    Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. As a creator and a viewer I wanted to explore this topic a bit. I have a cooking/food channel and I don't have enough of a following for this to be an issue yet (and probably won't need to worry about it for a long time yet), but as a viewer I sometimes feel I should contribute financially to channels like mine, where the creators must be spending a lot of money on ingredients to cook their dishes or meals to share & review with their viewers.

    I do not wanna earn money from my friends. I like to create and transmit my followers my experiences for their culture benefit. BUT I like them to have the possibility to support me so I have more time and more resources in their own benefit. If this is possible, why should I do not give them that opportunity? Nobody is bound to pay me. Patreon is an option.

      If money was the limiting factor than you could make causality. If a content creator is creating their content as a job they need to make that clear. They aren't doing it for fun or for genuine interest, it's for money because they're working.
      It's a business ethics problem.

      I appreciate the honesty. Like you, but with far fewer subs, I too am a content creator. I do what I do because I want to add value to the lives of my subs. Not because I'm trying to use their money to build a better workshop. Patreon has not brought the RUclips community closer together. Just the opposite. Now, because I'm not a member of the club, I get sub-standard content. That's bullshit!

    I think you are a bit lost. People don't give creators money to have influence over them, feel like they are owed something or to change the relationship. The reason people give creators money is because they *value* the content being produced. Example: I remember someone donating $300 to a streamer because he said everyday he watch the creator because it brings laughter in their life and take away from the pain of losing a love one. Yes there can be donators who give to try and influence the creator but majority of the time that is not the case.

      Well ok, but family & friends can watch for free, but understand that people pledge because they WANT TO. Giving them an avenue to appreciate and support your work financially may enhance your relationship rather than diminish it. I guess it's about intentions, at the end of the day, the preferences are yours and we respect that.

  • @yasmineali9862
    @yasmineali9862 6 лет назад

    Totally respect this guy. I think its a personal choice. Like, some people spend a lot on investments to create content, and they dont have a stable amount of income to keep going, but they know that its something they want to keep doing. Thats when Patreon comes in handy. But there are people who have fans that cant get enough of their content and would willingly pay to have access to them, which I think is a great thing honestly because that just changes the whole "starving artist" belief.

    Justin, great video. Thank you. I get what you're saying re money, and until recently, I would have agreed with you 100%. In the last couple of years, I've made the conscious choice to look at money differently. As woo-woo and new-agey as it might sound, I now look at $ as "energy." In the same way I've come to regard creativity as an energy that moves through me and is transformed into music or a painting or a guided meditation. So, as I prepare to launch a Patreon page, I'm looking at any money that comes in as energy, to transform into content, that goes out and cycles through my patrons and the world at large. We'll see how this theory holds up, and always open to revising my perspectives. - Paul

    Patreon is necessary though, for some people,if you haven't the funds for the accessories, say,technological equipment if you're in a studio. Patreon is a helluva better way to get financial back up, then some others ways where you're restricted about what you can, and can't talk about, that sucks bad. Thanks for sharing your vision. I cannot help but asking: Seems like you have more of a problem with receiving money the with the patreon system? To me, as an artist, I am very resourced by knowing I am contributing to others life, yet I wanne sustain myself and in that I am willing to receive acknowlegment AND monetary contributions. As an artist I contribute to society to peoples life, why not receive the stream coming back to me? A person having a bakery would not say , I make you bread but I don't want money for it? Same goes for me with art and contentvideos (even more so, cause their value is so related to your personal story!) Making yourself dependent on them in relation to censoring yourself in content is a choice, I reckon. I am more like 'You want to support me, thank you dearly, but I don't see why that would stand in the way of my freedom to decide upon my artistic choices, (or in your case content making.)

    • @ChrisJohnsonCJs-Kitchen
      @ChrisJohnsonCJs-Kitchen 5 лет назад +1

      Good points, but don't forget that a bakery (or other business that makes & sells a product) has overhead to pay for. If they gave their product away, they literally wouldn't be able to stay in business. RUclips is a free platform and I personally find myself wondering what some of these creators spend their Patreon funds on - I mean, when they say it helps them to continue creating content, what does that really mean? How does it help. As a VERY small channel myself, I do feel there might be a place for accepting funds in my future, but I don't know that I could ever take that step - expecting my viewers to fund something I started doing for fun to hopefully help them in their daily lives.

    I don't mind content creators using Patreon with its rewards if they put the same rewards on every level and the rewards are not the type that should be given to all the creators subscribers, or they have no rewards at all. It is hurtful to subscribe to a channel and later find out that, because you are not on Patreon you do not get to see videos, photos, live streams and such even if you monetarily supported the channel in other ways. Sadly, many who use Patreon fail to set up a second way to monetarily support their channel or when they do, they do not give "rewards" to those who are contributing whenever and how much they can. I believe a content creators should care about all their subscribers-those who can pay a monthly amount, those who can only pay whatever and whenever they can and those who can only support by watching, liking and commenting. No content creator should hold any material they produce as hostage, only allowing some to see it.

      I'm the same way I'm not going to support a channel where all they do is buy booze and BS with the money viewers send them.

    So, how are you making money? It sounds great that you want to dp this for thrills, but the reality of life is that we have to work to pay our bills. Unless you already have money...just curious.

    Whoa you have a right to your beliefs but, the implication is that receiving money for work is wrong- unless this sin't work for you. Clearly we all need money to eat so how do you earn your money- you don't earn from youtube, someone else is paying for your work. So somewhere money is exchanged- you provide value (in some way in your life) and people pay you for that. So you are choosing to exclude RUclips as a part of your income and that's ok.

    I respect your position, just my small thought, is you open a patreon account, and you use this money for invest in your channel, like technology or different aventures, your viewers can get more. And open oportunities that maybe without the help off the viewers you and the viewers will not have. Posting the same content in both places, they will be not difference between people from RUclips and people from patreon. In this way the people who won to support you they can do. But i do really respect your position.

    This video's title should be "Why I don't want donations" instead of "Why I don't use patreon"
