    I would like to ensure that everyone is aware that the arctic fox in my 2nd place lance had a short stubby ineffective range band and spent all of his time hopping around desperate to use his not actually enough jump jets to avoid dieing.....
    Also proceeded to be the MVP of the event for me which says alot considering it's also the only IS mech on my list.
    and to thing about >ER PPC< its my favorite weapon and the upgrade is that they do 15 dmg compared to IS 10, which is the actual important bit and why they cost an obscene amount of BV each.

    • @skyefox

      IMO the Clan ER PPC and Large Pulse are the most significant upgrades from IS, the Large Pulse range is incredible at a -1 to hit and the PPC damage is strong no matter what.

      Armour IS of limited value. Once it's gone, it's gone. There's no way to get it back. On the other hand, if you can get a high TMM, you can get that high TMM every turn. So, a force that relies on TMM for its defence will outperform a force that relies on armour in a war of attrittion. Of course, the downside with relying on TMM as your defence is that you have to stay on the move so, sometimes, you will suffer by not being in the best position to maximise your range modifiers.
      Oh, and IS pulse lasers only beat regular lasers for accuracy at less than half a dozen ranges, thanks to their reduced ranges compared to regular lasers, so the -2 to hit is not as good as it looks at first glance (for example, a MPL has better to hit numbers than a regular ML at only 1, 2 and 4 hexes range. At all other ranges, the ML is in the previous range bracket when compared to a MPL, and thus is not suffering the +2 range modifier. Not to mention, the MPL simply cannot shoot at 7-9 hexes). Of course, there's the extra damage to consider, and Clan pulse lasers blow this out of the water (but then, Clan tech is just straight up better than IS tech...)

    • @weaselwolf
      @weaselwolf Год назад +5

      Not inner sphere pulse lasers. Inner sphere pulse lasers are garbage. Clan pulse? Sure. Clan LPL is probably the best weapon in the game. IS MPL? Trash.
      You only get -2 if you're within 2 hexes. Sh after that they have the same accuracy as a standard medium due to the increased take bracket, and then they're useless after 6 hexes while the standard medium is not.
      Throw in the fact that they're double the tonnage AND more heat and you have one of the most worthless weapons in the entire inner sphere arsenal.

    • @BCWasbrough
      @BCWasbrough Год назад +2

      In my last play group, one of the guys dropped a 400 engine into an 80 ton mech with MASC. Gave it a targeting computer, a clan LPL, and filled the rest of the tonnage with heat sinks and clan MPLs. It did great at keeping in brawling range, and would shred whatever you aimed it at in a turn or two.

    I took part in this tournament too and ended somewhere in the middle of the pack 18th out of 38 iirc.
    I made a mixed medium/light lance where 2 hunchbacks were acting as Battleline/bodyguard mechs, 2 Blackjack-omnis as rangers and 2 lights (Tarantula + Venom) as flankers/antilight/objective runners. I think it could have ranked higher since 1 of the matches I royally messed up. But my list kind of followed the same design as the winning lists except my 4 mediums acted as the 2 assaults the top lists and my lights acted as the scout cavalry of the 2nd and 3rd place lists.
    I learned a lot during this tournament, way more than just solo playing against Princess and it was tons of fun!

    I'm just a collector and theory crafter at this point, but I think these are all good points to consider. I tend to start building a lance with a big tanky boy to anchor the battle line and then consider what mechs might synergize. But even with my more weapons focused mechs, I lean towards the more bulky mechs. In the succession wars, the Orion is my favorite mech because it looks cool, but also it's really tanky and can utilize it's weapons/heat well at all ranges. The Stalker is my second favorite mech because despite being armed to the teeth, it has really solid armor for the BV. I like pairing them together and then basing my last two on what I need for that particular engagement. If I need to be fast, I can go with a Phoenix Hawk and Wolfhound to zip around. If I can afford to play defensive, I can drop in a Vindicator or something fun like a Hunchback and a Centurion to play bodyguards.
    It's hard in the Succession Wars era, but I try to put a minimum of 4 Piercing weapons in each 5k BV lances.

