The scene of Ash's hand being possessed inspired the 1999 movie Idle Hands about a teenage slacker's hand that becomes possessed so he cuts it off and it goes on a killing spree starting with his two stoner buddies who become stoner zombies, one of them is played by Seth Green, one of the creators of Robot Chicken. I was 10 years old when the TV news show 20/20 did a story on how violent the just released "Evil Dead 2" was. I was terrified by the images they showed. I was instantly hooked. It would take me years to recognize how funny this movie is, because I found it so scary as a little kid. While it may seem tame by today's standards (the remake takes things to another level), in the UK this film was banned as obscene and was highly sought after on VHS as one of the "Video Nasties".

They did a good thing here. Starting by retelling the previous movie with changes so it fits better with the sequel. (To some degree in Army of Darkness too.)

Army of Darkness does great as a sequal too. It has about the same level of humor as Evil Dead 2 if not more. They keep us invested with a new setting and plot. The animation/claymation stays about the same but still does well like in this film. The props and acting are still just as great. I personally believe they increase the level of action in Army of Darkness compared to Evil Dead 2. Thats due to the size of the battles and who is involved. They even upped the ante with a secret after credits ending that came with a certain release of the film. So yes it still improves upon its predessesor.
Bruce Cambel made this film what it is with his facial expressions and movements. They matched the written character and his dialogue so well. I dont think I could see many others doing such a great job. Possibly Willem Dafoe if I had to choose someone. It is why I was happy they kept Cambel for the evil dead tv series.
The franchise has become a bit too big just like any other now. We have a tv series, video game, merch, novels, and a new film (evil dead rise). Unfortunately, Bruce is not in the newest film. So as to move on as a franchise it must leave him behind. He is pretty old now to play the part afterall. The new film did amazing still despite this.
For me, it just is not the same. It is one of those franchises where you have grown to love seeing a part played by one person so long you cannot see it in any other way. I cannot see the evil dead franchise without the character Ash Williams..... and no one plays Ash Williams better than Bruce Cambell. So now that Bruce is gone it feels like a shell of its former self. Its like how it will be if they make a new pirates of the carribean without Johnny Depp as Captain Jack sparrow. Thats how I feel anyways.

The people who made this series are local boys to Michigan. They were film students who decided to start making their own productions. They decided that Bruce should be the actor in their films because the ladies seem to like him most at college. If you look it up you can find a lot of short parody films they did in school.
The cabin in these films is an actual cabin the the woods of Michigan. The Oldsmobile that appears in the films is actually the old car of Sam Raimi.

Freddy Krueger's glove is in the shed above the door. David Cannon was an intern working on set production on Evil Dead 2, he basically helped build and decorate the shed, partway through filming Evil Dead 2 he got a 2nd job that paid an actual salary on Nightmare On Elm Street: Dream Warriors as a carpenter and stole a Freddy glove prop which he put in the shed as an Easter Egg.
David Cannon went on to work on such movies as Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure as a carpenter as well as Apollo 13 and Spider-Man: Far From Home as a Set Director.

    @robertcherman Час назад

The first Evil Dead to me is more profound, than the second. Though I believe the 2nd one is a much better movie. But when you know about the first one its kind of amazing what they pulled off. This movie wasn't a student film, though it was equivelant to a student film. Being on the same par as a student film, this movie is fantastic. They started the movie with $50,000 budget, that ended up getting to $90,000 all together by the time they were pretty much done filming the movie. After most the movie was done, they got the budget up to $350,000. Which even at that time was very low budget. Movies were having budgets in the millions in 1981. Stripes budget was 10 million. The Great Muppet Caper 14 million. Bustin' Loose 11 million.
And again, in 1987, Empire of the Sun had a budget of 38 million. The Lost Boys budget 8.5 million. The Gate budget 6 million. And, Evil Dead 2 had a budget of 3.5 million.
It's hard to get people to watch the rest of the movies if they only watched the first one. Though the first one is not the complete story. That is one of the reasons Army of Darkness is called Army of Darkness. Evil Dead 2 was originally the plot of Army of Darkness.
The problem was, they did not have the budget in the first movie to finish the story. So, the second movie had to be made in order to make the original Evil Dead 2 that turned into Army of Darkness. And, I bet you can guess what the budget could not afford in the first movie, that was needed in order for Army of Darkness to make sense. And, if you can't guess, it's the chainsaw hand.
Evil Dead 1 and 2 are the complete first story. A group of friends go to a cabin out in the woods, find the Book of the Dead, everyone gets possessed and almost everyone dies. Ash has to dismember his girlfriend. The owner of the cabin are dead, their daughter is going to the cabin. Ash gets possessed. He cuts of his hand that is possessed. He then attaches a chainsaw to his wrist in place of his hand. Beats the demons. Falls into the warp to middle evil times where he is a God to them.
Army of Darkness is a totally different kind of movie, it feels different, plays different, etc.... But you feel that it is still part of that Evil Dead world.
The Evil Dead series was on my Staff Pick Shelf at Premiere Video in Tucson, Arizona, old Hollywood. 25 years ago, most people had no idea what this movie was, other than the people that watched it when it came out. Working at the video store, everyday someone would come up and said I watched Evil Dead 1&2 and/or Army of Darkness what do I watch next? That series made customers come to me for reactions all the time. Reservoir Dogs was on my shelf too. And they loved that movie too. But it was the Evil Dead series that got people coming back more and more and more. Now everyone acts like this movie was huge or something. It took a long time to make it huge, but now its a cult classic. And, the people that watched it back then when it came out now what I am talking about. And, there is still a lot of us.

Resident Evil 7 is basically just one giant reference to Evil Dead 2.

Side note, the original working title for the next movie was apparently The Medievil Dead. I think they should have kept that!

The demon wall reminds me of one of the phases of the final boss in RE7. Wonder if they got inspiration from this movie.

Definetly need to watch the 3rd in the trilogy now: Army of Darkness. The Evil Dead series takes place after that and is also very good, just a shame it ended when it did but at least it had an ending.
