What I like most about Paul Dano is that each role I have seen him portray is very different from the next. He is in a much lesser known film that DDL is lead actor in called "The Ballad of Jack and Rose". It is well worth checking out.
Victoria Marie Miller I definitely appreciate this! I loved him in Little Miss Sunshine. I was introduced to him then and I remember my mom or dad telling me, “He’s gonna be doing big things.”
Food for thought. Supposedly he offered DDL Travoltas part in pulp fiction. But he initially turned it down. Then thought about it and actually pursued it. But Tarantino already cast you know who. To date it was supposedly the only role DDL pursued in his flawless career..
Nathan Bodie What? No way, DDL’s amongst the best but could absolutely not picture him playing as Vincent. Michael Madsen was offered for and supposed to play Vincent after Madsen just finished filming Wyatt Earp, the director of the movie at the time in 94 held Madsen back from the Pulp Fiction opening because he thought it would hurt the promoting of Wyatt Earp.
I kinda think Tarantino was wrong about this. Dano's performance was perfect for the character, just look at the church scene alone. Dano wasn't *supposed* to live up to Day-Lewis' character, that's kind of the point. It was meant to be a power struggle, but a futile one where Day-Lewis ultimately holds the upper ground due to his possession of wealth and his determination. If Dano was considered level with Day-Lewis for the whole movie then the puddle scene and the end milkshake scene would feel out of place. It's the subtle submissive traits that complete Dano's character, I wouldn't consider them 'not great' acting.
Dano was genius in this movie. Enough to portray his older brother Paul Sunday, a martinet prophet, dogmatic malcontent, and malevolent schemer. Both he and Lewis had starred together earlier in another movie called The Ballad of Jack and Rose that had received critical acclaim. Tarantino is just wrong in his opinion of Dano.
@@brucesmith54 Dano can be a bit shreiky/awkward then stolid in his roles for a character. He has charisma but only at certain reserved moments that probably does not fit Tarantino's wry intangibles he wants an audience to see in his movies. Tarantino misses the main point: Plainview doesn’t seek medical attention first, after dragging himself through hell, he seeks confirmation of his find. It tells you everything about him in that one moment.
Are you sure? He's already in a splint and ona stretcher when he's laying down in the office to have his gold weighed. Maybe I missed something. But you're right. That one scene says it all about him.
@@ddmarty I don’t think he’s on a stretcher. He’s just laying on the floor. Also, Tarantino said “gold” fifty times but IIRC it’s silver, not gold. The men who weighing it write the word “silver” on the form they are completing in that scene.
I think it's brilliant that Daniel's only concern after waking up with a broken leg is the silver. "There she is..." Such a simple way of revealing character.
His character was supposed to tower over everyone. Especially the weasel preacher. That’s why Dano’s performance was so good. He was as he was meant to be. No ego. He served the story!
Joe O'Donnell Yeah. I sometimes want to watch GONY again, for Daniel Day-Lewis. But I really don’t like DiCaprio, so then I stop myself. Day-Lewis should’ve been the star of that movie.
di caprio's character isn't very compelling in GONY. It's like a movie about a mob boss, but told from the perspective of one of his lackeys. I know that's the "angle" Leo is using to infiltrate bill's gang, but that pretty much IS all he IS.
Are you insane? DiCaprio has had plenty of great performances....some better than others obviously...but in the departed ,which he should've won Oscar for,and the reverent which he did win, those are just two of his great roles....wolf of Wall Street? I mean he been nominated plenty of times ,even without a win, a nomination just how's that hey even tho I didn't win,we still know how well you did....he's one of our generations great actors,he can do anything...while I know this is just my OPINION and obviously people will disagree, that is my stance on LEO...Alo like how he uses his wealth to try and save the planet...come on? How can u not like that? Anyways tats my view on him ..Daniel Day Lewis is always phenomenal in anything he's done,so it's no surprise he won...GONY was one of his best roles too...love to see him in another Scorsese film..I believe he's done two?
Paul Dano was absolutely excellent, in some scenes his presence invoked almost physical disgust in me. This is how I knew he was good. I love all of Paul Thomas Anderson's movies, but if I had to choose my favorite, it's Magnolia. When it came out, that movie was such a revelation to me. It completely changed my way of thinking about cinema and on some level even about life.
One time, I asked a girl I liked if she wanted to go out to Dinner with me: And she told me that _my_ presence ‘invoked physical disgust’ in her. All this time, I thought that was a bad thing. I know who I’ll be taking to Wendy’s tonight. No, but seriously: _Magnolia_ might be the single most Powerful, Profound, and Emotionally-resonant, Film I’ve ever seen. _’Synecdoche New York’, ‘Take Shelter’, ‘The Act Of Killing’,_ & _’The Fountain’_ are the only others I can think of that even come close-to having the kind of Impact that _Magnolia_ has on me.
