Thank you very much, This is my work so it is always a bit of a compromise/juggle between time & quality, I have to get a job done within a reasonable time but i try not to let that get in the way of doing a job i can be happy with,
@@Gidjoiner Yes, that all makes complete sense. I'm a retired engineer and machine builder so I very much appreciate a fellow artisan. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Stan 👍 I did metalwork & Tech drawing at school but couldn't get an engineering job, although in my mind i want to work to a high precision I've learnt that you can't do that with wood, there's got to be a more 'organic' approach to the engineering involved, & perfection comes at a cost sometimes, i've seen people come on site, spend hrs trying to do a perfect job but even after all the time spent their work is sub par, they don't last long, there's a balance, good joiners get the job done in a quick time but also to a, maybe not perfect, but good standard.
Great video Gid. For sure you could have bought a new keep, but it is so much more satisfying when you can make one yourself! Great end result, looks very nice on your gate. Kind regards, The R-Tech Team.
Thanks, yep 👍 I like this machine, now I've got a decent welder it'll be practice practice practice but i'm getting better, I was using it the other day to enlarge a gate but the way I've got it sat in my shed doorway where i can leave it set up & working just outside the door on a 6ft gate the 3m length of hose was awkward welding around round bar so I'll be in touch to get a longer one 😉👍
Thanks David 👍 Yeah very happy with the welder, I've had a little flux core that's got me through a few yrs of Mots & over the yrs I've used other peoples Mig welders but never had a decent one of my, now i can spend a little time with it, learn & refine 😉 Joinery with metal 😁
Me you and the average tradesman would panic, oh no there's no keep with the lock but our GID "hold my roll up I'll bloody make one" 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 is there nothing this man can't do
😂😂 Thanks 👍The clients have no idea the time spent on it but It was good practice welding & a very satisfying thing to do, to me the final look was well worth the effort 😉👍
I bet you find that Inverter welder a lot smoother. I've had welders in the workshop for a long time. Apart from fixing up old Land Rovers and welding cars, the amount of one off tools you can make are legion. You'l be making Iron gates soon lol!
Thanks, Yeah i have a little 100amp flux core machine with a crappy hose, It's got me through a few MOT's surprisingly well but not easy to dial in for small parts like this & leaves a messy finish, flux slag, body work is flat-ish so that's easier to clean off but a pain wire wheeling between welds, I've repaired a couple of gates for people but at 100amp it's a bit under powered,.. I've used other peoples machines over the yrs but finally have my own decent machine so now i can practice & put my mind to it to get better, My back yard is filling up with iron gates that I've acquired for the day when i get a decent welder 😉😀 don't think I'll be making them but the odd repair is now going to be easier, Love new toys 😀
🤣 I get that 👍 I'll decide to build something a certain way just to buy 'that router cutter' 😉 The welder fixes things esp my van, I'm screwed without wheels,. + i like the new learning experience, the flux core thing i have didn't give me that intrigue
😂 I've already got a £71 Sealey auto darkening helmet that works fine but just bought an Auto True Colour helmet for £100, yeah toys get more expensive Thanks 👍
the only issue with this welder is you cant see what amps your settings are at until you actually start welding . this seems stupid to me . i like to know what my settings are before i start
Couple of tips although you may know. While the grinder and chisel are out, cut the mushrooms off the top of the bolster chisel. They tend to snap and fly off when hammered and you'll know it if it hits you in the eye! Get yourself a leather welders apron. They dont go up in flames like a waxed barbour! If you're outside and there is a wind and the welder wont behave, its due to the wind blowing the gas away. 👍nice bit of fab!
Thanks yeah that's an old advise that gets neglected, you can see in the vid that bits have already come off 🤕 I'll been shopping for a while to get an apron or coat but always have to spend money elsewhere n this coat is 30yrs old, washed a few times n not a lot of wax on it, It wasn't too windy that's why i put that comment near the beginning, it's this phone that picks up the slightest breeze/breath 😕 I have no choice tho until i modify my shed, i also nearly made a note that i should leave the nozzle in place when at the end of a weld to let the over run on the gas to do it's thing, Thanks anyway 👍😉
