    Your videos are fantastic. I have a small camper here in Ireland from the 1960's that I'm planning to renovate soon. It's in really bad shape so I'm hoping to remove the skins and do a complete rebuild. Your channel will be invaluable for figuring out how to do it. Thanks so much!

      Sounds like a great project! I've never worked on a European camper, but I can't imagine they were much differently built than ours. Let me know if you have any questions, and thanks for watching!

    That old wood ladder reminds me of a ladderI I had years ago.Seeing you up on it and it going back and forth brings back the memories of the painful times it threw me on the ground .The last time it threw me I took my saw and cut it up and hauled it to the dump.Be careful.

      It seems everyone's got a rickety ladder story or two! They're kinda like wooden roller coasters.

    Looking forward to watching you rebuild this. It was fun watching you tear this apart. I am hoping to start my remo of my 61 Shasta piece meal this summer. At least to see how much rot I have a side at a time. I am in Eastern Canada and do not have a garage to work in so I do have my good tarp that Larry recommends ready to go. Wishing you all the best~

    Just curious as to how much support you get from your wife during the rebuild stage.Does she support you more when the rebuild is done and you’re out camping?

      Well, she's sort of the whole reason we do this, and she's the one that edits the videos and runs the Instagram and our photo booth business, so I would say she's more integral to the process than merely supportive of it!

      @@Techstriker1 yeah, sometimes if someone's smeared a bunch of caulk on your windows they can be pretty glued down, which surprising considering what a lousy job caulk does at keeping water out.

    One thing about your video's you always have the sun to your back and not into the camera and use a tri pod when you can, great video's as always

    • @TrailerTrashtoTreasure
      @TrailerTrashtoTreasure  Год назад

      Thanks! I usually try to keep from having to look straight into the sun when I'm recording so my face isn't all squinty. I also really hate seeing the shadow of the camera in the shot, but sometimes I just don't notice it. Honestly I always feel a bit bad for not focusing a little more on the cinematography of what I'm doing, lol!

    Shasta used to put putty tape under the fold over too. But they also put putty tape under the J Rail. You can get half inch putty tape from vintage trailer gaskets dot you know what. It really does a great job of sealing. By the way, I think it's a good idea to take the walls down intact and keep them around until you are finished in case you need to look at something or compare something. Your Scout was right on the edge of making a decision, piece meal or full frame off rebuild.

    • @TrailerTrashtoTreasure
      @TrailerTrashtoTreasure  Год назад

      Say that reminds me of something I've been meaning to ask. Is there a substantive difference between butyl tape and putty tape? I sort of gather that putty tape isn't as gooey and won't "flow" as much in the heat of summer, but is there a major negative to using butyl in place of putty?
      And yeah I keep the curbside wall intact. The streetside wall was too broken and eaten up by insects to hold together in one piece.

    • @mobiltec
      @mobiltec Год назад +1

      @@TrailerTrashtoTreasure Butyl tape is the soft gooey stuff and is usually black or yellow in color. Putty tape is gray and more solid with crinkly paper and you should get it from Vintage Trailer Gaskets dot you know what. Putty tape is used with a fold over roof and J Rail. Butyl tape is used for Corner Cap rail or Top Edge molding. Manufacturers who use corner cap rail will usually use the gooey butyl for the windows as well.

    • @TrailerTrashtoTreasure
      @TrailerTrashtoTreasure  Год назад

      Interesting. My local trailer supply company has only ever had what they call butyl tape, but it's always been gray and is sometimes crinkle wrapped and sometimes wrapped with flat waxy paper. Sometimes it's pretty sticky, but sometimes not. Seems inconsistent to me, but it's all done a good job of sealing.

    • @mobiltec
      @mobiltec Год назад +1

      @@TrailerTrashtoTreasure And that is because the guy you talked to has no idea what he is talking about even though he is in the industry. THOSE PEOPLE do not deal with putty tape. What you saw that had flat and waxy paper is BUTYL... Vintage Trailer Gaskets dot you know what sells it the lowest price and it's always fresh. Tell Robert, the owner, that Mobiltec sent ya.

    It’s awesome we have someone in town into old campers. You are doing it the right way. Looks good. I just bought a metzendorf 1960. Boy it’s a mess. You finding anyone in town that manufactures skin? Figured with Wichita being the air capital someone would be manufacturing aluminum siding.
    Anyway great work.

    • @TrailerTrashtoTreasure
      @TrailerTrashtoTreasure  Год назад

      Hey, sounds like a fun project! To my knowledge there's no one in town that specializes in vintage camper siding; although, there are several shops that could custom make some siding for you, but custom usually means expensive. There are several places you could order siding from though, and the freight isn't too bad on it. I've ordered from Hemet Valley RV in California, but I've heard people talk about Mac's Aluminum in Oklahoma, and also The Metal Company in Arvada, CO.

      Get yourself an inexpensive cutoff tool with a thin cutting disc from somewhere like Harbor Freight. You don't need to try and cut the heads off, but just cut a small groove on each one, and then use a big flathead screwdriver to work them out. It works almost every time, good luck!

    Is it worth rebuilding with a thicker wood to make it stronger?

    • @TrailerTrashtoTreasure
      @TrailerTrashtoTreasure  Год назад

      Generally speaking no. What causes these campers to fail structurally is usually rot. They're plenty strong when they're taken care of and maintained properly, so thicker wood will just add weight.
      That being said, I usually find a few areas where it doesn't hurt to add a little bracing in the walls to better support some of the cabinetry or other things attached to them. And sometimes you'll find the walls made of 1/8" ply which I usually switch to 1/4"; it's a bit stronger, but mostly it's more durable without weighing too much extra.