Same here, Magnolia is my favorite PTA film and in the top 10 of my life. Because of that, it made me sad that Anderson said if could go back he would "cut it down". I honestly can't think of a single second that should be taken out.
Ya, but he's not a great actor. He's a good actor. Yes. But a lot of what you're lauding, was the character was written so well. And he was able to do it. But you can certainly see he is acting. When you watch Daniel Day Lewis you forget you're even watching a movie. It seems like a documentary and that's just footage of the actual guy. Paul Dano is acting. And he did a good job with the role. Daniel Day Lewis is on a different planet.
In fact, even Di Caprio disappeared a little in front of the enormous performance of Day Lewis in Gangs of New York and he's not just anyone. It's really not possible for everyone to be on an equal footing with Day Lewis!
This is so interesting because this is the only movie in my memory where I noticed how terrible and distracting the soundtrack was. I absolutely hated it.
Because Boogie Nights is very close to be a Tarantino style movie. back in 90s when Boogie Nights was released, people were comparing it with Tarantino's movies. and ironically that's how Tarantino and Paul Thomas Anderson became friends
@Gavin He becomes suspicious when he says the line "get them liquored up and take them to the peach tree dance". Henry barely reacts, it's obviously something he would/should remember.
Yes, and the very thing that Tarantino complains about is the very essence of what the character was meant to achieve in the face of Plainview. He was meant to be a lesser combatant, who still challenges him on many levels, which makes it all the more of an annoyance to Plainview... that this lesser, sniveling child is forcing him to up his shrewdness to achieve what he wants. He wasn't meant to be an equal rival specifically in order to draw the ire of Plainview that much more.
Dano's performance turned TWBB into a failed masterpiece. Wrecks every scene he's in. Tarantino is obviously trying to be as kind as possible. The world is full of pious whimps and weasels, so there had to be something distinctly formidable or mesmerizing about THAT preacher to antagonize an obsessive titan to self-destruction.
@@carlodave9 you're describing the whole point of the character. It is the very fact that this sniveling, common (not pious) weasel manages to successfully challenge Plainview that makes Plainview hate him so much. And I believe it's ultimately his ordinary cowardice that pushes Plainview over the line to murder.
You need to watch Daniel's performance in My Left Foot. I struggle to pick a better performance between My Left Foot and There Will Be Blood. Outstanding.
@@assmane999 Yeah, you know better than one of the best living directors, lol! Tarantino was 100% right, and the scenes in which DDL and Dano were on screen together, the chasm in acting talent was jarring. Dano seemed like he was auditioning for a school play in comparison.
People don't understand that he was 22 at the time and DDL was 50, and had 4 fucking days to prepare for the role, he was cast very late. I think he did a wonderful job and when I think of There will be blood, I always have his performance in his mind, just as much as DDL's.
Well, Paul Dano literally only had a weekend to prepare for the role before they started shooting. I think he knocked it out of the park and nobody could have done it like him, even if they would've had months of preparation like the other actors did.
...and I think Dano played his character to make it seem like Ali vs Quarry type fight because that was the dynamic between those characters. Dano was always seeking the truth, but Lewis always knew the truth. Lewis was the magician stealing everyone else's fortune right from under their noses. Dano was playing the sucker.
Both are in my top 10 ever. TWBB is number ten bc it’s a masterpiece, and DDL gave the greatest performance maybe ever. But No Country is number 2. It was the movie that got me deep into movies and it’s just edges it out. And I also think Magnolia might be PTAs best, but idk
I'm sorry my good sir but Paul is a really accomplished actor and his performance in TWBB was beautiful. Granted, Day Lewis's performance was great, but no sir, in no way Paul Dano was overshadowed, he stood his own against an overwhelming performance by one of the finest actors in history.
This is one of those movies I just can’t quite get my family and friends to understand how good it is. I’ve made them watch it but they just don’t have the emotional connection. This is such a good movie that I rewatch it every so often and I am just blown away every time.
I watched it once years ago, and admittedly not paying attention as I ought to have. Can you tell me what you mean by "emotional connection"? I feel a strong link to "Magnolia" and can explain that. I am wondering what about the film binds you to it.
@@hystrionic honestly Daniel Day-Louis is a magnificent actor. His acting in this movie is what gravitates me to it. Honestly it might be the fact that he is a horrible person and also a father. I try to be a good person and be a good father. My father was not such a great person. In some senses my dad was a downright evil person. In other ways he was a loving person. Not a lot I want to talk about in that regard. I’m not really sure what my emotional connection is to it. Like with him in the crucible in the end he just has such an emotional delivery in his lines that I am hanging on every word. He’s just so believable as his character. So goddamn selfish and such a real portrayal of a person. Like I really believe a person like that can exist. The man is full of contradictions in the movie.
