Basically -(으)ㄴ데/는데 introduces a background/setting for storytelling.
"뉴스에서 봤는데, 그래서 어떤 배우는 1년에 딱 한 번만 라면을 먹는대."
In this sentence, ‘뉴스에서 봤는데’ is the background/setting of the following clause ‘그래서 어떤 배우는 1년에 딱 한 번만 라면을 먹는대’, which is what you really want to tell.
-(으)ㄴ/는데 provide setting, conveying to the listener that a relevant statement is immediately coming. So, you can put -(으)ㄴ데/는데 to a background sentence, and then continue your story.
More examples:
어제 영화를 봤는데 정말 재미있었어요.
(I watched a movie yesterday, and it was so fun.)
코트를 입어 봤는데 저한테 좀 작아서 안 샀어요.
(I tried the coat on, but it was a bit tight for me, so I didn't buy it.)
요즘 한국어를 배우는데 조금 어렵지만 재미있어요.
(I'm learning Korean these days. It's a little difficult, but it's fun.)
내가 친구한테 선물을 줬는데 친구가 그 선물을 좋아했어요.
(I gave a gift to my friend, and she liked the gift.)
신문 기사를 읽었는데 ‘ITZY’가 일본에서 콘서트를 했대요.
(I read a newspaper article and it said ‘ITZY’ held a concert in Japan.)
