I like the fact they show you different ways to diagnose problems if the more advance tools aren't available, understanding systems and how they work are your best tool you can have. Your approach with that knowledge determines your next move. Throwing parts at an issue can be time consuming and a waste of money if the problem isn't solved.
I feel like ScannerDanner talks in laymen to the educated, while Eric talks in laymen to the uneducated. Both have their purposes, but for me Eric makes it a million times easier to check and work on my car problems. Thanks for the videos!
Thank you Scanner and Eric... This was the problmen with my F-150. Left me high and dry in the Home Depot parking lot.Un-fortunently I could NOT dissamble the distributer in the parking lot... :( Couldn't figure out how to do it. So I bit the bullet and replaced the whole distributor. But I did have an extra pick up cable an got my spark when connected...Thank you so much for getting me in the correct spot.
I used that trick way back in 1985 I had a Chrysler laser 2.2 turbo . It started by losing power but it would restart . I started by removing the hall effect and on a 2.2 engine its 5 min job. I ran a metal strip and it would only make a weak spark . So even if it gives a spark it may be a low spark . I learned it from my day in the 70s . He was a master mechanic.

Id like to say thank you for this video! I have a 92 ford f150 4.9 that I had a no spark about a month ago. I threw parts at it. New pcm ,new fuel pump,fuel pressure regulator ( dont ever buy a harbor freight fuel pressure tester) fuel filter,and then finally a new icm. Well it died on me a few weeks later.. no spark. Well instead of throwing parts at my truck you helped me diagnose it properly. Failed brand new icm. Thank you sir!!!! Also icing on the cake is that you're a brother in Christ! Definitely subbing!

I like the reference to the hall effect switch even though it may be intimidating to novice mechanics, it is necessary to talk the talk and really, to further their research into components. The conversation relating to test lights and simple stuff as where to place ground leads is invaluable. Keep up the good work.
Hello Eric, saw this great video with you and Paul. My 1990 Ford F150 4.9 is giving me problems to start it in the morning, I have to pump it some 35-50 times before I could start it, after that it would start with no problems. Before it would start with no problems, but now this is what I need to fix. Thank you.

I'm just getting back into auto work and I'm learning more about the electrical issues vehicles encounter MR Danner is by far the best in his field of expertise. in just a couple of short weeks in now looking in my Haynes books and looking at electrical charts. never in my life have I been interested in electrical work but now I almost want someone to go out to my car and create a problem so I can go out and try to figure it out . thanks to all you great tecs for your knowledge

I have a 96 F-150. Same situation. The wire from the ECM to the distributor is a shielded wire that after time will break down (shielding) due to heat. When it does the wire shorts out and there is no signal -- no ignition -- no start. This is a Ford service bulletin that the Ford dealer that charged me $600.00 missed. It was an independent garage that finally fixed it.
Danners book is as good as it gets on Automotive Driveabilty and Electronic Control Diagnostics. I have it and compared to about 50 other books I have bought on the subject it is way above the rest. It is so well laid out and thorough yet clear and concise. Well worth the price and his videos that go along with it make it even clearer. Get it today. Eric brother keep up the great videos for the pros and beginners. God bless.
My test at the pip was 60.4mv,?? What the heck. I have no spark. I'm guessing it's the ICM. I'll keep going through the process.good video. Well, it was the ICM.. put new one in and fired right up.. this no start issue gave me plenty of time to upgrade electrical and other stuff while it was down.. great video guys, I know it's many years later.

Great work you two. I had this same exact problem. I used a LED to see the trigger signal instead of my multimeter and that made it easy to see the trigger pulses at idle. Super cheap ! Love that T pin idea for clipping onto with meter lead.

Brother Brian, You have the best video that I have found online, but I'm still missing something in this very easy chore that wasn't a problem for me at all just a few years ago when I changed my 94 4x4 with the single rear tank with ease. A few years later, now at the rotten age for me it seems of 60 I'm struggling something horrible at changing both pumps in my 1995 2wd due to a crazy array of wire colors (that Ford went way overboard with) making color coding this task completely impossible. In short, I've watched your video a couple of times now, and it's hit me right between the eyes that the best way to figure this out is to set the new and old pumps with the cover for the 4 wires in the same directions and to lay the pin connectors in also the same direction as one to the other old vs new then pay close attention as to clockwise or counter and solder the new pigtail on quick before we change our minds . I think this would make a much better schematic and get the task over with way quicker than even talking about wire colors that came off of a Ford assembly line where job one must have been to be color blind from the get go . As for the 2 fuel lines go if someone is able to mix those up, the pump needs to be exchanged for another one because it's totally f cked up if that's a possibility. Paul and Eric, Your videos together are the best. Would like to see one were it is live and you don't now the fix yet. I would like to share with you on ford no starts, Turn key on and look for a check engine light. Then crank engine over, if the computer is receiving a PIP/crank signal the check engine light will go off. Also you could check injection pulse with a noid lite. no spark no injection pulse-look for PIP signal missing.
Great VId Eric, I had a 1980 F150 4x4 long time ago...that I also ran into a no start issue on a very cold day in Idaho. We drug it in out of the cold so to warm it up to figure out what the prob was....long story short it ended up sheering the roll pin on the distributer gear so causing a no spark issue.