@@liggerstuxin1 Have you heard the gospel of Jesus Christ before? God's holy word the Bible teaches us that we have all sinned, we have all done things our God given conscience tells us are wrong, that keep us from experiencing His holiness and goodness in our lives. Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” Sins such as using His name in vain, to use the name of the God who created us and gave us life, without respect or reverence, and worse, often with disrespect, jesting or even hatred. Exodus 20:7 “Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.” God is a just, holy and righteous God and in His love and goodness He must punish sin. If we are living sinful lives, breaking the ten commandments, and not acknowledging God in our hearts, God must punish us for our wickedness. God must send us to hell, a place of torment, weeping and gnashing of teeth, where all unrepentant sinners will go. Since we all have sinned, and fallen short, how can we be saved from this eternal place? Romans 5:8 “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” The good news, the gospel, is that God was born of a virgin, lived a perfect, sinless and holy life, as Jesus of Nazareth, and sacrificed Himself for our sins. He shed His blood and died on the cross and took upon Himself the wrath of the Father so that we might go free. After being crucified, he was buried in a tomb, and then as prophesied, resurrected by the power of God and defeated sin, death and hell. Whosoever believes in Him and follows Him will have eternal life! Forgiven of all sin, saved from death and hell and given a new heart to truly know Him. That is the mercy and love that Christ showed on the cross. He was perfect, yet died for imperfect people like us. Please take the time, you are not promised tomorrow, to read these next verses humbly and honestly and pray for God to forgive you of your sin and grant you His Holy Spirit and forgiveness in Jesus Christ. God bless you in Jesus' mighty name! Amen. Romans 10:9 “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 14:6 “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” John 11:25-26 "Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?"
i'm so glad Quentin points out the tremendous struggle that's implied by the scenes of Daniel breaking his leg in the middle of nowhere, the pan up to the vast rocky desert around him and then the cut to him lying on the floor of the assayer's office - - that was something I noticed quite clearly in my first viewing of this film and it's clear the story intentionally shows that to provide some insight to the state of mind that the character of Daniel Plainview comes from and the place in his soul that the anger with Eli comes from. Here is a man who survived and made his way in the world through force of sheer will (at least in his own mind he sees his survival of those mine shafts as a pure force of will and determination to live.....and not only live but succeed) and when he comes across someone like Eli who he sees as a huckster taking advantage of people in weakened positions he's incredibly angry about it and it's driven from his own experiences of things like dragging himself on his elbows across a desert to make the very little amount of money that enabled him to begin his entrepreneurship. those two back to back shots at the beginning are exactly what makes the character of Daniel Plainview so complex and prevents him from being just another mustache twirling villain - - it humanizes his struggle and forces a mirror in front of the audience ....when Plainview has that line "if it's in me, then its in you as well" - it's not just to the character assuming the false role of his brother - it's to the audience as a whole. basically saying "this is a human quality that can easily spiral if you allow yourself to become too emotionally disconnected from society"
Yeah ima be honest i can’t read all that but I was scrolling to see if anyone else totally agreed with Tarantino when he said that. Because that’s exactly what i was thinking when that scene happened
Apparently Paul Dano had only a few days to prepare for his large role as the original actor dropped out, hence why he plays 2 characters and the story was changed to make them twin brothers
Don't really understand the complaint about Paul Dano. I thought he played his role(s) very well. The way he talks, his ominous presence, the tension between him and Daniel, the scenes in the church, his ego...I don't really know what more to ask from him.
Indeed. It seems that QT completely missed the point of him striving for just that very feeling coming from Plainview... How could this huckster, sniveling child possibly compete with him, and yet, he was a thorn in his side the entire time. He was meant to be a lesser combatant, but one who challenges him more than anyone or anything else in his entire life. He's meant to be a frustrating foil on the very levels that QT seems to be criticizing. it's what gets under Plainview's skin all the more.
Take it more as Tarantino's taste for actor balance. He wanted a full battle of wills btw the characters, PTA had a more singular study. But, see how the Master works because the two leads have comparable dramatic power scene after scene. That came out of the same sprawling mega script as TWBB, so maybe QT was on to something. Or maybe his feedback got PTA on the move!
There will be blood is probably my favorite movie of all time. The opening 20 minutes is the most fascinating in that you must use your imagination and that's the secret of the movie. It allows you time to comprehend and imagine what might or will in at least 20 different scenes.
One of my top 3 films. I’ve watched it 5x. The sound, music, casting, cinematography, costumes, makeup, acting, script, editing. All of it. It's immense.
Totally disagree about Paul Dano not being up to the task. He was spectacular and in fact recommended by Daniel Day Lewis. And why in the hell can't Tarantino talk about anybody else's films without talking about himself? He seems to be his own biggest fan.
Brupcat I said nomination, not win. Hard work has nothing to do with it. Shit actors work hard too. Deakins lost the Oscar to elswit that year, rightly so. Believe you and me, for a film like TWBB, if an actor with a role that big did not get nominated, it’s because he’s not spectacular or amazing to use the adjectives that have been used. Those adjectives are meaningless.
