That looked like a special edition as it had scenes not in the original version I have. Perhaps that slowed it down. In any case it was a spectacular flick, especially the scenes of Roman architecture. I'm sure the actual Rome was not quite as enhanced as it looks in Gladiator, but that's what movies are about. The inside of the Colosseum looked much like the several documentaries about it. Can you believe when it was first built it was not dry in the arena but wet?! It was one big pool of water where they reenacted navel battles and fed some people to the crocodiles to entertain the masses. After a time they closed it for a while, drain it and updated it as in the movie. Excellent movie alright. And Hans Zimmer! Music is what makes a movie, no doubt. Heard you were doing Shawshank soon. You'll like it! A good sense of the US prison system between '47 to '66, and it's an excellent Stephen King story.
Commodus was fairly unhinged in real life too from what i have read. A real tyrant who believed he was hercules/like hercules and actually fought in the arena himself, so this depiction isn't far off. On a different note: Spartacus reacion? Yes please! :D
Amphitheatre or sometimes circus, you did see Commodus practicing fighting manouvurs in Germania (as it was known in he ancient world) to show later he had some fighting skills as an amateur in the Amphitheatre
Those soldiers were with Maximus in the beginning I believe that is why they have respect. Quintus was the general Maximus was talking to before they took down the Barbarians. The guy with the scars in the crowd was Maximus personal servant.
A great cast, a return to a discontinued ganra (the Roman epic) we havent seen since Spartacus 1960 a good interesting story, and a talented Director with a huge 100 million or more budget. what more can you ask? it was destined to succeed and it did

Will definitely add spartacus to the list!
Thanks for watching, I think Joaquin was phenomenal as commodus
I feel like this character was a combination of different bad roman emperors. Like commodus (gladiator games) and also caligula (the incest thing).
@@lastword8783 true
@@lastword8783 You forgot Nero. That guy was craycray.

If you would like to see Russell Crowe in an early role, he is great in LA Confidential.
