- This episode we continue our herping adventure in Japan. We head to Takarajima Island in search of the legendary Tokara Habu Pit Viper (Protobothrops tokarensis). As always, we encounter many other snakes and reptiles along the way!
Spoiler alert don't read unless you saw the video! When looking for the krait and finally found one and identified it wrong, it was awesome and I just really like how you stopped the video and made the correction. Most people would have cut that footage out. And honestly that part of the video was awesome. The excitement in your voice the story about finding it, everything was so perfect. Most people would just erased the video so they look like they never make mistakes. Not even realizing that "the mistake" was the best part of the segment. Great work!
Thanks so much Denis! I’m not perfect and EVERYONE makes mistakes. My mission is the bring people the most raw and authentic representation of what my adventures are like, even the mistakes. A good opportunity for everyone to learn something new :)
You have to be of of the bravest people ever. You’re on an island that you can’t get off of so we give a pit viper chin rubs😂 I love that your fearless but omg my heart skips a beat when they strike out at you!
You have to be of of the bravest people ever. You’re on an island that you can’t get off of so we give a pit viper chin rubs😂 I love that your fearless but omg my heart skips a beat when they strike out at you! This trip has been amazing so far can’t wait to see next video.
I've seen 100s++ of herping expeditions. This very episode is easily within my top 3.
Incredible work 🏅
Greatly appreciate the kind words!!
Those black specimens are insanely beautiful. I’m glad your childhood dream has been realised. Thanks for sharing it with us David. I thoroughly enjoyed it. 👊
I’m glad, thanks for watching!
How you remember all the scientific names for all the snakes you find blows my mind!! You are one intelligent dude!!! Awesome video, man!!!!!
I try my best haha. Appreciate the support!
Also, David enunciates like nobody’s business, even when he’s excited,
amazing! 😂
@@The_Crucible714 and I don't hear him say "truncated" every 2 minutes! 🤣
I wonder also and it's best to know the scientific names in case of snake bite.
That Krait was stunning. Congrats on an amazing trip and some amazing finds!
Thanks so much! And thanks for regularly watching my videos. Where in the US are you located? If you are, I’d totally be down for a collab next time I’m in that part of the world.
@DAVIDSFEED of course man, you always seem to be finding cool stuff. I'm in Virginia, but moving to south carolina soon. You're welcome anytime, just let me know when you're in the area!
You’re an absolute legend David. What a shot with you handling that black viper! I would love if you would overlay the pictures that you take of these very rare snakes
Thanks a lot! I’ve been meaning to show my photography more in these videos, I’ll definitely keep doing that!
@@DAVIDSFEED you do a great job and zooming in and getting clear video but I just know you take incredible pictures as well. I’m in northwest USA so I love seeing these exotic vipers!
Wow, I thought for a second you were announcing you're taking a cargo ship to visit Skull island to search for King Kong and his friends...what an epic way to start a video! ;-)
Thanks!!! I much prefer the snakes than some oversized bastard ape 😂😂😂
I was really happy for you in this video. You genuinely seemed thrilled with that hyper-melanistic one. It's always cool seeing people fulfill their dreams. Great video! ("They're 69ing" and the "rubber girlfriend" were great comic relief!)
Thanks! It was a really fun episode to make.
Really awesome video bro!! Just to be able to show something on RUclips for the first time is pretty special! Glad ya found exactly what ya wanted!!
I appreciate it Scott! My dream would be to one day make enough from RUclips to do this full time - just constantly travel and make content. Currently each of these trips is still entirely out of pocket and a big financial loss. But I’ll keep it going as best I can. Thanks for always watching!
Fantastic chill Blue/Black male Protobothrops! Those fascinating eyes were hypnotic!