Awesome video on electrical diagnosis. Wanted to share a recent rv rental incident that i touched positive terminal to nearby metal in trying to reset the computer for check engine light. After that millisecond touch and a spark the rig won’t start. It’s a 2013 Mercedes sprinter 3500 diesel. I was told the communication and fuel module fried. I wish I could diagnose and fix the no start. Had to rent a car and leave rv there for towing to a dealership. Electrical diagnosis and fix seems crucial for mechanics.

I agree. The operative word is 'playing', since both Eric and Paul are brilliant. Eric is pushing Paul to drop the jargon, which is confusing to those of us who don't have formal or recent academic training. By doing that, he makes the video more broadly useful and appealing.
The best! I finally learned what PIP means in this case. Its the best of both worlds here betwen the two of you. I had fun and learned exponentially to understand whats happening with this tye of older Hall effect ingnition system.

Great clip guys I've been trying for months to try and get my 95f250 straight 6 to start and run now I see some hope I'm a sienior on ss last mechanic made it run worse almost didn't make it home now it won't even start it ran good but the starter was bad i ll try what eat I've learned from you thank
Disconnect the SPOUT wire plug and adjust the base timing. On the TFI setups where the module is bolted to the side of the distributor, some dielectric grease needs to be applied before the module is bolted up. The Profile Ignition Pickup(pip) is Pin 56 if I remember right. I actually enjoy working on these older fords, especially the 460cid. Extremely easy concepts are demonstrated in this video, and this is the correct way of going about a no spark condition on this type of ignition system.

Eric my 96 is a 4.9 300 u can start up the truck drive to where you have to go with no issues the problem is the truck won't restart until the motor cool's back downv then u can start truck and it runs fine have you ever heard of such

When diagnosing, check obvious things first, spark, fuel, compression. etc. If the engine won't crank, check the battery, starter, relay, neutral switch, etc. Charge the battery and check for a drain. Test codes and spark. Check fuel pressure.
I love it when you two make videos together. Very entertaining and informative. So he CAN actually do diagnostics without a labscope. :P Keep it up guys you're awesome.

FYI, while testing my current flip truck, another way to test is use the LED light just like he did, but crank at the same time. If it stays solid, PIP is bad, if it switches on and off, PIP is good

I used to do this test since back in the 80's.. and still do it on to this day on some 90's Ford 's .. I did this test on the LTD Fords.

I love scanner danner when he do things like testing without al his fancy scanners and scoops. I dont have those things at home and this way i learn how you can do all of your testing without those fancy things. Great vid Eric, thx for this. I have learnd a lot today.

Great clip guys I've been trying for months to try and get my 95f250 straight 6 to start and run now I see some hope I'm a sienior on ss last mechanic made it run worse almost didn't make it home now it won't even start it ran good but the starter was bad i ll try what eat I've learned from you thank

Disconnect the SPOUT wire plug and adjust the base timing. On the TFI setups where the module is bolted to the side of the distributor, some dielectric grease needs to be applied before the module is bolted up. The Profile Ignition Pickup(pip) is Pin 56 if I remember right. I actually enjoy working on these older fords, especially the 460cid. Extremely easy concepts are demonstrated in this video, and this is the correct way of going about a no spark condition on this type of ignition system.

Eric my 96 is a 4.9 300 u can start up the truck drive to where you have to go with no issues the problem is the truck won't restart until the motor cool's back downv then u can start truck and it runs fine have you ever heard of such

When diagnosing, check obvious things first, spark, fuel, compression. etc. If the engine won't crank, check the battery, starter, relay, neutral switch, etc. Charge the battery and check for a drain. Test codes and spark. Check fuel pressure.
I love it when you two make videos together. Very entertaining and informative. So he CAN actually do diagnostics without a labscope. :P Keep it up guys you're awesome.

FYI, while testing my current flip truck, another way to test is use the LED light just like he did, but crank at the same time. If it stays solid, PIP is bad, if it switches on and off, PIP is good
