The original soundtrack was going to be used for the unused sonic 2 desert level. The history on that game is super interesting and there are so many cut levels.
I love how Sonic Mania puts gimmicks from other zones into different ones, and the result tends to be good (For example: Quartz Quadrant gimmick into Lava Reef)

However we do know that it was supposed be a ruined version of Green Hill’s present time-period, after Eggman f-ed it up in the past. It could’ve been a dusty wasteland, it could’ve possibly been a desert (which is what most people tend to go with), or it could’ve been whatever the developers had planned for the zone. One time, In woodburn oregon, there was a wildfire getting alarmingly close to my house. There was ashes flying everywhere and it was extremely smoky outside. The sky was all red. This was playing in my head nonstop.

After a long time, we've discovered Shantae's brother, dad or boyfriend, although that might not even make sense. Somewhere, in West Side Island (or Little Planet, because Titanic Monarch is in it) Eggman hides the Chaos Emeralds [very poorly tho :|] from the legendary Sonic.
When the Atmosthere gets too thick with the gas heat use the switches placed around the map to clear the air. fire shield speeds up the Fumes from the Heat. also they remove your rings and block your vision

1992 made the 1st Desert Sonic level. It was an Arabian Oil Foundry with no sand being shown, for it is under the oil.