One of the best acting performance ever. Dark, empty and frightening, everything it was meant to be. The atmosphere created by the score, sets and overall performances leaves me with a sickness in my stomach and an apprehension for the future which instead of turning away grips me and excites. Fucking awesome!
And QT completely glosses over the fact that he doesn't immediately go for medical care, he literally drags himself to an assay office with the silver he found. That's a pretty important character moment.
Paul Dano was really Great in his part. He had the perfect antagonistic face and body language which was required for Daniel Plainview. It's like, Daniel could crush him in physical competition, no doubt. But it's all the mind games.
Eli was a silver-tongued manipulator just like Daniel. They were two demons cut from the same cloth fighting for blood in the desert. Daniel loathed how much worse Eli was at being vile to his fellow man. Both their performances were perfect.
Personally I thought Paul Dano's performance was excellent. It created such an incredible dichotomy of 2 diametrically opposed characters clashing in an almost epic way. Dano's perormance for me at least played the part to perfection.
DDL inhabits every character he plays !! My favorite performance of DDL will always be Bill ( The Butcher Cutting ) in Gangs of New York !! He just chews up every scene hes in outshines a younger but very Talented Leo DeCaprio .....
i used to work in the oil fields around bakersfield and the score during the fire scene reminds me of some of the sounds you hear when working out there. a lot of machines clanking around in a sort of off rhythmic pattern. brilliant score and brilliant film making. i feel like ive time traveled 100 years back to the same area where i live when experiencing this film.
Agreed. Dano was excellent for the role. Tarantino isn't God. He even called Paul Thomas Anderson his contemporary at the start of this. I was like "Lol yeah right. When you develop a sense of nuance, Quentin, I'll stop laughing." Fucking delusional egomaniac. I love his films but Anderson is on another level. Tarantino WISHES he was his contemporary.
@Eric Cartman Yep. But QT was using it in a very specific context, comparing himself to Anderson and putting himself on the same level, which is hilarious. Anderson knows how to portray subtlety. Tarantino does not. I enjoy his films but it's like comparing Stephen King's books to those of Jules Verne. Both are entertaining but only one of those men is a genius. Tarantino wants to be a genius and pretends to be one, but he ain't. Have the final word. I've said all I have to say.
My favorite scene *spoiler* is when Daniel confronts Henry about lying to him. The camera stays on Henry while he gently and slowly pleads for forgiveness leaving me wondering how Daniel is taking it, then the camera switches to Daniel's face and there's no doubt! You're about to die Henry.
He was mad that he let this fake family member talk him into getting rid of his other fake family member, who was at least pure in heart & the only person alive not trying to manipulate him.
2 things stood out for me..the AMAZING cinematography.... unbelievable in fact...and 2nd was of course Daniel Day Lewis...he was SO deserving of that Oscar he won for the film...his performance is unreal..it's the kind that makes u to act even if u can't act,but you WANT to act like he did( also in Gangs of New York) ...loved the movie, great adapted screenplay....two thumbs way the fuck up...
Agree with most of what he said. And not that he cares, but I definitely disagree on his Paul Dano performance critique. I thought he did a fantastic job. It was definitely DDL’s movie, no question, but I don’t think his performance would’ve come off as strong if Dano hadn’t have done such a great job himself.
It was silver, not gold. It’s Plainview not Plainfield. And Dano nailed it. He was the more meek and reserved character and that’s how he played it. Of course he wasn’t on the level of literally the greatest actor who has ever lived playing his greatest part, nobody could be and nobody should ever be expected to be as good as DDL in TWBB.
I've saw this movie 10 years ago and rewatched today cuz a split of tarantino talking about it, I could say every scene was in my mind before, it looked like the first time I watched the movie was last sunday ... proof of a real masterpeace
When i first saw it, it took me a while to reeeeally love it, but this movie makes you think and those scenes stick with you forever, sometimes hard to describe
It's refreshing to have Tarantino validate my feelings exactly about this film, particularly the soundtrack and DDL. What a tour de force performance, but also, I can sympathize with him all the time because how hard he worked to get where he's at and people act pretty shitty around him.
it's... Tarantino, bro. he's like a little kid that makes films for fun, leave him be. don't take him that seriously. I mean, even P.T. Anderson only said "thank you, I take that as a compliment" when Tarantino was trying to do criticize his film. I feel like you shouldn't even try to argue with Tarantino, he will already have his own mind made up lol.
I also choose Boogie Nights over There Will Be Blood as far as PTA’S masterpiece goes. It’s close, as both are great films, but Boogie Nights just hits different.
I don't think Tarantino is crapping on Paul Dano's performance, its just that DDL gave one of the best (if not THE best) performance of the 21st century. Not many actors can share the screen with DDL, even Leo had it tough in Gangs of New York.
