I sat behind Jeff at the baked potato club for ten years ‘81-‘92 i saw it first in ‘81 your close the amount is correct but the sticking is different and which drums but if you didn’t see it I would be hard to figure out I had to see it at his hi hat a few times it’s RLR-RL(BD)just repeated I’ll explain think purdie Rosanna RLR-RLR thing so here’s the recipe! R(floor tom)LRRL(sd) BD -- NOW IT FLIPS BACK -RL(sd)RR(ft)L(sd)BD practice the quick move RL(sd)RR(ft) / R(ft)LRR(sd) to get the right move from floor tom to the snare and back also at the end of this he plays ( I think ) the hand to hand pattern on the snareRLRRL(BD) R(snare) and adds an extra stroke you can see Jeff do this is and the double cymbal crash thing YT Jeffrey Thomas Porcaro recording session 1989 Japan watch till the end he plays all the fills he usually plays also YT Jeff intro you can see and hear him play 5 stroke thing on a tracking dare for Benny Hester album song is called passion possession Also Los lobotomy band lobotomy stew he plays this
Never heard this before, but your breakdown immediately made me think of a similar fill by Neil Peart in By-Tor And The Snow Dog, around the 3:50 mark. The timing against 4/4 is the same, and the sticking sounds nearly identical. But instead of two doubles - l l r r L or r r l l R - it sounds like he sneaks a kick in there leaving both hands free to finish on a flam - l l r K F, r r l K F. Or to hit snare and open hi-hats simultaneously. (He's also a double kick player, so he may be doing quads instead of two doubles)
@DWDrumMethods I recall in my 20s abusing the paradiddlediddle providing a right hand lead, dropping the 6th beat (the final left) to make a 5 stroke similar to this, though I gave it more of a quintuplet feel. In fact, even today, I do a similar quint as follows: RLLKK RLLKK RLLKK...
@DWDrumMethods Well I like how you break down rudiments. I'm a drummer playing in bands for a long time and maybe some of things things I know but I never really applied myself to learn rudiments I could be for better.
Jeff does this crazy 5 stroke roll groove at about 8:05 min into this video. Leland Sklar posted about it. So cool i found the original guy who took the video! ruclips.net/video/7hPboLIK7P8/видео.htmlsi=xdPuVemAEu0iPCsC Any idea how to breakdown this groove?😂 Jeff is a legend
Yes it was me who took the video. I believe Jeff was talking about this being a inverted paradiddle groove, the 5 stroke roll was just at the start. I believe his sticking is LRRL-RLLR, with the last 16th note of beat 4 starting the accent pattern. His base plays the standard samba base drum pattern. Sounds easy, but Jeff's feel is so great, and his orchestration is so great, and the speed make for a very challenging groove. Here is the full video just in-case you never saw the whole thing. ruclips.net/video/e4J49rW0l-Y/видео.html
Hi, Thanks so much for watching. Well as far as the kits I make my video's on, my electric kit is a Roland TD-25. My 2 acoustic kits you see in my video's are a Yamaha Recording Custom and I also have used my Tama Birch Bubinga set. I use mostly Zildjian cymbals. But I do at times use some Sabian and Paiste. Foot pedals, I use a DW direct drive MDD double pedal on the acoustic sets and a Tama Speedster double pedal on the Roland. I have more snares than I could ever use, but typically I use either a Pearl Dennis Chambers wood snare or the Yamaha aluminum Dave Weckl signature snare. And Vic Firth sicks. Hope that helps, feel free to reach out if you have any other specific questions. Thanks again for checking out my channel.
Thanks for this video, Love the in depth instruction!

I didn’t know you had a you tube channel!!!! Awesome!!!!
Yes, Originally it was just a place where my students could come and check out extra lessons. But over time it has grown. over 80 videos now.

Interesting... yeah, I would definitely orchestrate that a little differently to make it my own. But, yes, clearly five stroke rolls.👍
Thanks for watching. It's always great when you make it your own. Glad you like it.

Do you do online lessons?
I can. My school did all zoom lessons during covid. I don't do many anymore, mostly in person lessons. What were you interested in?

@@nc3836 You can email me at dwdrummethods@gmail.com, we can set up a zoom lesson from there.
