As the Granddaughter of a minister I was raised that it isn’t sitting in a brick, wood or stone building once a week. It is not about winning all week and then asking for forgiveness on Sunday. It isn’t about praising God and then judging or looking down on others. It isn’t about being perfect, because only God himself is perfect. A true Godly life is about how you live every single day. Listening, helping and being kind to other’s. I still pray every single night before I go to sleep, just as my mother taught me when I was 4 years old. I thank God for what he has given me, even in the hardest of times, and the last couple years have been beyond hard….a never ending hard. Still my faith holds tight.
I won’t lie sometimes it is hard to practice faith when you’re in pain; when you have a genetic auto immune illness, when your body is broken and struggling. For the first time in my life, with all the places I have lived, ending up in a place where friends don’t come easy, you are judged without ever even being spoken to by some because your from a different place. Both in person and online when strangers have torn you to your very core because you are ill and not seen as anything but less, even called names because you are ill. When others don’t bother to hear you or think your time doesn’t matters as much as their’s. Still for me and my ever-present companion (talking about the pain and the faith) is with me.
I love that Jesus doesn’t simply say we’ll have trials and sorrow and then leaves it to us to figure out. Instead, he promises peace and reminds us that he has overcome the world, meaning our hardships aren’t without purpose. How we respond to pain and suffering is critical to how we process what’s happening and how healing will take place. If you fill your mind with wrong thoughts: God is mad at me, God is not good, worse things are going to happen, etc., you will struggle to experience the peace of God he promises to us in Scripture (Philippians 4:7).
But when you fill your life with God’s Word and surround yourself with people who speak hope and encouragement into your life, your experience will be much healthier.
“How sweet your words taste to me; they are sweeter than honey.” Psalm 119:103
“Taste and see that the LORD is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him!” Psalm 34:8
“When I discovered your words, I devoured them. They are my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear your name, O LORD God of Heaven’s Armies.” Jeremiah 15:16
When we fill our minds with God’s Word, we are reminding ourselves of who our God is, what he’s like, and we replace the lies of the enemy with the truth of our good God.
If I can touch one person’s life with my music then my pain was all worthwhile.