Tarantino was talking about having to step up his game, because There Will Be Blood is so good, and talks about it when it was made two years before this review. Tarantino went on to make Inglourious Basterds (2009), Django Unchained (2012), The Hateful Eight (2015), and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (2019). That's some awesome motivation. I love all of those movies, and they're definitely a deviation from the worlds of Kill Bill, and the more rooted in reality, Jackie Brown, Pulp Fiction, and Reservoir Dogs.
after There will be blood he whent from the more hand held camera style to a more milimetric planification of the scene... the scene of the bar on inglorgeos basterds i thing it is the cinematic set piece that doesnt look like a cinematic set piece that tells us in the video...
Tarantino gets it wrong about how Daniel falling in the well justifies everything he did in order to gain wealth. The entirety of his labor is what justified his wealth. Daniel traded every meaningful relationship he could’ve had in order to beat his competitors.
Funny how Tarantino says "If there's a movie that demands to be seen twice (or more) before you can have an intelligent discussion about it, then it's There Will Be Blood." Hey Quentin, let me tell you about this film called Pulp Fiction xD
"There will be Blood" is maybe the greatest american movie since the last 20 years. It is such a rare and precious thing when you leave a cinema completely stunned, dazzled, shocked, your head full of thoughts and full of the film you have just seen. And "There will be Blood" definitively did that to me. That is for these emotions that I go in movie theater and they don't often happen !
“If I reach high points in my new movie…” boy did he ever! Inglorious Basterds immediately became (and still is) my favourite Tarantino movie, and possibly even just my favourite movie period.
5:48 Yes even the first time I saw it over a decade ago, I was enthralled by the opening scene, and to me, it solidified the type of man Plainview was, for the rest of the movie. Even in the final scene, when he says "Albert......im finished...." I still see the prospector jjust enveloped in greed and money and his evil drunken lifestyle. Such a good opening scene.
Man I couldn't disagree with him more on Paul Dano's performance, it's he Daniel Day Lewis? I mean nobody is, but I thought he gave a brilliant performance and definitely adds to this movie and every movie that he's in.
Anderson is one of the best out there but Tarantino has more duds than greats. the Coen Bros and the two Andersons would probably be my favorite working right now.
Great commentary by a truly great film maker! May I add a brief personal observation? The performance by Daniel Day-Lewis is a profoundly great performance. In my view, it ranks among the finest performances in film history.
Big respect all around, Qt, twbb, Ddl. All wonderful, and both men the pinnacle of what they do. "Water is wet, the sun is hot, and ddl in this film is great." About sums it up for ddl. I liked hearing qt dissect the film, from a position of a successful director, and lifelong cinephile. I have to appreciate someone who is great at their craft giving credit to others being great at what they do. Twbb stuck with me for days, it's the type of movie you can rewatch because i get more out of it on subsequent viewings.
I think it works in the film because neither was his character (Eli versus Daniel Plainview). If Paul Dano put on this amazing charismatic sophisticated performance then he seems like less like the small town preacher who you know was going to be outclassed by Daniel at every turn. Maybe that's a bit meta but I think Paul playing it small and low caliber was right choice. It's like everybody gives Ringo shit, but maybe if you have 3 guys like Paul, George, and John what you need is someone who can just smile and hit the kit. Is there such a thing. as too much brilliance?
Gary Oldman. Whom my best friend and I refer to as simply "the King". I'm fond of saying, " If they make a bio pic about Oldman it will star Gary Oldman as Daniel Day-Lewis playing Gary Oldman".
You all make good points. I wasn’t being terribly serious and for the record I thought Dano was amazing in this film. Really everyone they got on the cast did a top notch performance, that’s half the reason the movie is so great
That scene right after the explosion that deafens I was typing this just as QT started describing the very same scene I always singled out as the standout section of TWBB. Longview carrying the injured boy like a long distance runner while that percussive, monotonously gorgeous score makes that nightmare so real to the viewer.
Superb acting, great cinematography, excellent writing, overall story progression was just amazing, and most of all you as the audience just get swept away with these characters and the setting. Love this movie.
So, here Tarantino says that if his next movie - at the time, Inglourious Basterds - will succeed, partly would be due to There Will Be Blood and the inspiration that comes from Paul Thomas Anderson. Now, I've recently rewatched Anderson's movie for like the tenth time and noticed something. When Plainview comes to the farm with H.W. and asks if he can camp around, the farmer (Eli's father) begins to give orders to his two daughters, such as "Would you take a glass of milk for our guest?" and stuff like that. It's the same dinamic that goes on in the first sequence of Inglourious Basterds, when the farmer Lapadite gives his daughters orders - like to take a glass of milk for the colonel Landa. I wonder if Tarantino was struck by that TWBB scene and decided to make his own version. Knowing the director's history, it wouldn't surprise me.