They really were! I wish we had these where I live
日本の野生動物たちに興味を持ってくれて、どうもありがとう!この小さな国に住む美しい彼らの魅力を多くの方々に楽しんでもらえたのかと思うと、本当に嬉しい!Thank you for introducing those beautiful wildlife in this small country! I hope you and people who are watching this video enjoyed! By the way, about Japan Snake Center, I remember that none of the staff, including the director, could speak English...😅
Thanks a lot for the comment and information! I’d love to visit the snake center one day if I ever visit Japan again :)
How interesting that the beautiful black one had a wonderful disposition, very pleased that you could handle him.😊
That black snake is your spirit animal for sure.
It sure felt like it haha
Great finds of the Habu's eating roadkill frogs! It would be interesting to do a study of the venom differences between the Island Habu's and the Mainland. For some reason (perhaps food scarcity) island versions always seem to possess much more potent venom. Really almost a different or subspecies.
On the island it is a different species entirely. These are Tokara Habus (P. tokarensis), whereas the one on the other islands is the Golden Habu (P. flavoviridis). I think their venom is similar in toxicity but the Golden Habu is more dangerous because it gets way larger so would inject a greater quantity of venom per bite.
Your enthusiasm is palpable, I was grinning and relieved when you found the melanistic snake, even though I knew it was coming!
That makes me glad, I’m glad you enjoyed it! Thanks a lot for watching 🙏
I would have had that lobster swimming in a pool of garlic butter & chardonnay before you could say "Totally Truncated"🐙Nice vid!!!
Hahahaa you’re not the first person to say this
Seems like David caught Rupert’s “truncated” bug! 😏
Arghhh! David 🤪. I was just thinking how pleasant it was to watch a herping video without the word “truncated” being used. And as I’m writing, I hear it again. That word is getting seriously worn out.
Apart from that…,. Loving the videos 🙂👍🇳🇱
I love it when David says truncated. 😆 🤣 Rupert 😆 🤣 toking game 😆
He’s gradually switching to “truncated” from “battans wrasse.” I admit I enjoy watching the “keyboard warriors” go wild in his comments.
I think you’re right. It’s just become a hard to break habit because I spend so much time about Rupert.
Congrats, David! Total success, zero truncation.
You got that right! Overall the trip was a massive success
Wow, that black viper was awesome!
Cool video 👍🏻
Thanks again!
Another fantastic video! What amazes me is the amount of road kill they encountered. Considering there’s minimal people and vehicles on this secluded island.
The fact that snakes were actually eating those road-kill frogs was wild! Those, the frogs in salt water & moray eels maneuvering on land had me 🤯! Animals are just built different out there.
Thanks a lot! There is actually quite a few locals driving these roads in the daytime - and there’s an absurd amount of Kajika frogs.
What surprised me the most was their tolerance to salt.
Watching for the melanistic. Also i like what sky adds. Very cool. Safe travels guys
Thanks a lot! I agree that having Skye there ads a good touch to the videos
David bellissimo vlog con animali fantastici, complimenti a tutti e due.
Thank you very much Vincenzo!
Another great video David. Keep em coming.
Thanks, will do! Appreciate the support
Thank you for the video David!
My pleasure! I’m glad you enjoyed it… you won’t believe what we find in part 3! 😏
@@DAVIDSFEED I’m excited.
I love how careful you became after those years
🤣🤣🤣
I Always Admire your Knowledge about Snakes and Other Species..
Keep up..
Thank you, I will!!
Wow I watch a few drifting japan youtubers and never heard of this island. Cool spot
It’s really not a tourist destination. The whole island is absolutely tiny too, only like a mile in diameter
well I have never heard of tokara island but it is now on my bucket list! PS I am glad you posted these videos I have been studying japanese for a few month because I love the wildlife and now I have something to show them why.
Fantastic! I highly recommend visiting Japan, it was wonderful in every way.
You've never heard of Tokara Island because the correct name is Takarajima.
Your videos never disappoint 🤩 Thank you for it and what an amazing jet black habu viper !!! Killer animal
Thanks for watching! You’re very welcome
Another favorite edit from DAVIDSFEED. WOW!!
Thanks again!
