No one tones chords or shapes phrases more beautifully than Richter.

while i havnt listened to many versions of this piece, something about richters version touches a feeling in the composition that regardless of the composers original intention, is intense emotional and honest.

That's the best recording Richter did with this concerto, not the earlier ones. It is very balanced because the conductor channeled Richter's boasting musical energy in the right direction. And as I have the record, I can only say, it's amazing what venyl recording can offer compared to sometimes mediocre CD recording. The nuances are all there, without digital technology.

This is probably the best piano recording of the 20th Century.
The conductor is Stanisław Wisłocki. The orchestra is Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra. The date of the recording is 26-28/04/1959.

quite possibly the most beautiful piano concerto of all time.. listening to this inspired me to search ebay for a sealed audiophile vinyl pressing of this concerto & I did find one ( not this actual recording )....I suspect that Art Garfunkel was listening to Rachmaninov for inspiration in the early 70's because the passage from about 1.30 to 1.50 always make me think of an old song of his titled 'second avenue' which might explain why I liked that song ( & still do ) when it was ' new ' LOL

I've heard many people who said that Richter played too "powerful". I feel sorry for those, who can't allow this true genius to express his feelings better than they can themselves...

you put it, you listen to the agreement sublimely ask Richter, his accent so expressive, the works of Rachmaninov, so beautiful and you think of all those damn cochoneries of nuclear war, the misery in the world ... us for life and you start to cry.

"I listened again to my performance of Rachmaninov's 2nd Concerto with considerable pleasure; some of it has turned out quite successfully and is certainly on a par with the work itself.
In terms of its virtuosity, I also found it quite acceptable. This is what happens when you don't listen to an old recording for a long time."
From a notebook of Sviatoslav Richter, 1977
Just imagine Richter with pleasure listening to his own recording. :) "Hm,... quite acceptable"... ;)

@gc65531941 I think it was Chopin who said of Franz Lizst, "I wish I could steal his way of playing my etudes!" :) And we can thank God that no pianist plays Ravel like HE did!. Compare the 2 clips of the Pavane on here (Richter's and Ravel's)

@gc65531941 The interpreter is the secondary physical medium for the composer's art. Concert performers all know that in order to "interpret", they must first remove their egos and simply become an extension of the primary medium, in this case the piano.

Hi, was this really performed in 1996?
    trovar.com/str/dates/a1996.html
This states otherwise, but it doesn't list him playing Rachmaninoff in the 90s at all, so I don't know how accurate it is...
I thought Richter had hearing difficulties in his last few years, though. I think it was in his documentary. If I recall correctly he heard all notes a semitone higher than they actually were. And I think as a result of this he was unable to perform in his last two years...

the best version than i have listened is from the pianist julius katchen and the conductor sir gregor solti, and i´m not very a fan of richter, but he plays that very very good (not as better like julius) but in my opinion the conductor isn´t just de best, but its ok¡

@OctoberSabine I get the impression, when Richter (or Horowitz )plays you don't listen to Brahms, or Rachmaninov, or Beethoven, rather you listen to Richter (or Horowitz). They are re-interpreters, with their unique sound and distinctive flamboyant style- all their pieces sound the same. They lack depth or clever musical interpretation. This is why I favour Gilels.