I definitely had to watch it twice, at first. One viewing simply was not gonna cut it lol one of the rare few movies that almost requires a second initial viewing.
I liked Paul Dano, but hearing this from Quentin does make me see the performance from QTs perspective, and can almost agree with him based on his framing.
Tarantino could never make a film as good as 'There Will Be Blood', even if he made a movie a year for a thousand years. Oh, and Dano is absolutely incredible.
Well hold on there, if you think that Daniel Day Lewis character completely outshines Paul's character, then did he do exactly what he was supposed to?
For PTA, yes; for how QT wants that kind of lead/support energy, no. Think of it like, could you make a film with only Dano's scenes? Maybe. Pick any QT main supporting, there's enough there for a movie & you'd never think you weren't watching the original lead. Joaquin Phoenix & Philip Seymour Hoffman are QTs kind of balance.
Paul Dano is the perfect little weasel in that movie, played it so well.
What I like most about Paul Dano is that each role I have seen him portray is very different from the next. He is in a much lesser known film that DDL is lead actor in called "The Ballad of Jack and Rose". It is well worth checking out.

@@joefelice5062 I see now. Thank you.
I think it's brilliant that Daniel's only concern after waking up with a broken leg is the silver. "There she is..." Such a simple way of revealing character.
Dano was great, but Daniel Day Lewis's performance was towering, they should have given him 2 oscars for this performance.
Did you come up with that yourself?
His character was supposed to tower over everyone. Especially the weasel preacher. That’s why Dano’s performance was so good. He was as he was meant to be. No ego. He served the story!
Dano was better than great .
They can't do that.
Bill The Butcher was legendary but Daniel Plainview is peak DDL 🤩🙏👑
Thought Paul dano held his own with one of the best actors, more so than di caprio in 'gangs of new york'
Joe O'Donnell Paul Dano is such a great actor. Magnificent in TWBB. Also really happy for him for the reviews he is getting for Wildlife. 👌
@@49dwalin55 love & mercy also worth a watch, think qt just isn't realising how big a task it is probably just keeping up with ddl.
One time, I asked a girl I liked if she wanted to go out to Dinner with me:
And she told me that _my_ presence ‘invoked physical disgust’ in her.
Magnolia is #2 on my overall all-time list
I totally agree. Dano was amazing, and Magnolia is PTA’s best film.
Paul dano was perfect. He absolutely crushed it in the presence of daniel day lewis. Not many people could do that
Hail boognish
He was so good I actually started hating him for real i cant help it lol
And he had only 4 days to prepare for it; whereas, DDL had 2 years.
He was good, but Tarantino is right in saying the film would have been better if the performance was closer to tier with lewis’
In fact, even Di Caprio disappeared a little in front of the enormous performance of Day Lewis in Gangs of New York and he's not just anyone. It's really not possible for everyone to be on an equal footing with Day Lewis!
Guess we shouldn't expect to see Dano in a Tarantino movie any time soon...
Maybe his role was kind of gonna be overshadowed ,,,He was up against DANIEL ....HE DID GOOD
@Saudade milkshake flavour
Wouldn't expect to see Dano in a tarantino film anyway lol
Hopefully not, he’s a mediocre character actor. That’s all he is.
Dano absolutely killed it. This is the one thing I disagree with QT on.
glad he touched on the soundtrack, Jonny Greenwood's a genius
When I first saw the film at the cinema I stayed put to find out who did the score, and I was delighted as a Radiohead fan.
isn't Arvo Part's music also part of the soundtrack?
Woah I had no idea johnny worked on this movies soundtrack! So cool!
This is so interesting because this is the only movie in my memory where I noticed how terrible and distracting the soundtrack was. I absolutely hated it.
Love it and love the music from Phantom Thread
Doesn’t surprise me at all that he would choose Boogie Nights over There Will Be Blood.
Armando Padilla-Enea “There Will Be Blood” just didn’t have enough 70s music in it.
Because Boogie Nights is very close to be a Tarantino style movie. back in 90s when Boogie Nights was released, people were comparing it with Tarantino's movies. and ironically that's how Tarantino and Paul Thomas Anderson became friends
He's right though. I also prefer Magnolia over TWBB.
@@razbigranicu i prefer There will be Blood over most films.ever made never mind any PTA Film
@Gavin He becomes suspicious when he says the line "get them liquored up and take them to the peach tree dance". Henry barely reacts, it's obviously something he would/should remember.
I was actually blown away with Paul Dano’s performance. I’ll disagree with Quentin Tarantino on this one
Dano's acting was amazing.
I agree
To this day, no performance has wowed me like DDL’s performance did in this film. I was stunned the entire viewing just in awe of his acting.
The 2 greatest male performances in my lifetime, DDL in There Will Be Blood and Christoph Waltz in Inglorious Bastards.