Nice mate. I don't think it's too much effort. I'd do that. What welder is it mate? Also, do you have a workshop where you live (on your land) or do you have to travel to your workshop? I'm looking for a bigger workshop space but it's so hard to find anything
www.r-techwelding.co.uk/mig-welder-r-tech-i-mig180/ + Hobbyweld 5º Argon/CO² gas mix, £65 bottle rental £42 for the gas, £2.50 delivery, then £42 for a refill. I have sheds with extensions next to my house 😉
As you've discovered, running a slitting disk first helps bending. When you get 'the eye', you can slit on the inside and bend to close the slit, no need to weld as you don't see it on the inside and that sort of stuff isn’t structural. Have a look through Alans welding vids, he is a master at cutting / bending / slitting stuff. He makes bbq's and smokers in the deep south of the good old that there 'Murica. You probably know this already but don't grind hot metal, the heat can cause the disks to shatter and if you've ever been next to one when it does, you won't do it a second time. I think R tech are based in Clifton, York, from memory, handy if you need a repair down the line.
Thanks 👍 I've got a sub on Alans channel 👍 (Allen's welding/woodworking if that's the one you mean) I didn't grind on the hot metal, the video timeline can be misleading but not for reasons you said, i used a sanding disk & thought it wouldn't be good for it but exploding discs I'll keep in mind. the bending bit we'll see next time i do it, They may have been but the contact on their website says Gloucester, delivery was next day for the welder so i hope any other services will be prompt, they seemed friendly enough when i spoke with them
Yes, that's Alen. Som of his older vids are useful. I was thinking of TecArc in York. They make some decent kit, mig, tig, plasma etc that is repairable, lasts and carry parts for years plus are local, handy if you need any more kit. I have a Hypertherm plasma, supposedly the best, but dreading it breaking down, it'll be £100's. If you can afford it, buy a couple of grinders (makita do reasonable ones circa £50) and put two different grades of flap disk on them. Saves loads of time changing disks. I'm out and about to get some U Chanel this morning as have put the relocated soil pipe where the gate hinges on parents extension over the weekend so need to re hang it 5” further over and want the 'post' to be where the pipe is, so going to slip it around the pipe on 3 sides and resin bolt to the wall. Won't be cheap 😓 Great vids Gid, keep them coming.
Just a quick un' Gid, you will find it easier to get a sharp bend if you cut about half way through the steel with a cutting disc, bend it and re- weld it. All the best.
Hi, I did consider that, i was thinking of scribing it but that wouldn't have cut deep enough & the weather was looking bleak so in the end i whacked it with a hammer, Next time I'll remember that 😉 i should then have a little workshop to do these things in, setting everything up n looking out for the weather makes me rush, I'd have prob cut too deep n bodged the weld, I've done a fair bit over the yrs with other peoples welders but only had a flux core machine of my own, now I've got a decent welder I can spend time with it but I'm still a novice & learning on this machine Thanks Morgan, you too 👍
Would you put the cut on the inside of the bend or outside & weld it? outside would be easier to weld but putting the cut inside would give a smooth corner/edge on the outside
Just tried it cutting on the inside, i had to give the cut a sort of 45º groove but it bent very nicely, I haven't got the welder set up to see how my inside corner weld would turn out 🤪 I'll have another go when the welder's out Thanks, next time 👍
Sarcasm i presume, You've obviously missed the point , This was just playing with my new welder & the satisfaction of making something , the gates were a cheap crap job,

Excellent job, your attention to detail is commendable.

That's one bit of nice work seeing it on the door you'd never know it didn't come with the lock. Keep up the good work
Thanks, will do 👍 For a novice welder i think it came out looking ok, like you say you'd never know 👍
Nicely done. Makes no financial sense but the pleasure of just doing it was doubtless worth it. I enjoyed every minute.
Thanks Greg 👍 Yep just playing with my toys & it matched well in the end, Imagine making the whole lock for £3.99 😂
Thats a fantastic job Gid looks brilliant
Thanks Michael 👍 Yeah looked a bit like it was meant to be 😊
You're a very inspiring man Gid 👏👏

I'd prefer a jacket, as it's outside I'd be wearing a coat esp this time of yr & a lot of my welding has been done under the van
Or maybe both & some gloves that aren't like boxing gloves, every pair I've had don't fall apart 🤣

@@Gidjoiner On the outside is easier because you are stretching the metal in effect rather than trying to compress it if you cut on the inside.