Ah yes, the classic fleshdoll in the tidepools. Common in the states
It took me a while to figure out what that was, right after Sky said “there are children watching” too! Lol
I’d bet this belonged to a lonely fisherman out at sea. This isn’t the first time I’ve found a “toy” like this while herping.
@@DAVIDSFEED very common in Michigan when looking for rattlesnakes, the sandbarrens are home to rare herps and used toys
That first Habu was very bitey! That one didn’t read the book about them not being very defensive.
Indeed. To be honest, virtually all of them except the black one at the end were pretty bitey hahaha
Someone forgot to tell the Habu vipers that they were docile. Lol. Great video from start to finish 👍
I am loving your adventures!! Thank you for sharing with us. It is so awesome to see all these amazing species and a joy to watch you both find them!
Glad you enjoy it!
I watch a lot of herpers and with you, it's only a matter of time. You're pushing your luck handling them like that.
“A little smooch on the head…” 🫣😂
You may be right - who knows. However, I’ve been told this countless times over the past decade and yet I’m still here. I seem to be doing something right, but of course, I’m well aware accidents can always happen. As with most things in life :)
@@DAVIDSFEED it only takes once.
Wow. Congratulations. That was a really nice snake.
Thank you!
@@DAVIDSFEED Would it be very expensive to join you guys on a heroine trip in Thailand? Would be a dream come true but not so rich 😬
The amount of road kill for such a lightly populated island seems a lot.
Great video. I am really pleased you found the melanistic habu and its so nice to know that there are still a few places in the world where snakes are very common.
Thank you! Not too many places like this left
I’m glad you come to Japan.
Me too! It was absolutely amazing
Knocked it outta the park again! Beautiful pics David, I can’t wait for p3😊
Thanks so much! I hope part 3 won’t disappoint!
@@DAVIDSFEED I’m positive it will not disappoint!!
The fish is a blenny. Also, as a marine fish keeper, I had a moray eel escape a tank and it was out of the tank for several hours. Eventually we found him curled up like a snake under a reclining chair. I threw him back in the tank and he came back to life. So it does not surprise me that these eels can go from tiny pool to tiny pool.
Thanks for the info! And yes, those morays seemed pretty skilled at navigating on land. I wonder what the reason for this behavior might be
Brooooo, this was literally a huge plan for me by the beginning of the year, but I just got too busy and can't find a perfect time to go! I'm so glad that you did this, and I'm so encouraged by your video!
Makes me happy to hear! Thanks!
Protobothrops tokarensis! Great herping and a great find. Congratulations!
I would have loved to see a few individuals Ryu Kyu Goniurosaurus species.
Goniurosauris is in my most recent video. And thanks for watching!
Amazing flounder with beautiful colors green with blue skirting. I've never seen such varieties in your field trips friend.
Thank you so much 🙂
Dang, that lizard in the cave, his nickname should be Sir Lots Of Tail!
🤣
YES!🔥🔥🔥🔥
🔥🔥🔥🔥
you are a very talented and gifted individual
many blessings
Awesome video David !
Thanks Russell!
Another amazing video and content. 😊
Thank you so much 😀
Delicious Southern Rock lobster. Most of the southern Asian species are clawless. You mainly get real clawed lobsters up North. Yup the eel was looking for those crabs hence it hunts in and out of water. Same for the Mudskipper in its hole. Beautiful place!
Thanks for the info, I appreciate that. I only really know reptiles well 🤣
The roadkill feeding was so cool. What a great unique find the Lord provided!
It was really neat! They seem to do this frequently
I love watching your videos ❤ 🎉
Glad you like them!
I’ve never known any frog able to enter salt water without being desiccated. Another new kernel of knowledge! The fish was a goby species and btw, only the Maine lobster possess the large front claws. All others including Florida spiny, Pacific and Indo-Pacific lack the big front pincers. In Australia they call their reef lobsters “crayfish.” Excellent video.
Interesting! Thanks for the info, always appreciate learning about things I’m not as familiar with.
Thank you! 😊
Another great video ! I would have had my fishing pole for sure ! Btw, the moray eels are there hunting for small crabs.