      Lights are always a problem unless you have an obvious statement that they will get ONE, and just ONE, salvo before being obliterated. That may buy you lost turns, effectively removing one or two enemy mechs from the game "waiting for an opening" which may never come... or charge into a glorious fireball chancing a lucky roll.
      In any case, as always, a competitive scene proves the motto of professional gamblers: they hate chance (so the more stable and predictable you can make the situation, the better)

    For the second place team the pulse laser is very much the theme for the entire fighting force, the heavy machines mount 6 of the large versions between them. As well as targeting gear. It allows them to negate their own motions and keep their defensive modifiers up more readily as well. Clan pulse lasers still reach quite a distance, in the case of the large it's double the reach of it's IS counterpart making it more a comparative to the IS PPC than to lasers. at least play wise.
    For the ER PPCs on the Warhawk, all ER PPCs from both factions have no minimum range, it's what makes the upgrade to say the Wyvren make so much sense, it allows it to use the gun in close city brawls, and also compensates for it's low speed by giving reach at the far end.

    we still all have a few mechs running them, sometimes because it's just a feature of a mech model, sometimes on assaults that are expected to get into cqc or as mG replacemnets for anti infantry without ammo risks.

The reason you only saw the one UAC 20 in these three lists is because it can do something no other weapon can: 40 damage at once. That makes it worth fielding in a specialty role, but only for the clans.

    My LB got Left Torsoed and Destroyed due to XL Engines in round 3 after running in.
    My Cerb got 35 damaged in one shot (2 ppc + gauss) to the CT, dying 1 round later.
    Meh.. sucks to shoot All of the enemy armor before taking 1 mech out while your 1 million Tons of armor get near instant killed by Lucky 1 torso Hits / XL engines
    And to Lose initiative rolls while being 1 mech down (look above at LB) .. like 4 turns in a row.
    But : i think the composition is great! Need to play that more often, even tho i fear the XLs in the LB and Cerb.

    Sounds a lot different than the game I played when we were young (3025 era battletech, 3rd succession war). Most of our battles were simply slug-fests, it was difficult to do sufficient damage at range so it often came down to brawling or melee. Physical attacks were common, from the light or medium mechs charge attacks to the heavies and assaults punching other heavies or assaults and hoping for that lucky head hit.

For some reason I've just never heard, or even thought about there being tournaments before. MWO, Living Legends, Battletech video game all made me realize that people can still get into the MechWarrior/BattleTech series. Then when MechWarrior 5 came out, it shocked me that a I was able to play with a full squad regularly for a while, and I wasn't even trying to advertise and be like "hey play this game with me". People were just interested in it. So I've been trying to look into the tabletop that the games were based on. Though I dunno how many changes the new catalyst games version has made if it made any. While on paper mpl are optimal... Only if u are allowing the opponent to close with you.
    A high skill LRM boat can create maximum range standoff damage that can easily front load the damage mpl's would do in close without the light hunting aspect of it.
    But lpl are much better at putting down a ligh mech then the alternative; but a melee medium is even better. Both.. both is good.
    With lrm's at the center of your list you can drop speed in favor of armor and weaponry. Gunning down your opponent and sticking around once they close. Speed is of limited use on the minimum mapsheets most battletech tournament games are played on (and ironically speed leads to slower games) and so has to come in to close the game.

    Obviously, this tournament might not have implemented the 'no Uniques' rule I typically saw, but it does send up red flags.

      goal was not so much to be lore accurate, but to be competetive as well as in a more beginner friendly sandbox and push tactics. there were some lore friendly lists, but the higher finishing players all recognized that restricting further was suboptimal for this style. I took part in the event, but MRC is really more of a "pick-up game" format with competitive events. The players usually have other groups we play with for campaigns, lore friendly groups or using advanced rules like quirks or custom mechs. When someone does role up with a lore friendly list, and especially when they win with it, it definately gets nods of approval and raising of beer glasses. It's just not the focus. ~pirate
