"WARNING", When those wood chips decompose, they make dirt. When it rains, dirt makes mud, when that freezes, that makes one of the slickest roads you've ever slid off of. Voice of experience. Been there, done that.

No flack for taking down trees. You need to manage your forest. By taking down trees you make more nourishing light for your other trees, reduce your fire danger and create sunlight for potential solar energy production. Congrats on the chipper! You should have a contest to name it!

Hi Guys: Just a thought from the old guy. Here north of 49 from now until February after the day job work hours of day light are gone. I would mount a LED work light just under the top bar of the ROP; to still get in 2-3 hours of yard work before supper. Mounted there will also give you a mobile work light for the sawmill and other areas around the property. Also a large rear light for backing up moving snow etc.
    the old guy (82) Bert.

Katie and Greg, you will never regret going bigger and getting the best one on the market. It will last you for many years, is more efficient and is much faster than the smaller ones. If you went on the cheap you would of needed to replace it several times because they wear out quicker. In the end this was the best decision. Love your videos and always looking forward to the next one.

Just a suggestion, we had to put Loctite on the bolts holding the side pieces on the intake of the chipper. The vibration would shake them loose after a period of time. Oh and have your discharge chute blow it out further discharging like you are will lead to it clogging up more.

Congratulations!

Very nice chipper. Makes sense to get one that runs off the PTO. I believe you mentioned this before when you bought the tractor. This way you wouldn't have another small engine to maintain. From what you showed, it appeared to not handle the processed wood very well at the end of a board shooting out larger chunks. Whereas with the trees it appeared to shred them all the way down.

Hello Katie and Robert. Well Robert, it looks like you might need what you were wanting, a quad and a dump trailer. Perhaps when you get to putting something around the house, maybe some 2a or 2b limestone. If you had a rock border around the house, maybe some pea gravel. You will get to those projects and make good thoughtful choices. I expect a lot of limbs will be gone by the time you make your next video. Have good days!

I think that's a great idea to reduce the dust on your roads. I imagine if you just use the chipper as a part of your routine tree harvesting, it won't add very much time to the process, and your roads will improve as a side effect. Big win! Given how much you do with tree harvesting every year, I think it was the right call to "go big". The smaller chippers are WAY slower with the same sized stuff. This will greatly improve your productive time. :-)

What an AWESOME blessing!!!! There's so many uses for wood chips on a homestead. Having a the BEST chipper you can afford in the only way to go, you'll never say I wish we went smaller. It sure puts out some nice size chips...
Turning all the tree litter that laying on the ground into usable wood chips is a great form of fire prevention. Having a large wood chipper is a fun way of cleaning up your land.
20 some years ago we broke down and bought a smaller wood chipper at that time it was all we could afford. BUT there's been many time we wished we would of waited a little longer and saved up a few hundred dollars and bought a bigger one. This smaller one takes so long to push a limb through it. It said it could chip upto a 4 inch log, THEY LIED the biggest is a 2 inch limb pushed slowly through it. Needless to say we still end up cutting up the bigger limbs on our chop saw to use as fire starting wood and we also use it in the wood burning cook stove. We use that stove in out outside kitchen for canning mostly.
Just be sure when you use wood chips around your garden NEVER USE Black Walnut chips. I don't remember why not to but it's not good for your garden....
I'm so happy for you kids. Much love and prayers, may y'all be blessed in Jesus named... BBE

The answer is that I don't want to have to buy it six times. Buying a cheap piece of junk because it's less expensive, is a fools move. So you rock Greg! Don't let Kattie push you around because she's cute, and thinks she the one in charge.

When you need to take something heavy out of the truck bed consider removing the crating and any parts/hardware that aren’t attached to reduce the weight as much as possible (easily 100lbs). Stack some cribbing right behind the truck about a foot lower that the tailgate so if the sudden load tips the tractor it won’t have far to fall. Also use something for a counter weight (the backhoe would’ve been perfect). That was a pretty sketchy move sliding it off the tailgate like that, lucky it turned out ok.

Well that's the first time I've seen wood chip put down on roadways. I think most of-gridders lay stone and gravel which is much better for winter usage. I'm inclined to think that when the wood chip gets wet and starts the rotting process, it might get a bit slippery.

    They are expensive.
I use branch wood in my wood stove all the time. So I love the 4" ones that don't fit in my chipper. Problem with the wood chips on the driving areas is after a while, they can make the ground so soft that your vehicles sink in to the axels. This can happen after prolonged rains and after the spring thaw.
Hearing protection would be a good idea.
    Higher RPMs are better. :)
A good 5 prong fork is useful for easily moving the chips. Enjoy!

Had a 12 inch eager beaver when I had a tree service. High RPMs are a must. The angle of your shoot is too tight and will cause shoot clog. Lift the shoot up some and don't put anything in over 5 inches. 6 inch will cause more frequent shoot clogs. Alway put the butt of the limb in first, the travel of the limb and shoot sides will cripple any banches on the limb going in. It's nice not to have to pull it out and cut them. Chipped a lot of wood in my life. Hope this helps?

I think a lot of people just don’t know how many ducking trees surround BC. It’s a forest. Like literally everywhere. And they also probably don’t know how bad the fires get. Def protect ur investment and def thin the land. Your gonna need a massive amount of firewood anyway. Start chopping. Dunno if your into it but wood chips are also really good spawn material, I.e. mushroom food. You can use (some species are better than others) deadfall to grow an outdoor mushroom forest. Even if you don’t eat mushrooms it’s super cool to see and it’s amazing for the soils. Do keep in mind the chips will also attract the little guys to your house out there.

It will also get rid of the same trees that can't get enough sunlight that also serve as fuel for forest fires, the less brush the safer you'll be in case of a nearby forest fire. I will tell you what they do in Poland from such wood chips. They are used to make pellets. You can earn good money on it. Pellets are a material for smoking in stoves. For my idea I reserve 2% of profits. Hi Hi Hi. Regards from Poland.

Oh Katie... it was so close! He almost traded you for the wood chipper and that would of been so bad/lol. Na, he loves you more than a peanut butter and jelly sandwich so your good to go. I like having good chip an used to take my paper sacks from the store, those big brown paper bags, fill them with damp wood chip, then put them on a hot bed of coals in the stove and shut it down for the night, and the next morning those chips were in a form looking like a mass of hot coals but a slight tap and they fell to the coals and immediately finished burning really hot. I would put some small rounds right with that bag of chips and got so much good heat, stuff that would of normally went to a pit to burn or be compost was now a great heat source.... I would store several bags outside for the stove because it held a fire for a good long while and I stopped having to use so much wood through that same stove that you have now... well mine was a blaze king but so close that its like horseshoes or dynomite.. both count if close right???. I hope that this gift you two gifted yourselves is just what you needed to get those pesky limbs a way from the woodshed or the mill as it will work for a lot of the wain trim. Love the both of you and wish you best of everything .... everytime!!!!!!

Yae, you have a huge chipper to go with your wood mill. Now you can put all of it to good use, if you have to bring them down anyway.

We have that chipper and it does jam a lot. Mostly when we chip a lot of small stringy branches. So avoid stringy branches like tops of trees like holy. We use it to chip our sawmill scraps and fallen branches mainly.

bear in mind that wood chips are a great insulator and that may keep ice longer on that road but that being said just putting down more will probably give traction