And whoever told you those vipers are not defensive is NOT your friend 😆🤟
I did too really wish I had a fishing rod, I think that place would be amazing for fishing!
Fantastic video guys. What a unique, incredible situation you guys were gifted. Great work taking full advantage of your opportunities
Thanks once again!
Great video David!
Glad you think so! Stay tuned for part 3 next Sunday :)
@@DAVIDSFEED I think sky needs to handle a habu
La divinité de la grotte vous à offert un cadeau, un moment unique.
Your t shirts are awesome!!!
Glad you like them! They’re available in the “shop” section of my channel.
really cool
never been there before
Thanks! Not many have
Hello David , even that you are a really good snake handler , those incredibles vipers nearly got you with there lightning striking speed and there Amazing reach , really incredible 😊
Thank you :)
so unbelievably calm he was
Would love to sed you herp ij southern india we have a lot of vipers and other snake species here
I’d absolutely love to! I’ve been thinking of doing a US trip, but unfortunately that would be extremely expensive and the videos definitely wouldn’t cover even 10% of expenses 🤣
@DAVIDSFEED Just gotta hook up with Chandler and company, and I'm certain it'll be worth it. Yes, it is expensive, but I'm sure he'll atleast have room at his place to stay at to help with cost.
@@DAVIDSFEEDHe’s referring to India 😮
The lady on the loud speaker said that Godzilla had been sighted 340 miles off shore but was headed away from the island.
Phew, thank god for that haha
Thanks!
You’re most welcome, and thank YOU so much for the support!!!
Beautiful Island.
It really is!
those hands got no chill 😂😂😂
38:40 well that is definitely the weirdest critter I’ve seen in this video 😀
LFG!
Greetings from India ❤💐
Greetings! From Thailand 🇹🇭
Wow, your correct. I have only watch the beginning so far, so I will update.
Thanks! Enjoy :)
I'll bet you the air quality is amazing there!!
It absolutely is!
amazing herping!
I’m glad you enjoyed!
I gotta say, you absolutely fascinate me. Respect. Something you might not be aware of though, if not handled perfectly, the most dangerous animal in this video is the young lady you're with. No disrespect intended. It's just true.
Haha you might be right!
Dude I felt like I was on that trip with you AWESOME JOB and sky fyi no kids are watching lol -
David which sea snake was more dangerous the blue lip or Chinese??
Thanks! To be honest I’m uncertain which one would be more toxic. It’s probably very similar, they’re both incredibly potent and potentially fatal.
Ok video is starting with some strong shutter island vibes 😂
I’m not sure I know what that is. Haha
Oh brother it’s Leonardo depcarorio movie. Promise me you’ll watch it it’s a goodun.
I really enjoyed this video, thanks David! I’m in Koh Samui in Thailand right now where I saw a baby snake today. I uploaded it to my account. Any idea what kind of snake this is?
Thanks so much! You saw a juvenile Banded Kukri Snake (Oligodon fasciolatus), a non-venomous species. They’ve got some pretty big teeth though for their small size.
I think the most important thing you proved with this expedition is that they Are actually very defensive and bitey rather than being pretty docile as was previously stated by others!
It may save others that trek there to be more cautious of them and could very well save someone's life! 😮
Hahaha yeah. Although, not many people go hiking there.
If you guys are having lunch on the beach I can't believe you didn't cook those lobsters you found that would have been the best possible lunch you guys could have ever had on the beach those things are so freaking good
Blennidae family triped fish.
Some lobster species donnot have pinchers.
What another amazing video, that was really the perfect time to subscribe !
Fantastic! Thank you so much. I wish there was a way to add this information to the video afterwards hahah
Some lobsters do have pinchers/claws. Look up Maine lobsters.
@@virgildailey1970 very small ones, so ? Like shrimps...
@@guyclairiot7491 What are you, 12 years old???
With all respect, you really should delete your comment.
There's over 30+ species with claws. People have been eating lobsters claws on Hollywood shows/movies since the beginning of film.