@@shadowbanbaitaccount7874 Nah, Paul Dano was truly excellent in this movie.
@@HugoSoup57 Agree to disagree. He was total sh!te.
I think the affirming of his performance is rather than hire a second actor to play his brother they allowed him to play his own twin.
Having a one of a kind punch me face doesn't hurt the role either
Daniel Day Lewis gets a year to prepare for his roles. A YEAR! We're lucky if we get a month.
...and I think Dano played his character to make it seem like Ali vs Quarry type fight because that was the dynamic between those characters. Dano was always seeking the truth, but Lewis always knew the truth. Lewis was the magician stealing everyone else's fortune right from under their noses. Dano was playing the sucker.
Don't actors find out they get the role and a script long before shooting starts? Or was his hiring a last minute decision?
What a great time in movies it was when this came out. We got this and No country for old men at the same time
Which do you like better? I'm a No Country man myself, but i'm always interested to hear what other people have to say
Yes! Both are amazing.
Evader - Factssssss. To this day, this performance is my the best I’ve seen and I’ve been watching film religiously for 25+ years.
No Country for Old Men doesn’t hold a candle to There Will Be Blood
Inglorious Basterds to There Will Be Blood is The Flintstones to War and Peace
hahaha good one, and I agree
I'm sorry my good sir but Paul is a really accomplished actor and his performance in TWBB was beautiful. Granted, Day Lewis's performance was great, but no sir, in no way Paul Dano was overshadowed, he stood his own against an overwhelming performance by one of the finest actors in history.
This is one of those movies I just can’t quite get my family and friends to understand how good it is. I’ve made them watch it but they just don’t have the emotional connection. This is such a good movie that I rewatch it every so often and I am just blown away every time.
its Ok to enjoy things on your own
I watched it once years ago, and admittedly not paying attention as I ought to have. Can you tell me what you mean by "emotional connection"? I feel a strong link to "Magnolia" and can explain that. I am wondering what about the film binds you to it.
Its a movie that critical thinkers appreciate
Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
Sins such as using His name in vain, to use the name of the God who created us and gave us life, without respect or reverence, and worse, often with disrespect, jesting or even hatred.
Exodus 20:7 “Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.”
God is a just, holy and righteous God and in His love and goodness He must punish sin.
Romans 5:8 “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
The good news, the gospel, is that God was born of a virgin, lived a perfect, sinless and holy life, as Jesus of Nazareth, and sacrificed Himself for our sins. Amen.
Romans 10:9 “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 14:6 “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
John 11:25-26 "Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.

Tarantino criticized the actor because he can't criticize his friends badly written character.
@@Scott-vn1ov : Or possibly it's because he couldn't criticize your monstrous idiocy??
Take it more as Tarantino's taste for actor balance. He wanted a full battle of wills btw the characters, PTA had a more singular study.
But, see how the Master works because the two leads have comparable dramatic power scene after scene. That came out of the same sprawling mega script as TWBB, so maybe QT was on to something. Or maybe his feedback got PTA on the move!
It's a little cartooney and transparent. Doesn't totally fit into the world of the film.
If you didn't see this on the big screen, I can't even explain how intense it is. Especially the score/noise running behind it.

Personally I thought Paul Dano's performance was excellent. It created such an incredible dichotomy of 2 diametrically opposed characters clashing in an almost epic way. Dano's perormance for me at least played the part to perfection.

@Eric Cartman Yeah I'm a "snob" who loves the films of both men. Learn to read, idiot.

From a directors point of view You know it’s gonna be an amazing movie when you get DDL to agree to do it.
Everything he'd done is brilliant
Even his shit films are great because he's an amazing acting presence
Daniel Day Lewis is absolutely brilliant. His roles in There Will Be Blood and The Gangs Of New York are 2 of the greatest performances of all time
His best performance is in The Age Of Innocence
It was silver, not gold. It’s Plainview not Plainfield. And Dano nailed it. He was the more meek and reserved character and that’s how he played it. Of course he wasn’t on the level of literally the greatest actor who has ever lived playing his greatest part, nobody could be and nobody should ever be expected to be as good as DDL in TWBB.
I don't think QT will be reading these comments, nimrod.

I always hated how Tarantino criticized Paul Dano’s performance. He was perfect for the role
Besides. Maybe the dude had a horse or someone picked him up.
I can tell you missed the point of the movie
I love how everyone is complains "you're opinion is wrong mine is right!" as far as dano. It is his opinion.
Dano was great.
Decent.
Mediocre
Extremely great
He became my favourite modern day/coming up actor after I saw this
Funny how Tarantino says "If there's a movie that demands to be seen twice (or more) before you can have an intelligent discussion about it, then it's There Will Be Blood."
