- In this video I will show you how I change the oil on my 2017 Cub Cadet riding lawn mower. It has a Kohler 22hp 7000 series engine with smart choke.

A little tip for the oil filter is to steal some of the wife's aluminum foil from the kitchen and create a catch pan/drain pan. You can pin the "pan" down with some magnets if you're changing the oil outdoors. Works great and makes final cleanup a breeze!

You're welcome! I personally change my oil in the garage so my foil "pan" isn't blown around by any potential wind. I crumple it up underneath the filter and create walls on three sides then let it drape down to direct the oil into my drain pan. Works great and keeps the oil off of the frame

Nice video. For any oil change project I always have a large (approx 3 foot x 3 foot or larger piece of cardboard (even under the wheels) to catch any spills or drips to avoid having to clean concrete or asphalt afterward. Also helps when checking for leaks.

I use a Solo cup when taking filter on and off. Just be sure not to cross thread when putting new filter on. The cup catches the oil.

You can poke a hole in the lower edge on the bottom of the filter and drain the filter first.

Amazon sells a device they call "form-a-funnel", it's flexible and it molds itself to just about any surface, including the frame of your tractor. You can divert the oil right into your drain pan.

See, mine doesn’t have that drain hose yours does. Mine has a clear tube you have to put on after taking out the plug…. After the oil is pissing all over
That's weird and very unfortunate. I wonder if you can contact them and get a hose adapter? Maybe mine is a little new design?
You can stuff pig mats or one of those flexible oil draining tool to prevent oil getting to the frame.

@tgltoday2717 mine is this years model. I'm not sure if yours is different, but the yellow plastic on clean oil is kind of hard to read. and the single o-ring is for sure going to be an issue as I only have a carport to keep it under. To be fair on our honda civic with its plastic dipstick nearly the same color as clear oil I also hate. Maybe it's just me.
Yeah, sounds like our dipsticks are the same. This yellow one has one o-ring on it and I've not had any issues with any dust getting in there which I'm in sand all the time unfortunately. I go through mower blades like crazy. But I do see what you mean about clean oil on the yellow. I can still read it but I get where you're coming from.
The best way to remove the oil filter is put a piece of cardboard wedge it at a slight under the oil filter. Try it this is the way I have changed my filter on my 7000 series KT735 24 HP twin cylinder. The best oil filter I have found is the Napa Gold 7035 filter it is shorter so it won't interfere with steering arm, also better control taking off and putting on. I have never put oil in my filter before install, short filter fills fast on start up. Please don't take all as gospel but being a mechanic for 35 years I would fill an oil filter on a fresh rebuild only. I hope this helps a little! Thanks
Thanks for all the tips. I actually used cardboard this last time around as someone else had mentioned that and it worked great. I've heard Napa Gold are some of the best oil filters you can get, for some reason I was thinking they only made them for vehicles though lol good to know for this coming spring. Thanks for letting me know on the oil filter. I've done it both ways on other machines and never had any issues. I really wasn't sure but you have convinced me I don't need to which I prefer so thank you again.
@@tgltoday2717 The Napa filter is for cars but it works great on the mower too. Much cheaper than the little Kohler filters. There are several auto oil filters that work on Kohler, Briggs, Kawas/ ruclips.net/video/BjRAcrA4rEs/видео.html
@@Greg-wn2pp for some reason napa and O'Riley's everytime I try to get a filter for my mower from them they sell it for $11 which is what the Kohler one cost me so I just stick with the Kohler. Good to know, I've never tried to get a Kawasaki engine filter from them.