A simple search will help. I think you may have confused them with another crustacean.
For real your videos are 🔥 I assume if you do they’re at a friends or people watch them but do you have a collection of your own?
Thanks a lot! I used to have a huge collection, now I only have a few of my favorite animals. I’ve been trying to take a step back from hardcore keeping to focus on showing more animals in their natural habitat.
@@DAVIDSFEED another question… where are you from my dude? US?
@@jonathansellers1166Florida!
Another killer video brother!
Thanks again Aaron!
The Eel rather comes close to a moray eel, if I am not totally wrong. But for a moray eel, it probably is much to agile. EDIT: 31:55 You call it moray eel yourself ;) The black snake was mega friendly! What a big luck for you and us!
They are all moray eels, but there are dozens if not hundreds of different species.
The black one is dope!
Absolutely! Without a doubt one of my favorite snakes I’ve seen in the wild. It’s funny how the cool things always seem to be the least common.
Amazing💯
Thanks 🔥
Awesome trip!!
Thank you :)
Thanks
Wow thanks so much Heather! Your support means a lot to me :)
I laughed too loud when you said those eels were doing 69 😂
🤪
You should take a trip to Indonesia and search for green tree python in island Biak
That sounds fantastic, although I’d probably prefer to go to Papa New Guinea instead to get a better species diversity
@@DAVIDSFEED that would be assuming Papua New Guinea is famous for the birds of paradise
you are my hero
Thank you!
Sky just goes cave exploring in a mini skirt ??
Hahaha
Shame you didn't find any Elpahe Carinata Yonaguniensis. The all brown morphs look just like King Cobras!
These don’t occur in the areas I went, otherwise I’d have loved to find one!
It's as if the Black Viper was mellow for the 12 year old David...
If that was top 3 what were 1 and 2?
It’s pretty hard to say, I’ve seen quite a few cracking snakes in my time. I’d probably have to say top 1-2 would have to be a giant King Cobra I caught last year and maybe a really docile Eastern Diamondback I caught in the US.
38:50 my fav. Part 😂😂
Hahaha
I dont know if I will be able to forgive you for that misidentification. 😂
I’m quite embarrassed by that, I should’ve known better. The blue was throwing me off
@@DAVIDSFEED ha! You're actually a great taxonomist. The snake world is very diverse, and the only way to get your experience is to keep making mistakes like this. That's exactly why they call it "Earning Your Stripes"!
I was told by the snake farm in Bangkok , after the flood of 2009, that snakes were displaced all over the country making it necessary to formulate new types of anti-venom all over the country. Seems by the displacement this caused the snakes to breed with other snakes in the new areas causing a need for new types of anti-venom.
This doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense to me. While this is an issue in places like India where the same species have different venom in certain localities, in Thailand snakes of the same species can effectively be treated with the same AV regardless of where in the country it came from. Cross breeding between different species doesn’t really happen too much either.
God dang where you at snake island that place is loaded and it's freaking storming out
There are many “snake islands”. I assume you’re referring to the one in South America, which I’ve never been to. I would love to one day!
Golden lance heads that place is extremely dangerous!
Interesting that they scavenge the roadkill frogs pretty neat behavior..."o look theyre 69'ing" lmaooo
It really is, in just a couple days we saw 3 instances of one eating or trying to eat roadkill.
@@DAVIDSFEEDQuite a few snakes I’ve seen act as scavengers…
Dave I been watching you for a few years. You are one of the greatest herpers in the world I like that you bring your chick with you instead of a bunch of dudes right on, brother, but cautiousness is like no one else .stay focused playing with them death noodles. And this island is amazing I like you going through the tide pools
Thanks so much! I agree that having Skye there ads a good touch to the content. I hope to bring her along on some other trips soon!
My brain always wonders howwwwww HOW how do snakes get on islands 😂
I'm pretty sure that lobster was a Japanese Spiny lobster :3 Apparently named quite accurately 😆
That would make a lot of sense! 😂😂