Hey Quentin, let me tell you about this film called Pulp Fiction xD
yeah he directed it dummy

"There will be Blood" is maybe the greatest american movie since the last 20 years. It is such a rare and precious thing when you leave a cinema completely stunned, dazzled, shocked, your head full of thoughts and full of the film you have just seen. And "There will be Blood" definitively did that to me. That is for these emotions that I go in movie theater and they don't often happen !
“If I reach high points in my new movie…” boy did he ever! Inglorious Basterds immediately became (and still is) my favourite Tarantino movie, and possibly even just my favourite movie period.
Inglorious sucked
@@alreadybanned-pe6se so you say. I say it’s my favourite Tarantino movie. I guess we have different tastes, if you can imagine that
Well made but extremely anti-white movie.
@@Vingul it’s anti-nazi, if that’s what you mean
Dano only had 4 days heads up, was meant to only play the paul brother roll
5:48 Yes even the first time I saw it over a decade ago, I was enthralled by the opening scene, and to me, it solidified the type of man Plainview was, for the rest of the movie. Even in the final scene, when he says "Albert......im finished...." I still see the prospector jjust enveloped in greed and money and his evil drunken lifestyle. Such a good opening scene.
His assessment of Dano is spot on.
Man I couldn't disagree with him more on Paul Dano's performance, it's he Daniel Day Lewis? I mean nobody is, but I thought he gave a brilliant performance and definitely adds to this movie and every movie that he's in.
too cartoonish
Tarantino and Anderson are definitely the best writer/directors out there. You really get a sense of their love for film in their movies.
Anderson is one of the best out there but Tarantino has more duds than greats. the Coen Bros and the two Andersons would probably be my favorite working right now.
@@APAL880 I'm not sure I would describe many Tarantino films as duds.
APAL880 other than Death Proof what else is a dud?
8:05 * Robert Rodriguez just left the chat *
9:38 Quinten Tarantino Leaves The chat
To be fair. Robert rodriguez made: the adventures of sharkboy and lavagirl.
ArtRoomProductions lol
Wetimus Prime 😂
Quentin doesnt have the maturity required to understand this film. he is so invested in his fantasies and his memories and himself in general
“He’s just not in the level and the caliber of Daniel Day-Lewis…” Who is honestly?
I think it works in the film because neither was his character (Eli versus Daniel Plainview).
If Paul Dano put on this amazing charismatic sophisticated performance then he seems like less like the small town preacher who you know was going to be outclassed by Daniel at every turn. Maybe that's a bit meta but I think Paul playing it small and low caliber was right choice.
It's like everybody gives Ringo shit, but maybe if you have 3 guys like Paul, George, and John what you need is someone who can just smile and hit the kit. Is there such a thing. as too much brilliance?
Joaquin phoenix
@@matina-4734 Agreed, Joaquin is just as good as DDL, wish PTA would have made a movie with both.
Gary Oldman. Whom my best friend and I refer to as simply "the King". I'm fond of saying, "
If they make a bio pic about Oldman it will star Gary Oldman as Daniel Day-Lewis playing Gary Oldman".
You all make good points. I wasn’t being terribly serious and for the record I thought Dano was amazing in this film. Really everyone they got on the cast did a top notch performance, that’s half the reason the movie is so great
That scene right after the explosion that deafens
I was typing this just as QT started describing the very same scene I always singled out as the standout section of TWBB. Longview carrying the injured boy like a long distance runner while that percussive, monotonously gorgeous score makes that nightmare so real to the viewer.
Definitely a masterpiece. Also, the Master

Imagine watching a movie then being able to call the director to talk about it, that’s so awesome.
Paul Dano: Nothing
Tarantino: IM BOUT TO END THIS MANS WHOLE CAREER
Yeah, he’s about to be Riddler in The Batman so I doubt it.
Probably one of the best movies ever made. I have watched it more times than I can count and I will keep doing so.
Superb acting, great cinematography, excellent writing, overall story progression was just amazing, and most of all you as the audience just get swept away with these characters and the setting. Love this movie.
i think dano does incredilbe, the church, bowling alley, and dragging scenes are unforgettable, they are a perfect yin-yang
For some reason I get the feeling that Quentin Tarantino is the bottom in whatever relationship he has with Paul Thomas Anderson.
What do you mean?
He means sex, person on top is dominant and person on bottom is not
Lol. Smfh
he only likes feet
@@andrewaronson3364 but what does he mean with their relationship's?
With OUATIH he got close imo
@@cesarnavarrete248 Jackie Brown for me. Love that movie.
i agree
thanks man was feelin lonely out there...
@seanmorrisandthedoghousero9843- Those are the exact 2 things that I thought thinking as I was listening to Tarantino' s comment.
The score lasts for 35 minutes, a further 46 minutes of pre-written music is featured making soundtrack Intelligible for Oscar. Still Prolific!
Not just outshine but embarrass, dominate and murder.
Johnny Greenwood did a magic in this movie with the soundtrack....my boy from my fav band ever Radiohead
