    Those wagons are indestructible. I drove one in Med School, I even used it for long travels to Samar on dirt roads. In 2013 typhoon Yolanda drowned it in storm surge and an uprooted mango tree fell on it. We left it alone for two months, but after draining it and replacing some parts, damn i was still able to use the car until I graduated med school. Great memories.

Not built for speed but for endurance and versatility of all types of terrains. Its been big part of my life like he's the 2nd me. Like the Tamarraw isnt complete without me or the driver.

    We also had a Tamaraw FX in the past but it was eventually retired and scrapped for good and later replaced due to age, corrosion, and poor maintenance. It was a standard wagon diesel version with no aircons except in the front part, vinyl seats, steel wheels, radio/cassete type entertainment system with 2 speakers and no power steering at all. It was riding like an owner type jeep.

    mags are always one of the first upgrades in a tamaraw fx, its like a free 2-3'' lift and the bigger tires help with ride comfort. you should have tried to find the 2c or 3c turbo diesel to review cause you can feel the difference with the turbo (it also helps with the sound problem inside in a way cause the turbo whistle fills the interior and personally i like the sound of a turbo) factorywise i think it outputs 75-80 hp but you can squeeze more horsepower and fun off the block if you plan to invest on it (i have the 2c turbo one and the engine block was bored, i have no idea what its horsepower is now (i forgot hehe as the previous owner was the one who had it bored and i dont think he told me) but its ok enough to keep up with modern suvs in normal driving conditions and overtaking small cars in uphills even while i have to haul sacks of vegetables in the back from time to time) Not to mention after riding the heck out of it youll still have a big smile on your face when fuelling up cause this thing has one of the most friendliest fuel economy for its age :) but in the long run id just take something like the innova in terms of comfort or driving somewhere like to the lowlands or around the expressway, (i find the fx is fun to drive around in baguio/benguet cause its cold here by default, but in the lowlands i find its uncomfortable inside cause its a microwave if you take it to the lowlands even if its just in la union even with the aircon to the max, a good window tint helps block the heat i guess )
    nevertheless yes the standard engine is weak but ive never seen one struggle to climb a small hill to the point it has to camp 1st gear like in this video so i was abit surprised, here in benguet there are many c engines that range from standards to kapon (removing the factory turbo for some reason) but they still climb while hauling crops with gutted interiors and toploads hahaha. either you didnt build momentum or didnt rev high enough before shifting or maybe you did but didnt shift it fast enough so the flywheel lost momentum during the gear change...
    i like the video though, its got a doug demuro vibe to it only its the philippines version, hoping to see more content from this channel :)

    • @KyleLiongCars
      @KyleLiongCars  4 года назад +2

      Thank you very much for the input!! I'm glad you liked the content :) I'm quite intrigued though as to why anyone would think of removing the turbos???? I get it if it's a supercharger cause it's belt driven, so might eat up fuel economy, but turbos are a big question mark for me haha
      Also, I totally agree with the AC system lacking so much. This car I reviewed has pretty great new 3M tint, and yet despite that, I still find myself sweating at times, except when cruising at higher speeds.

    • @Fux069
      @Fux069 4 года назад +1

      @@KyleLiongCars i have no idea aswell with the turbo deletes cause theres no reason to do so , my guess is that maybe theres no budget to repair the turbo if it breaks but in the case of cars like the fx with a little tinkering to accommodate the delete it will be weaker but it will run normally as throttle is manually operated, unlike modern cars with ecu that if you delete the turbo the ecu will have problems in terms of detecting boost which can throw off sensors and gearing which is why turbo deletes arent an option with newer cars hehe, its either replace the turbo or get the ecu mapped which can be costly in their case

    • @KyleLiongCars
      @KyleLiongCars  4 года назад +1

      That makes sense. Love how simple, non-tech laden cars such as the FX are just far more reliable than newer cars which are just computers with wheels

