the nuances of them are one's own. The potential imagery induced thereby, I suppose, will mean all visual reproductions in film must be more or less disappointing or not synchronous with expectation. I applaud those film versions not making Watson an idiot. Nor Holmes a peculiar and hyper-eccentric individual. I'm afraid I can't even listen to audio books of these masterpieces. I've been spoilt by reading them.