    • @Fux069
      @Fux069 4 года назад +1

      @@KyleLiongCars indeed, when i drive it i feel like its an extension of my body hehe, step on the clutch and shift a gear and you can feel the entire transmission under your palm and foot work especially if youll accidentaly grind the gears hahaha 😂 step on the gas and you can feel the throttle open or the differential whine and vibrate if the rpm is too low for that gear haha,
      though eventually when new laws mandate this and that the fx will soon be completely phased out from the road along with others such as the revo or adventure :( so until that time comes i dont think il ever change mines unless i really have to, in the meantimes il just enjoy driving a simple yet amazing machine 😇

    This is the 'GL' variant top of the line. Do you have information if the 'Deluxe' variant had power steering? Deluxe was introduced sometime in 1995 or 1996. It was slotted between the Wagon (later called 'Standard') and GL; it looked like the 'Standard' with the same dashboard but had fully covered headliners unlike the Standard, and had body stickers and the same inverted 'V' steering wheel of the GL that's why I thought it might had power steering or at least had an option for it. Otherwise, it wouldn't be ergonomic to drive it if it only had basic rack and pinion steering.
    I have fond childhood memories of this car. Our first car was the Standard bought in 1997 with no power steering. We took it all the way to Baguio and down to Legazpi with no issues. At one point we converted it into an 'FX' taxi and hired a driver and it also served as my service car with the front seat alloted to me (until kids were banned to be seated at the front row for safety reasons) when I was in kindergarten at QC. In the 1990s, almost every family with an FX wanted to earn extra income. It was the 'Uber' that time and was truly revolutionary as it bridged the gap between the taxi and the jeepney. It was actually technically illegal back in the 90's and merely tolerated by the LTFRB; most FX taxis back then didn't follow a standard livery hence they were called 'colorums' as they could be any color. Just slap a cardboard sign of your destination in the windshield and you're good to go. When the LTFRB finally regulated them, they were required to have standardized white livery. They later evolved into the UV Express today. I remember sometime in 1999 our FX was involved in a car accident with the front completely crumpled, but nevertheless it was still running. We had it repaired at Toyota Cubao and I remember seeing the new Revo and Corolla lovelife now in the showroom. At the back is their warehouse, with hundreds of Tamaraw FXs still not sold, and at a distance our FX being repaired. I also remember jumping in joy when our FX was finally delivered to our house good as new.
    There were actually 3 engine choices for the Tamaraw FX. Initially in 1993 it was available in 2C 2.0 liter diesel and 5K 1.5 liter petrol. In 1996 the 5K engine was phased out and replaced by the 7K 1.8 liter petrol, still using carburator. The GL variant had steel wheels with hub caps, but sometime in 1996 they offered 14" alloy wheels. Toyota also offered an option to add wood panelling for the dashboard but it was merely a sticker. Production of the Tamaraw FX lasted until 2002 due to high demand from taxi operators (the Corolla lovelife also lasted until 2005 and overlapped with the Corolla Altis from 2001, until the Vios J variant was introduced in 2005), so it effectively overlapped with the Revo introduced from 1998. From 2000 to 2002, by then only the Standard and HSPU variants were offered, with the Standard only available in petrol and HSPU in diesel, as Toyota did not want to cannibalize sales of its Revo DLX and GL diesel variants which were also popular as UV Express vehicles.
    In Indonesia, this was the 3rd generation Kijang, they were the first country to get it in 1986. I recall during a career orientation back in college, a mechanical engineer introduced himself to us as one of the designers of the 3rd gen Kijang/Tamaraw FX. He went back and forth to Jakarta and Tokyo in the early 80's working with the Indonesian and Japanese engineers and designers. They wanted to design a basic utility vehicle in wagon form, cheaper than an SUV but just as tough as the Landcruiser capable of running in bad roads typical in developing countries and with higher seating capacity for extended families. The 1st and 2nd gen Kijang (known here as the Tamaraw in the 70's and 80's) were basically pickups and not family-oriented vehicles. The resulting vehicle perfectly appealed to the Indonesian or Filipino family, and this was the birth of the 'AUV.' So yeah it's birthplace is actually Indonesia. Although I remember in a 1996 television ad where Toyota marketed it as "Dito isinilang, dito naghahari, ipinagmamalaki ng Toyota." But the marketing eventually paid off as the best-selling model solidified Toyota Motor Philippines into the No. 1 car manufacturer in the country.
    In Indonesia, their top of the line variant introduced in 1992 slotted above our GL variant had power windows and power locks as standard. Before the 4th generation Kijang (Revo) was introduced in 1997, it was even offered in 4-speed AT. This just to show that in the 1990's before the Asian Financial Crisis broke out, Indonesian families already had higher per capita income than us. This is still manifested today as our local-spec Innova has the base J variant while the highest end variant is the V. In Indonesia, their base variant is the G and their highest is the Q.

      I'm not quite sure on this, however as per what my father recalls (having worked in Toyota Q Ave as his first job in the past), as long as it had a tachometer, it had power steering as well.
      I tried researching on the etymology of "colorum," but can't seem to find it. Do you mean that it came from the idea of not having standardized colors?
      As mentioned in the video, I too have fond memories of our FX that was sadly carnapped years back. It sure was barebones, but growing up in a middle class family at that time, a car was a car, and my passion for cars have started at a very young age. I couldn't quite remember if it was our FX or our Revo GL that I would oftentimes ride on the lap of our driver on the way to school and he would let me "steer" the car.
      As for the Innova Q, what does it add to our V?

    • @lawrencebautista1
      @lawrencebautista1 4 года назад

      I could be mistaken about my definition of "colorum," as it was only based on my observation. Not really a Latin term, but a slang used by the LTFRB. Their definition is "A private motor vehicle operating as a PUV but without proper authority from the LTFRB," so yeah I thought it could still be of any color operating as a PUV. But the colorum term could be based on the plate number as well, if white/green instead of yellow but operating as a PUV then it's colorum.
      Yes the Deluxe did not have a tachometer as it had the same boxy dashboard instead of the aerodynamic dashboard of the GL shown here. But it had the same inverted V steering wheel hence I thought it might had power steering as well. In the Revo, even the base DLX had power steering (it was standard across the board) but the DLX didn't have a tachometer either. The Corolla bigbody from 1992 had power steering for the XE and GLi variants, but not for the base XL. But when the Corolla lovelife came out in 1997, power steering was now standard across all variants. The XL did not have a tachometer either.
      Not sure about the Indonesian Q variant. It could have some aesthetic additions over the V. But in the 1st gen Innova (5th gen Kijang), the Q variant was available with the more powerful 2.7 VVT-i petrol. The current gen in Indonesia now have variants standardized in 2.4 D-4D turbodiesel and 2.0 dual VVT-i.

      I think the small 4-cylinder Toyota diesels back then were not as reliable as the gasoline engines from Toyota. I had a gasoline FX before, but I also had experience with the 3L and 2L Hilux. Honestly, those engines were not as well built as Toyota's gas engines and other brands diesel engines like the Mitsubishi 4D56 and especially the bulletproof 4JB1 from Isuzu. The 3L in particular was prone to cracking heads when it overheat wherein the 4JB1 would just need to idle a bit and it would continue trucking along. It was also not as fuel efficient and powerful as the Mitsus and Isuzus, but atleast it was quieter than the extremely clattery Isuzu. That's on top of the other problems I had with the 3L engine (but still better than the even more problematic Mazda WL though).
      I hope the Toyota 2C isn't as problematic as the 3L. Anyway, if I were to choose between the diesel FX, Hilander, and Adventure, I'd still go for FX even if it would be less reliable than others because I personally found it to be more spacious and comfortable, which is important on a family car.

    • @KyleLiongCars
      @KyleLiongCars  3 года назад

      Personally I don't have too much experience with them, but so far, the owner tells me that it still hasn't had any overheating issues.
      I think it's not just the engine that Toyota's reliability comes from. Probably the sum of all its parts that are just all reliable :)

      @@KyleLiongCars : India. This car was sold like a hot pan cakes. One of the best cars and used still in some places, mostly in Hilly and Mountain regions. This model was such a hit that even Innova couldn't get sold off by Toyota, hence they had to Discontinue it and then the Innova Arrived in around 2004-2005 in Indian market and hence we all know that Innova is super. The Innova is proper replacement for this huge ass car. We had this one in white colour and I miss it 😍😭 you can check it's rivals out named TATA SUMO
